An inmate from Contra Costa County is accused of a beating in June at a state prison in San Joaquin County that turned fatal last week when the victim succumbed to his injuries, according to the California Department of
Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Helder Almeida, 36, is suspected of attacking 61-year-old William Pratt on the morning of June 8 at the Deuel Vocational Institution, a facility near Tracy that houses nearly 1,500 inmates.
Almeida allegedly hit Pratt repeatedly in the head and face with his fists before correctional officers intervened. Pratt was taken to a hospital and succumbed to his injuries on Friday evening, CDCR officials said.
Almeida had come in February from Contra Costa County to serve two years and eight months in prison for possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, possession of metal knuckles, possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of an assault weapon, according to the CDCR.
Pratt had come to the prison in 2017 to serve a nine-year sentence from Los Angeles County for assault with a deadly weapon.
A prime candidate for early Covid release
As soon as Gavin hears about this, he will immediately have Almeida released from prison – and registered to vote.
And housed in a four star hotel.
One dangerous violent felon killed another dangerous violent felon. Am I supposed to care?
This is why we have prisons!
I don’t care about violent felons. I care about law abiding citizens.
Nothing to see here… Move along………….
They failed to protect the one who was beat to death. His sentence was jail not death. Need better protections. Need to keep them away from each other they should not have to live in fear while they are doing their time. Mistakes should not equal unjust death. Tragic. Prayers for the family and friends.

Another brilliant statement from the unknowing! When was the last time you stepped foot into a prison? Do you have any clue how they work? You can’t keep them isolated from others at all times. Prisons can be a dangerous place by their nature. If the inmates don’t want to be exposed to that danger, they shouldn’t commit the crimes that put them there!
Almeida is not a good person. Neither he nor Pratt has shown any respect for the rule of law. And should the governor decide to release Almeida from prison for his own safety, you won’t be able to count on anyone to protect you from an attack by him, either. Evil people do evil things.
You can thank Kamala Harris for this.
