A man who died after his pickup truck veered off of state Highway 4 and onto a frontage road before bursting into flames in Martinez early Sunday morning has been identified by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office as 24-year-old El Sobrante resident Quanah Souza.
California Highway Patrol officers responded at 3:04 a.m. to a crash reported on westbound Highway 4 just east of the Pine Street/Center Avenue interchange.
Investigators determined Souza was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado that went off the north side of the highway, traveled through a fence and came to rest on its wheels on the frontage road, Arnold Drive, then burst into flames, according to the CHP.
Souza was pronounced dead at the scene.
Anyone with information about the crash or the events leading up to it is asked to call the CHP’s Contra Costa-area office at 925-646-4980.
