A 26-year-old Pacheco man was charged Thursday in the death of a woman whose body was discovered early Saturday just north of the Buchanan Field Airport in unincorporated Contra Costa County.

The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office has charged Anthony Johnathan Buscemi with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and with driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage causing injury in the death of 35-year-old Shelly Stevens of Lafayette.

Buscemi surrendered to detectives on Tuesday, Contra Costa County Sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said in a news release. He remained in custody Thursday afternoon at the Martinez Detention Facility in lieu of $300,000 bail.

At about 1:14 a.m. Sept. 5, Sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers were called to the 5000 block of Marsh Drive, between state Highway 4 and the north end of Buchanan Field, where a woman’s body was
found, having been struck by a vehicle, Lee said. Soon thereafter, a deputy found what turned out to be the suspect vehicle nearby.

Life in a split second. Back in the early 80’s, a drunk driver crossed over the median at Taylor and Grayson and hit a friend head-on. This friend was a passenger, training her 15 year old daughter, who had just received her permit, to drive. The daughter died instantly and my friend was horribly injured. This DUI driver had eight priors, and had attended a half dozen “DUI classes,” in order to reinstate his driving privilege. He was the first person ever sentenced to prison in Contra Costa County for felony DUI. There is a precedent. Let’s see how this case ends. RIP Shelly Stevens.

Such a terrible loss. If a driver is under the influence of alcohol or any other substance that alters the ability to operate a vehicle, there is no sympathy/compassion from me. No excuse. Don’t get behind the wheel of a car and drive. Very simple. Get a designated driver, taxi, Uber, friend, anything but putting yourself and others at risk.

I’m pretty sure there was a comment from an acquaintance/friend that stated they suspected it was the boyfriend in one of the earlier posts on this…

This is so sad yet continues to happen. This is where a lot of the politicians should focus their attention not all the frivolous BS they seem to be drawn to these days.

I know there are specific details in the way various homicides laws are written. But… I still feel this type of homicide should be re-classified as murder.

So glad they found the killer. The poor woman. Strange, did he run her over at the drive-in after drinking? It sounds like she was not in her car when the accident occurred at 1:00 am

Oh, please September 11, 2020 - 8:31 PM - 8:31 PM

Drunk driving needs to be a 1 strike and you are out situation. There is NO excuse. This is not a mistake and no one should get a 2nd chance from this decision.

I want to take away the pain from the Family and Friends of this young woman, but I feel powerless. The only way I know how to comfort the Family and Friends is to be there for them and hope that the little or small comfort can be like the pillow we lay down our heads on, when we go to sleep at night. Be there for your Family and Friends always…you have the power to just be. Love and Hold them Dearly. You have that power every day. Peace and Love.
