Contra Costa Elections Building Named After Longtime Clerk-Recorder

Contra Costa County’s Clerk-Recorder Elections building this week was formally named “The Stephen L. Weir Clerk-Recorder Building” after a retired longtime county clerk-recorder and registrar of voters.

The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 Tuesday to name the Escobar Street building after Weir, who was the county’s clerk-recorder from 1989 until his retirement in 2013.

“He did it all with a sense of humor, and with great integrity,” said Supervisor John Gioia, who noted Weir opened up the office to same-sex marriages, and helped make that process more welcoming. “You helped bring that office into the 21st century.”

Added Supervisor Karen Mitchoff, “I can’t think of any better way to honor your work and your legacy.”

Weir served on the Concord City Council from 1980 until 1989, had served as a board member with the Contra Costa Water District and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and as a field office staff member
with former Assemblyman and state Sen. Daniel Boatwright.

Weir spoke briefly too on Tuesday, urging election officials and U.S. Postal Service workers in California and beyond to do their jobs to make sure the November general election goes off as smoothly, and as inclusively, as possible.

Weir’s a good guy.

He did a fine job, and I’m glad he is receiving this recognition!

First, glad to see his first named spelled liked my beloved deceased husband, Stephen P. Beltrano, who served as a Peace Office for the City and County of San Francisco as a Peace Officer in the late 70’s, early 1980’s. Bless County Clerk Stephen L. Weir. Only been in Contra County living 16 years, my husband from San Francisco, but all our friends and my friends still are Firefireights/Retired/Police from City and County SF including Michael Biel of SF, who my husband was friends with from age nine. Have known Mike and Toni for over 40 years.

I’m so sick of Politicians or Cleark reporters or Superintendents getting buildings, parks, schools, and trails named after them. I think those places should be named after children who died in the community.

Weir is a just and honorable man with superb character traits.

I hope he’s not remembered as the last honest Clerk Recorder.

I am delighted the building was named after him, a just honor.

Unbelievable! Rings a little like Concord City Council’s plaque in Todos Santos Plaza. For getting and keeping a well-paying government office job with lucrative benefits for nine years? Certainly, there are members of law enforcement, police and fire killed in the line of duty, or fallen war heros who served their country from this area who need to be honored in this way. Just another way in which those who get and keep these jobs (like the Supervisors who voted on this) are breaking their arms patting themselves on the back. Amazing!

Correction. He served in that capacity for, what, 24 years, and will now collect a very lucrative retirement at taxpayer expense the rest of his life? That should be enough. Some of those taxpayers won’t retire as comfortably as he does. Why aren’t they naming buildings after them?

Stephen Weir was my favorite Clerk-Recorder. He took the time to meet with me listen to my concerns and took action. He continued to follow up after our meeting and made major changes for the better. Glad to see he is being recognized.

Steve Weir is an honorable man who is very deserving of all of the positive recognition that he receives. Having said that I am a little surprised that in this time of being “politically correct” that buildings and statues are being erected and named after individuals.
I would also add to commentators like Gittyup that are envious of people with decent pensions that they should have gotten in the other line on career day.

@AlmostFamous Right! I applied for a job at the County right out of high school. They didn’t want me! Went to college, instead. Worked jobs I could get until I was sidelined well before retirement by a debilitating case of Fibromyalgia. Stupid me. I should have run for office.

So now we know why your posts always reflect your foul mood.

Some of us find the prospect of a career nursing at the public teat off-putting. Make no mistake – government has no shot at hiring the best and brightest.
