The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors will proceed with pursuing a half-cent, 20-year sales tax measure for November’s general election ballot, though it could be derailed if a bill now languishing in Sacramento isn’t passed by the end of July.
The tax would raise an estimated $81 million a year to pay for county services including Health and Emergency Services, Safety Net Services, Housing and Early Childhood Services.
The supervisors will be presented with proposed ballot measure language at their July 28 meeting, and will have to approve a measure at that same meeting to allow enough time to get the measure on the November ballot.
County Supervisor Candace Andersen of Danville was the sole “no” vote Tuesday for moving ahead, saying she has “serious concerns” about adding further tax burdens to families already stressed by the economic effects of
the COVID-19 restrictions.
“A sales tax is the most regressive form of taxation for those who can least afford it,” Andersen said Tuesday. “I think the timing of it is really, really off.”
The Contra Costa sales tax measure will depend on passage of state Senate Bill 1349, drafted by Sen. Steve Glazer, D-Orinda, that would authorize the county to impose a transactions and use tax of up to a half-cent “for general or specific purposes to support countywide programs.”
That bill would allow such a tax to pass with only a majority vote, rather than a two-thirds vote.
That bill, and all others, are on hold as the state Senate and Assembly have postponed resumption of work after summer recess next week because COVID-19 has directly affected several staffers and at least one legislator.
When is enough actually enough taxation. Our county supervisors seem to think all of us in Contra Costa County continue to get paychecks just as they do. Perhaps they have lost touch with reality. The time has come for the county to live within its means, just as we do.
Please, everyone stand up to this abuse. Show the Supervisors that we can not take anymore increases in taxation.
For the current flock of politicians, it will never be enough. They always want more and more, and that will never cease if Californians continues to elect same old lying corrupt politicians that take our money, and then use it for something other than what it was intended to be used for. The 12 cent gas tax(the tax to protect public safety!) is a perfect example of it.
What Tugboat said. Supervisors are you listening to those who pay for your fat salaries and benefits?
No more taxes
No !
What a crock of ****. How many sources of income does the big piggy bank for “County Services” have now?Tax,Tax Tax, the democrat way!!!!
HA HA HA HA
Seriously? Another sales tax add-on? Here we have people losing their businesses and livelihoods, very high unemployment, and the supervisors want to raise the sales tax. It’s already stupidly high. Maybe they can do like the rest of us and figure out how to manage on what they have coming in.
The greedy hand of government strikes again.
We are already paying enough taxes and we are also in the middle of a global pandemic their is enough stress already why add more instead of dealing with bigger issues we are facing right now they choose to focus on this completely unacceptable..😡😡
here we go a democrat can not …repeat can not …skip a tax increase at your expense …..you are being scammed and tricked to not work and get hooked on they system ….while the county and state and anyone else who is a democrat tries to tax you fee you or raise you
again when a post like this comes up it absolutely means it is going to happen
and another one before the year closes and yet again in the first quarter of next year …..
oh boy the tax hikes are going to make the democrats look like they are on crack …..reference pelosi ….when she talks about trump
i love it keep ramping up the taxes and lying to us ….
beware the november election demorats ….
your cocky pushing of hateful sinful abuse of power is about to end with a vote
any lack luster candidate not a dem step up your day is here
we are draining the demifornia swamp
i still have no idea how a democrat voter still votes dem
for what higher taxes and being lied to …..where is your high speed train you forced us to pay for …..or your musk tunnel of fun ….or factual media …
all lies
just take one look at where any low ranking democrat politician lives
now look at where you live ……..
your voting to make us poor and them rich ….
you would think the majority of the dem voters could at least see that
or well the media does steer your opinion with FLAMATORY coverage as they know you can not make up your own mind they must tell you what to think …..
so here we are being taxed while the dem politicians force us into poverty by refusing to let us work …..showing fake numbers …thats it fake numbers make dem voters scared and sheltered and make us pay more taxes …again
i said this before ….why dont the democrats just impose 15% heck 20% tax
as long as it comes with a clause…do your job correctly as a politician or lose your money and job …..
this thousand cuts tactic of tax hikes is getting real old
and we get nothing from them …..i say we as in everyone ….
the dem voters are getting welfare and unemployment and service sucking
the rest get burdened to pay for social systems and illegals and now fake news
real old …..how about you ….are you for more taxes and less work from the board and elected slackers
and yes the board is going to give themselves a raise next year for their suffering from the 19 …..
which will mean another tax hike to cover it
and again you benefit in no way
rinse repeat …..rinse repeat
Everyone’s broke, people out of jobs, businesses closed up (again!) and these morons want to raise taxes. Talk about cognitive dissonance.
