Thanks to JB for this great picture of 19 matchbooks, featuring old businesses from around Claycord.
QUESTION: How many of these businesses do you remember?

Nice !
Remember them all; been to 6
Back in the day just about all the stores and restaurants had complimentary match books and also had cigarette machines.
Use to enjoy the pizza and family friendly
atmosphere at Straw Hat in Pleasant Hill
and Shakey’s in Pacheco. There are still
quite a few Straw Hat’s in the Bay Area.
There is a Shakey’s in Oroville and more
in Southern California.
My first taste of pizza and blue cheese was when the Straw Hat Pizza opened in Lafayette. It was fabulous! It instantly became one of my mom’s favorite ways to have a break after work not make dinner the rest of the 1960s. What a nice memory.😊
Took my date for the Junior Prom in 1978 to the Velvet Turtle in Menlo Park. One and only time I ate there.
I remember all of them except Diablo Power Tool Co. in WC. Been to 9.
,,, same here +1
I didn’t live in Concord until 2008, then I left for a few years, but came back in 2014. However, I have been visiting here since the eighties. I have been to the Velvet Turtle on the Peninsula, since I lived there for a long time, also remember Stanfords and Peppermill, I been to Stanfords, not sure about the Peppermill.
I have a collection of matchbooks, mostly from the City. Cadillac Bar and Grill, Perry’s, Lily’s, Royal Exchange, Silhouettes, Fog City Diner, Murphy’s. Savoy Tivoli, probably a few others don’t remember right now.
Use to hang out at the Peppermill back in the day. The bar was great with a fireplace that you could sit around. The Barmaids all wore beautiful outfits and did a great job getting you drinks. The restaurant had great food and the Maserati Omelet was my favorite late night meal.
Used to love going to World’s Fare at Sunvalley, THAT was a food court.
Ah, the bar maids at Peppermill.
Loved the Peppermill, good for your eyes if you know what I mean.
I was told back then that the peppermill is where the casino by the same name in Reno trained their waitresses. That might explain it. That also gave me the impression that cino owned the restaurant as he has a big share of the peppermill casino in Reno
Yep!!!
I had forgotten about the Velvet Turtle.
I miss Straw Hat. They do *not* have many locations left and continue to shrink every year. I went to the one in Brentwood, and it’s a good hour from Concord. Seriously not worth the drive. They had good pizza and some items you couldn’t find anywhere else. Kind of wish we had one locally. They used to be all over the place.
Peppermill was nice back in the day. There’s still one left in Reno. The one here just quietly died. I remember when it was falling out of favor– you could eat there, and there was practically no one there. Remember how it was always dark? Towards the end they were keeping the shades up and letting the light in. It just wasn’t the same.
Seemed like Marie Calendars suffered the same fate. It just fell out of favor.
Carlos Murphys certainly brings back memories. They had the biggest menu I can ever recall at a restaurant. I just remember it being pages and pages.
Kind of surprised Mr Steak didn’t make the cut here.
A good friend of mine married one of those Peppermill waitresses in those slinky dresses with the high slit. Turned out it was a mistake.
