The death of a 42-year-old inmate at the West County Detention Center in Richmond was being investigated by the Contra Costa Count Sheriff’s Office and the county District Attorney’s Office.

At about 6:15 p.m. Saturday, a Sheriff’s deputy was escorting a mental health clinician to speak with an inmate at the jail, and when the deputy opened the door to the inmate’s cell, she found the inmate unresponsive, with a bed sheet wrapped around his neck, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s office.

The inmate, identified as Gregory Lynds of Antioch, was later pronounced dead at the scene. The death is believed to be a suicide.

Lynds was originally arrested by the Antioch Police Department and was booked into jail on Oct. 2. He was being held on suspicion of two felony counts of elder abuse (likely to produce great bodily harm or death),
suspicion of two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon, parole violation and battery on a peace officer, Sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

Suicide is no laughing matter, however, this guy sounds like he was a piece of excrement so I’ll shed no tears on his behalf.

Or, he may be having some serious mental problems. Hence, why a mental health clinician was being escorted to see him. The longer we continue to ignore mental health issues the more problems we will see in homelessness, mass shootings, and violent acts.

Thanks Gregory, you just saved us some money.

Oh boo hoo.

Very sad . Unfortunate to see such cruel comments. The people in jail are paying the price for the crimes they commit. We all make mistakes and poor choices , some just to a more extreme extent. We shouldn’t celebrate when someone commits suicide . I hope it was quick and painless.

It drives me nuts when bleeding heart Liberals call a crime a “mistake”.

It isn’t a “mistake” when someone decides to do something morally wrong or illegal… it is a conscious decision to do it!

There is a big difference between making a mistake & committing a crime.

👍🏼

Couldn’t agree more. Mistakes are what happen when you are a kid and you are working things out. Mistakes are NOT driving drunk and killing someone, theft, drug addiction, murder, etc.

With his record – especially two felony counts of elder abuse and battery on a peace officer, I have no empathy for this criminal. He saved the taxpayers money. His crimes were crimes, not “mistakes.”

Hopefully the elderly person is OK and being well looked after.

In addition, the word :”mistake” minimizes the victim or victims of the crime; who, by in large, are completely forgotten by society. Ultimately, victims are the ones who suffer the long term effects of a criminal’s “mistake.”
