West Contra Costa Unified School District To Continue Classes Online In August, MDUSD To Discuss Plans On Monday

The West Contra Costa Unified School District will continue educating students exclusively online when classes resume Aug. 17 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under the district’s multi-phased draft plan released Thursday, students will continue distance learning at the outset of the school year until it is deemed safe to return to campuses in person.

The second phase of the district’s plan would open some school buildings as support facilities for small groups of students. District officials would continue monitoring the pandemic with the goal of moving toward all students safely returning to school.

“We hope this is an opportunity to serve the students who need the most support while following the health and safety guidelines issued by local, state and federal health officials,” district Superintendent Matthew
Duffy said. “From the feedback we’ve received, it is clear that safety and equity are the two main priorities for this community.”

Well of course! Unbelievable!!

…. says the non-school-staff member who of course isn’t concerned about being exposed, very possibly suffering long-term health effects – IF he or she survives!

Oh but I AM a school staff member who believes all of this is BS. I’ve gotten my share of illnesses from students throughout the years and never quit because of it. Did you know kids are flu carriers? Haven’t seen a teacher or any staff member die from the flu yet. Oh, maybe it’s because we’ve built an immune tolerance. Oh, and btw, kids don’t carry this BS virus. Even if they did, I would say open the schools. We certainly don’t close the schools for any other virus.

I’m curious ZZ… are you a teacher…one who is in a classroom for hours at a time with the students? Or are you mainly outdoors enjoying the fresh air with the students?

Okay, that’s the final straw. This is nothing but politics. The CDC said to open schools. A bunch of other countries are opening schools. This is just politics in an election year. Eff you. Trump will win a second term and you useful idiots are helping him. Thank you for that! God! The left is so damn ignorant!

If Trump had said keep the schools closed the districts would be opening.

I know this sounds silly, but my daughter and I were just talking about how exciting the first day of school is with the new shoes, backpack, lunch box and new friends. I feel sorry for the new Kindergartners, parents or even new teachers missing that all important first day.

@Barbie Girl – no silly at all. I’m always inspired when children look forward to the first day of school with excitement. Hopefully the same children will never outgrow their delight of learning.

Suggestion: Assuming learning is online, consider going ahead with the plans you and your daughter have discussed: New shoes, backpack, lunch box, etc. You can still pack the lunch box for your daughter’s lunch, even if eating at home. On opening day, take a few “First Day of School” pictures for keepsakes.

True, you are still going to be missing important social aspects of school (new friends), but perhaps you can instill some aspects of the ‘old normal’ into our ‘new normal’. Mary

This has always been about politics. These anti Americans don’t give a rat’s a#s about your kids. This is why I say there is no science behind these decisions and why I say were a mask if you want, don’t if you want. I get together with friends. we don’t were mask. Take back your country and vote them all out.

I have kids in MDUSD and I really really hope that MDUSD does not go with all distance learning. Their recent proposal was for 2 days per week in person and even though that’s a small amount it’s better than nothing. All distance learning is an absolute disaster for most kids and families. I realize we need to be safe and keep staff safe too but all distance learning feels very extreme.

Open the schools.

Please call in on Monday (has to be Monday) to leave a comment for the board meeting. Tell them that we need the schools open!
