A track replacement project that crews started in April near BART’s Orinda station was finished early so service shutdowns through the area on the Fourth of July holiday weekend will no longer be necessary, the transit agency said Tuesday.

Crews had been working on prior weekends to replace equipment in the trackway, including some components that dated back to when BART first started service through the area in 1973.

The work with contractor ProVen Management included replacing track switches that can measure up to 200 feet long and allow trains to move from line to line, and installing about 3,000 feet of new rail, according to BART.

The next BART track replacement project is set to take place starting on the weekend of July 18-19 south of the Hayward station. The work will also take place on the weekends of Aug. 1-2, Aug. 22-23, Sept. 5-7, and Sept. 19-20.
