Health officials in Contra Costa and Santa Clara counties on Thursday warned residents to avoid social gatherings during the upcoming Labor Day weekend to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Contact tracers in Contra Costa County found many coronavirus cases linked to parties and picnics that occurred during the Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekends earlier this year.
That included people who were asymptomatic and unaware they had the virus, later tested positive for the virus and infected family and friends at a gathering during those two weekends.
“Humans are social beings and COVID-19 has interfered with our natural desire to see and hug the people we care about,” Contra Costa County Health Officer Dr. Chris Farnitano said. “At the same time, we’re in an unprecedented situation now and we can’t behave like it’s business as usual.”
Dr. Sara Cody, Santa Clara County’s health officer and the director of the county’s Public Health Department, suggested residents who do plan to hold gatherings during the holiday weekend do so outside, where the risk of transmitting the virus is lessened.
People should also do what they can to avoid congregating with people who live in other households, Cody and Farnitano said.
In addition to preventing the virus’ spread, Bay Area residents are advised to take the expected weekend heat wave into account, as temperatures are likely to rise into the triple digits.
Some sections of the greater Bay Area like Santa Cruz and Monterey counties elected to close their beaches to the public during the weekend to proactively prevent large groups.
“We must all do our part to avoid getting sick or infecting others,” Cody said.

There are a lot of people that agree with you. They just don’t all post. My sister is currently “recovering” from Covid in Alameda County. She was diagnosed 2 weeks ago. She spent 8 days in bed unable to get up. Her children cared for her and family sent food over, because no one could safely come over. She even called for an ambulance once, but the EMT talked her into staying home. There isn’t much they can do at the hospital unless you are actually dying, they said. After 8 days, she was able to get up and take a shower and then went back to bed. Yes, she’s alive. Yes, she will get better. But, to say this virus is “just a cold” or “just like the flu” is ridiculous. She is 45 years old, and it knocked her out for 8 days! Her body ached so bad she thought she was dying. Nothing relieved the pain. She’s now considered “recovered” but it will be a long time until she can function normally. These people that aren’t worried about getting Covid, do they realize they could take 2-3 months to recover? That they may never recover fully? Just wear the mask and try to stay away from people. If enough people could do that, we could wait this virus out until there is a reliable treatment, until there are quick and reliable tests, until we stand a chance to stop people from dying. Why is the urge to rebel so strong?

Thank you for your time posting this sobering news about your sister. Yes it is so important to be aware of the mandates and not to get caught up with weird things people come up with to avoid being compliant. People resent being told what to do. They love to find excuses to hate also as you can see on these threads. So indicative of our broken society here in the USA these days.
So glad your sister has begun her recovery. What an ordeal. Bless you for sharing this. Makes me want to shelter in place even more until they find a reliable tested vaccine.

Nonsense. What is the timeline for “a little patience”? A year, two years? What happens to public health when all human community is curtailed for six months? Twelve months? To the mental health of the elderly, kids? What happens to the developing world when the rich parts of the world stay shut down for a year?
Outdoor gatherings are low risk. Public health officials should be giving tips on how to gather safely, not keeping up this charade that life can stop indefinitely while … what? We shut down for months so they could get test and trace ready – they failed. Wait forever until the underpants gnomes intervene is not a plan.
Don’t get me started on shutting down beaches. That’s just the rich counties on the coast giving the finger to the people breathing crummy air at 105 degrees. There is nowhere less likely to involve respiratory disease transfer than a beach. And closing some just makes the others more crowded.
The punitive and prohibitive approach is pointless and ineffective. Give guidance for risk mitigation. Realism is necessary otherwise all this is just theater for the politicians’ benefit.
The health officials do not want crowds at the beaches. Obviously this was a disaster Saturday. Way too many people too close to each other spreads the virus. Not only that this has nothing to do with authorities not wanting visitors. It is common sense. We will never get out of the restrictions unless we all follow the mandated rules against COVID-19.
Please try to understand knowing that people are not trying to control you. They ask that you control yourself for the sake others. For some reason we really do have a broken society. People do not care about others and only want their personal independence without earning it. If you don’t follow the rules you will be shooting yourself in the foot by spreading the virus which makes the numbers bad. This is silly to hear people complain that the government is messing them up. No you are messing up.
Today’s paper stated that people don’t tend to congregate together on holidays anymore than non holidays because “wait for it” we are being tracked by our phones and vehicles! I didn’t tell big tech to invade my privacy and sell my data to all who ask for it.
But yet Apple won’t unlock a suspect’s phone that might hold incriminating evidence because that would just be mean. Incredible.
