The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.
The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.
Today’s question:
For several years, many people have been trying to get sports teams such as the Washington Redskins (who just announced today they plan to change their name), Atlanta Braves and Cleveland Indians to change their name because they claim it degrades Native Americans.
What’s your opinion on this, should the teams change their names?
Talk about it….
Of course they should be changed they are racist as hell.
When you people say everything is racist nothing is racist.
RDUB,
Hell isn’t racist, not to worry. Your reservation is still good.
SILLY
We don’t have teams named the whiteskins or blackskins. I’m not big on finding racism where it’s not, but this seams possibly reasonable. Not my choice or place to decide but I can see how native Americans could be offended or on the flip side have pride in the name. If native people have spoken against the name then remove it. If it’s the white liberal outrage mob trying to make themselves relevant then no way
Thank God there are zero mascots named after White People, except for Um….The Boston Celtics? Notre Dame Fighting Irish? Minnesota Vikings? Cleveland Browns (named after the White Owner)? Cleveland Cavaliers? Great Falls Argonauts? Mount St. Mary’s Athenians? Tampa Bay Buccaneers? Oakland Raiders? San Fransisco 49ers? George Washington Colonials? Dallas Cowboys? Holy Cross Crusaders? Wake Forest Demon Deacons? San Fransisco Dons? Union Dutchmen? Monmouth Fighting Scots? St. Mary’s Gaels? Santa Barbra Gauchos? Chabot Gladiators? Southeast Grenadiers? UC Riverside Highlanders? Indiana Hoosiers? Kansas Jayhawks? Fairleigh Dickinson Knights? Yeshiva Maccabees? Northridge Matadors? UTEP Miners? Umass Minutemen? Methodist Monarchs? Appalachian State Mountaineers? Mansfield Mounties? Xavier Musketeers? Northern Kentiky Norse? Syracruse Orangemen? New England Patriots? Cal State East Bay Pioneers? Pittsburg Pirates? New Orleans Privateers? Penn Quakers? Louisana Ragin Cajuns? Texas Rangers? UNLV Rebels? Rockford Regents? Colombia Renegades? Bethel Royals? New Orleans Saints? Alfred Saxons? Oklahoma Sooners? San Jose State Spartans? USC Trojans? North Carolina Tar Heels? San Diego Padres? Idaho Vandals? Tenessee Volunteers? Oberlin Yeomen?
How about the Oregon State Beavers? The UCLA Trojans? Some choice headlines there.
@shrektrican That’s an impressive list. So you want the name kept. Redskin could be little different as it directly refers to skin color. What do I know I’m white with a 145 IQ, I can’t relate to non rational thinking
The way I see it unless you are an American Indian then you shouldn’t really have a say one way or another on this specific Redskins topic. The same way I wouldn’t expect American Indians to have a say if I wanted to push for a team name change from the Carolina Crackers or the Appalachian State Slackjaws to something less offensive.
But we don’t have teams named like that for obvious reasons… there is nothing offensive about Vikings or 49ers or any of your other examples, except maybe the Fighting Irish, but then again I’m not Irish so not my place to make that call.
Ask the Native Americans. I don’t want to hear from anyone else.
Now that all American sports are allowed to disrespect the flag and the brave men and women who died so they can have the freedoms then enjoy, they can all kiss it where the sun don’t shine. I will never watch sports again. And everyone in my world feels the same way. How about the NBA defending the communist party of China. I guess that is ok. Ninety percent of the Indians stated they are not offended. Maybe we should rename the Chicago Whitesocks or the White House.
@Gone Great way to continue to push the false narrative that they are disrespecting the military. It has been clarified a number of times by many different people who kneel that it is not with disrespect for the military and actually originated from a kneeling veteran. How many times do you need to be told what it stands for and why? But go ahead, live in a world where you dive into conspiracy theory and confirmation bias just so you can continue to feel that hate in your heart that helps you feel alive.
@jessica:
Why would I let anyone else define for me what I find disrespectful? If you don’t stand reverently and remove your hat (if you’re male), salute when appropriate, hand over heart if you desire – you are disrespecting the flag and every individual from military to first responders who wear uniforms adorned with the flag. Even if you’re a veteran.
funny thing is, sports teams are named after things because they’re considered, strong, loyal, persistent, respected, powerful.
No team wants to be associated with weakness, selfishness and disrespect, so they choose names that represent the opposite.
Chiefs, Warriors, Braves, and even Redskins represent what’s admirable. But since it’s descriptive, it must be trashed.
I can understand the Redskins changing their name, but what’s wrong with Braves and Indians? Braves seems like an honorable name to me. I know Indians would rather be called Native Americans, but that name isn’t quite accurate because it describes anybody born here after America was named. What did the Indians call themselves before Martin Waldseemuller put a name on the continent he called the Land of Americus? Each tribe probably had their own name they identified with. Let the Indians vote on a name they feel will honor them, and if they don’t want to be honored, then change the names completely.
I think Native North Americans would rather be called by their tribe’s names, but settle for Native American. They do a lot of “settling” that gets misconstrued as “support”.
