Click on the image shown above to view the 2020 – 2021 school reopening plan from the Contra Costa County Office of Education.
This is the plan for all districts when schools reopen for in-person instruction:
A few of the highlights include….
- Students in grades 3-12 are required to wear face coverings at school.
- Students in preschool to 2nd grade are strongly encouraged to wear a cloth face covering, particularly when indoors.
- Space student desks four (4) to six (6) feet apart or more to promote physical distancing where practicable.
- Physical barriers should be used when physical distancing is not possible.
- Minimize the movement of students and teachers or staff as much as practicable. Students should remain in the same space and in groups as small and consistent as practicable.
Schools can reopen for in-person instruction once Contra Costa County has been in the Substantial (red) tier for at least two weeks. Contra Costa County is currently in the Widespread (purple) tier, which means only elementary schools can reopen with an approved waiver. About 20 private elementary schools are currently open in the county.
It is currently up to each school district to decide when to reopen schools for in-person instruction once the county moves into the red tier.
Currently, Contra Costa County has seen a total of 15,640 cases of COVID-19. There are currently 859 active cases of COVID-19 in Contra Costa County.
The county’s population is about 1.1-million.

The left is actually arguing against “patriotic education” and they control the teachers unions. That tells you everything you need to know.
Not sure how they think free people will ever wear the mask. A mask is the symbol of your submission. Is that what you want for your children? Who wants Americans to submit?
You must not have kids….
How could anyone be against “patriotic education”? It sounds so patriotic because of its name. The curriculum does not exist yet so no one knows what it will contain. But it has a nice name. Trump’s move is largely political — a reaction to a growing push by some academics for schools to teach an American history that better acknowledges slavery and systemic racism. Why would Trump be against that?
One passenger on a boat decided to dig a hole in his floor and water started coming in. All of the other passengers got mad at him. He argued it was HIS cabin and he was free to do what he wants. We are all in the same boat. Listen to the doctors and wear a mask. .
And Governor Newsom started drilling holes to let the water out……
My doctor said masks don’t do anything. We are most definitely not in the same boat. We are not in this together. I couldn’t care less about you. You can take your little cute story and shove it. If you want to keep pushing fake medical information, you may be my enemy.
About time! I find this relatively encouraging, though it is slow. When it says schools can open when we’ve been in the red level for two weeks, does that add two weeks on top of the built-in two weeks – you aren’t officially in the next level until you have achieved its numerical thresholds for two weeks.
I was glad to see them quote the American academy of pediatrics’ statement on how important it is for kids to get access to in-person school again, and noting the evidence that children are not as likely to spread Covid as adults.
Oh, you misunderstand. It says they CAN open, not that they will. MDUSD will NOT be reopening at any point this school year. The unions will never allow it.
Prediction:
This “open?” conversation will segway into weather immunizations can be given to all students in order to lower the transmission of the virus. That cannot be accomplished until at least the middle of next year. Therefore, this school year will not reopen in January.
They’re just dragging it out so the teachers get full pay and families don’t just up and leave the state.
My 3rd grade granddaughter is folding paper airplanes for her class work. Real learning!
Good point. But I’m still glad that CC health acknowledged some reality. Schools really should be opened as soon as possible, and it is doable. Whether a district actually does it … you may be right.
Agreed @Oh, please. Here in Mtz there are no plans to reopen. Very discouraging. They keep us “hoping” so we don’t leave but the teacher’s are loving their new way of life. One school in the area tweeted a dance off from a teacher during the school day. It made me sick. He was in his PJ’s acting like a fool while our kid’s are struggling with distant learning and lack of socialization. All I could think of was how our tax payers were paying for this tool to act like a donkeys you know what…
Between the unions agreeing and artificially inflated numbers, kids aren’t going back soon. That’s the unfortunate truth.
Wondering how much taxpayer dollars went into this worthless document?
If my Great Grandson were old enough for school I’d strongly suggest he be home schooled.
Same👍🏼
You’ve obviously never homeschooled any children …….
Actual homeschooling is a lot better than Zoom schooling for young kids. You can do it on your schedule, without all the screen time, and the kid can go at the pace that works for them. If you have to supervise them anyway it is much preferable to have more control and flexibility. And yes, my kids are homeschooled, but have also had some classes online this past year.
This is ALWAYS an option! Why don’t people that want their kids to stay home just opt for home schooling instead of trying to force everyone to stay home because they want to? Its not like the 20 minutes a day of Zoom chat actually does anything when we’re “distance learning”..
Many home schooled kids graduate a year or more ahead of their peers in public schools. There is a lot of collaboration among home school parents that speeds up the process as well as socialization.
This might be slightly less true in today’s crowded societies because people are now less social than in the past.
Suddenly it’s 4-6 feet, not 6 feet. If you still believe this hoax I’m sorry that you live in fear.
My favorite is that they say they are following the “science” when it was admitted that the 6 feet rule was made up. Lol. Doesn’t get any better than this to watch the mindless sheep do what they are told.
That’s so irresponsible. “We know this is damaging kids but we can’t or won’t get our act together and take the modest steps to make it safe, so … sorry, kids! You can just suffer psychologically and developmentally until some future time, unspecified, when the admin and the unions decide it benefits them to come back. It’s just impossible to get creative, open the freaking windows, buy some portable air purifiers, and spread kids out a bit. Impossible. We can fund infinite pensions with imaginary money and make Sacramento now to our will,, but we can’t handle the logistics of modest Covid prevention. Not in our power, kids!”
@ Led… very well said!
Face masks are little more than sneeze guards for your face. They don’t stop the virus… you can breathe it in right through the fibers of the mask…. but if you don’t mind wearing one, by all means do.
I wonder how many years it will take to link an increase in crime, homeless, mental illness; by those who are children today, to the school shut downs.
The LA county health officer was very clear: if Biden wins, the schools and businesses will be back open with in 2 weeks of the election if not sooner.
If trump wins the aim is to keep schools closed until June 2021 and businesses as long as they can.
Sending kids back to school is a killer idea.
Ignorance and politics is making this pandemic worse in the US. Even Trump, in private, admitted the coronavisus is deadly and airborne. Masks will slow it down. Masks can not hurt you so why not wear them.
It’s airborne. No one is thankful for the disease they didn’t get. I hope it doesn’t take a major outbreak to change people’s minds about mitigation.
I’m waiting to hear how the local private schools that are in session are faring re: Covid. I do realize that those students come from families that are education and success oriented. Their kids speak and read English and don’t live 3 families to a house.
How about DVC???
You’d probably have to ask them…. I don’t think this guide applies.
DVC is a part of the Contra Costa Community College District which has oversight by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office up in Sacramento.