Really? Someone please tell the housing market then. No more taxes. They don’t do what they say they’re going to do anyways.
This is only the beginning! They keep getting elected so they think they can keep raising taxes.
Stop electing them.
Manage money? Why should they care, it’s not their money.
NO new taxes. They should be cutting the sales tax and every other possible tax now.
Only in CA would it be proposed that we squeeze more taxes out of people at a time of record high unemployment and government shutdowns.
If you like taxes you’ll love reading about the “Biden-Sanders” plan for tax increases. Let’s just say it was mostly inspired by the second name on the proposal.
These areas are already funded and any supposed lack of funds is due to mismanagement or possible/probable corruption. Fellow residents should be alert to this and start investigating with their own eyes and ears. Glazer’s proposal is another one to watch and should be a Red Flag to anyone reading here.
It will get voted down. When are they going to learn that the public is not their ATM that they can go to anytime they fail to manage things properly? BTW, anyone think the county should be broken up into three countries as it is probably too large to manage? Same with other large California counties?
Why don’t they just propose a 2% increase and spread it to all the cities too…since they will be needing money too? Seriously, just say no and CUT salaries and benefits, move away from pensions for ALL future hires and manage to the budget you already get. Stop nickle and diming us to death!
What’s 1/2 cents, that’s nothing, it’s only 1/2 of a penny, right? Ever notice how they never tell it like it is? Instead of thinking in terms of 1/2 cents, think in terms of percentage. It’s 1/2 percent, which doesn’t sound like much until it starts adding up over one year of spending. Eating out, something for the kids, or something for the house, clothes, gas, shoes, toys, hardware, and the list goes on. Then there’s big ticket items, a new washer and dryer, or maybe the water heater goes out. How about that new car you’ve had your eye on? For every $10,000 you spend you will be paying an extra $50 on top of the sales tax they are already taking away from you. In some parts of the county we are already paying 8.25%, that’s $8.25 for every $100 and $825 on every $10,000. Now add another 1/2% on top of that.
No to any and all tax increases. Cut back on the entitlements to the entitlement crowd and all the extra money put out to handle the protestors and their damages not to mention the criminals being released.

Keep posting! I forwarded the link to a friend who will forward it to a few more people.
Oh nice, there’s a location to sign this petition in Claycord!
Maybe the new tax also helps support Newscum’s goon squad which will be going around imposing fines on businesses and individuals who do not fully comply with the covid regulations.
Definitely No!
These calls from government to increase taxes all sound the same. They tell us we desperately need something and throw in phrases like emergency and children. Meanwhile the government worker next door retired at 55 and I believe he has a pension and healthcare for life. Somehow I never see requests for tax increases to fund pensions for government workers so they can retire at 55.
It is kind of sad that the County and Bart are both asking for more money–if they would meet us half way by living within their means, I might support them–
Absolutely NOT, they have lost their minds!
Both the Prop 13 & County additional tax increases were voted down in the last election. Why? Cuz even Californian’s get tired of all the damn taxes! Now they want to disguise it in a Health & welfare costume? Hopefully the county residents see thru this facade!
It is easy to spend other peoples money
Wonderful, this will greatly help the County as a whole. If this latest virus has shown us anything it’s that our Health Services and Emergency Services need all the help they can get to respond to any future health crises. I’d gladly pay if it meant we would be better prepared the next time something like this happens.
Get rid of the over paid executives and obscene retirement packages and then ask.
Raise your hand if you’re one of the idiots who votes for new taxes. YOU can go right ahead and pay, pay, pay all you want, but don’t force me to. Enough is enough!
I propose every time a supervisor votes to increase a tax they should automatically have it applied to them and their immediate family at twice the rate regardless if it passes. Plus they have to adopt an animal from the animal shelter. One could get this goat currently available.
Instead of complaining here, contact all the supervisors and send them the complaints. With enough, it’ll change.