Yes. Change the name
I suggest “The Washington Weenies”
I have better things to worry about in my life than what some sportsball team is named. I don’t watch sports and couldn’t care any less about them.
“sportsball team”. That says it all. Mike.
I saw a comment on Twitter I agree with. They should change the most offensive part of the team name.
How about Trenton Redskins?
My Mother’s husband is Native American and comes from a large family. All of them are against the name change.
They love the name and are honored having an NFL team named “Redskins.” They are a conservative family and don’t look at life through the same lenses as liberals do.
You know how liberals are, they have a problem with everything and are NEVER happy.

I’m finally done with professional sports and their newfound “wokefullness”. I can find much better things to do with my money than contribute to those overpaid prima-donnas.
Tsa: [sees that people are trying to improve themselves to respect others]
Also Tsa: [is “finally done” with people]
It’s got nothing to do with respect, it’s all about the money. The need to ensure that the “fans” keep their fat paychecks flowing. And the self-serving politicians are pandering to keep getting re-elected. You need to see through the smoke to see what is really there.
Yes do away with any references to Native American words or names. As far as I’m concerned I dont want to be reminded of them at all so this change is welcome from me. Out of sight out of mind…Be sure and tear down any of their statues as well..dont wanna see those either.
So tired of snowflakes. I have heard many Native American Indians have no objections about the RedSkins name. It portrays them as warriors. Why should we always give in to loud mouths. You know most of them are brain dead.
“The State reward for dead Indians has been increased to $200 for every red-skin sent to Purgatory. This sum is more than the dead bodies of all the Indians east of the Red River are worth.”
Jessica I have heard the name thousands of times and never thought of it as derogatory. Maybe your mind is in a bad place.
Jessica, you drank the Kool-aid…spit it out quick!
Maybe we should ask Norway if we should be changing the name of the Minnesota Vikings. I’m not certain if they would be more offended with being associated with Minnesota or having a team named after their proud Vikings (who did some significant plundering and likely reached this continent before the Italian who is now out of favor).
Has anyone checked with a seahawk to see how it feels?
Jessica, I don’t need anyone to tell me how I fell and what I believe or your false nerative. I come from military and they all feel the way I do. The nba has had a long standing policy on this and that is that you stand and pay respect to the national anthem and flag. I am sure that will all of a sudden change. I am sure that they will come up with a new national anthem as well because I am sure it is racist.
Maybe it’s happening now, just listen to the first line of the National Anthem: Jose’ can you see…
Kirkwood is that the one that continues on, ” any bed bugs on me”
“
Can’t argue with that. Maybe we could just assign each team a number or letter as a name. Nothing seems appropriate anymore. San Francisco could remain the 49ers.
@Ricardoh, That’s what I’ve been saying. Lets assign each team a letter/number code like we do with airports. That way all team names will be totally meaningless, unremarkable, and easy to forget.
The “49ers” has to go because they were white men stealing native gold.
Society has become to damn sensitive! You can’t do or say anything without hurting someone’s feelings. There are more important things to worry about. I am of Italian ancestry but my feelings don’t get hurt getting called ”wop”, it’s pathetic how sissified people have become…………….

Especially when a helicopter flys over.
This whole conversation is shockingly racist and hypocritical. This conversation is in English, the very symbol of white supremacy and colonialism. Perhaps a more woke language like Pig Latin could ease the pain for some of us.
Or Ebonics?
@Kirkwood…It’s started already….baffroom, liberry, ambalance….I”ve heard them all on locals newscasts.
nytemuvr Don’t forget the ever popular, “U axin me”
Awesome!
Until the NFL allows LGBTQ players, they are a bunch of racists.
Oh the mortification, how can such an organization exist. It just makes you want to burst into tears.
Sports Illustrated has a trans male on the cover now!!
In a bikini.
Oh just get rid of all the names. Someone’s always going to be offended by something. Give them all of number. And make all their colors yellow black and white and brown. Make sure they have equal amounts of every race on every team. And everyone should get the same amount of pay no matter what.
Funny how only Wealthy White Liberals are upset with Mascots.
The NA people I know don’t like it at all, and the rest of their tribe doesn’t like it either. I’ve heard about many tribes who feel it’s a disservice by being referred to in these ways rather than an honor. Should they have any say about it? Just for the sake of decorum, but probably.
Nothing racist at all about the sports names….this is stupidity.
It’s the right thing to do, and long overdue. Unfortunately the owner is doing the right thing for all the wrong reasons. Give credit to Nike, Fedex and Pepsi for giving him a swift kick in the ass.
I don’t think it is one size fits all, and should be done on a case by case basis. Redskins is racist as hell, but some of them, like the Seminoles and Blackhawks honor the tribes they represent and help support them financially.
HEYREF
How many minorities are the there Board of Directors? What is the percentage of minorities on their management teams?
Just some more woke people trying to look good and promote their businesses.
Just remember , when someone says things are racist, they are the racist.
Others don’t give it a second thought.