Looks like this board of supervisors has sadly hitched their wagon onto the failed Marxist Democrat narratives
They will see the result of this on Nov 3
I was hoping to see more independent decision making from them
They don’t represent me
Taxation without representation will never happen
Time to succeed from the county and state. this will keep getting out of hand. screw all these crooked taxes. no accountability to where all the money has been going to. time to take care of yourself and your own towns. smaller accounts = easier accountability. everything will be eventually under the table if this crap continues. . .Raping everyone for their $$. suckers everywhere.
Since I can’t afford all the taxes and bonds being pushed by people who seem to think public funds are free, I have voted NO to all them for some time now.
NO
Anyone notice SB1349 is being crammed through with just a majority vote, not 2/3 as usual? Good grief!!
Pay up folks, I moved to Idaho 5 years ago. I need California to work so I keep getting my pension check.
ANSWER IS ALWAYS NO!!!
I have learned how to do with less. I have learned how to live within my budget.
We just voted down a sales tax increase in March, and they’re back at it … again? Guess they didn’t get the message … No New Taxes!
Wouldn’t give another cent to Contra Costa County. Tyrannical government shouldn’t be funded any further. They tank the Economy, destroy the middle class and now want more money. Enough is enough.
No. Social Services? Housing & food for mentally ill souls, who shoplift, litter, bother residents, and, incur ER bills for meds.
Should it pass that money would go intro a black hole and nobody would ever be able to know for sure what it was used for. It certainly won’t go to health care. Hotel rooms for the homeless and housing convicts probably.
Absolutely not !! Think about by the end of a year adding all this 1/2 cents you own a house and a family of four and continously trying to live decently you will end up paying hundreds of dollars extra because this 1/2 cent taxation.
Glover needs to go in November. Time and time again he pulls out a win and time and time again he works against the average CC resident. Time for a change.
Here we go again, the people are down and not working and yet Antioch council members think it is an opportune time to tax us some more. How about DeFund City Hall and all the council members. They really do not accomplish much anyways. The failure to establish rent control, help the homeless, help the senior community! seriously when they come up for election they should be voted out.
What are the funds for ? “Safety Net” is a pretty broad brush. Don’t we get to vote on this?
Welp, count me as the sole Claycord yes 😉 People are out of work and they need MORE social services as a result. Tax revenue has been next to nil lately, courtesy the state and local health departments. Federal funding to the states and local gov’ts is also down. The shortfall has to be made up somehow. This is the how.
This is just the beginning. With limited taxes coming in from fewer businesses, property tax increases will surge, sales taxes, and any other taxes the idiots in Sacramento can think of will be on the table. What is so surprising to me is how the Left never seem to vote these down. I guess if I was like the majority in California who wasn’t working, on disability, or a retired civil servant, I’d vote for those increases as well.
poor …daynight
apparently you dont realize that when the democrats make up a democrat entity like ccchealth and or air quality and or feasibility panel and such
any money that you think goes to them is actually added to the democrat politicians fun fund …..where they can roll around in it and play hide the 10 dollar bill in the pile of 100s
your belief that it actually will go to and support any kind of what ever you think it will is why this state is ……wrecked
believing a democrat politicians remarks are like giving money to a bum and them telling you they are going to use it to feed their family and pay their child support
i mean really …..even the red cross does not give the money to what ever cause at the time like fire victims or flood victims …..its all general fund money
yet democrats use it to build their wealth …as you work or rather if they let you and get taxed across the board 22% for your effort …..
and they laugh at you like your sitting on the corner with your 2 ounces of lemon aide for sale and your trying to fund your disneyland trip
stop accepting democrat lies …..unless your into that sort of thing …
Everyone, attend today’s ad hoc meeting at 1:30. Let’s fight this. Enough is enough.

Funny how Candice Andersen is always the outlier. She’s obviously the only one with an actual brain!
CA is expensive enough. The way Grusome Newsome spends money the sales tax would go to 20% soon. I myself think that 6.5% is was too much. Contra Costa is one of the highest in the state. CA is nothing but taxes, fees, surcharges and fines. The first step is to stop buying SUVs for every state vehicle. Remember when state vehicles had the sticker in the back windows saying “Official Use Only” and they were driving Ford Pintos. We do not need heroin injection centers with more funding than clinics and food pantry/kitchens/shelters. PLEASE VOTE NO ON ALL TAX INCREASES. Make them do better with what they have.
