State Of California Announces COVID-19 Contact Tracing Campaign

The State of California announced the launch of a public awareness campaign for the state’s COVID-19 case investigation program.

The “California Connected” public awareness campaign — which will include radio and social media ads, billboards and videos in multiple languages — is intended to get state residents to “answer the call” when their local public health department reaches out to recruit them as a contact tracer, according to Governor Gavin Newsom.

“That simple action of answering the call could save lives and help keep our families and communities healthy,” Newsom said.

Newsom has said the state hopes to train roughly 20,000 contact tracers by the first week of July.

California is using contact tracing to connect with people who are COVID-19 positive, so they can figure out who they might have exposed without knowing it, so those individuals can be contacted, too.

Why? Cause I will not comply with something that violates my privacy, my life? Sorry, when Newscum abolished the 60 day limit on a state emergency on day 1 tells me a lot about what this scum is about. I have nothing to hide, but I will not be subjected to testing unless it is my choice. My children will not be tested. This is not Germany during WW2, this is supposed to be AMERICA where we have freedom and choices.

His petty pansy priorities have been revealed: his Napa Valley (which is wide open where he has his wineries), his hair which is entitled to cuts while the rest of us grow like weeds and his undocumented friends who continue to prop up their fruits stands while also blowing allergens, noisy disruption and (as the experts say) airborne viruses into our yards with their disgusting machinery and smog-polluting ready-to-fall apart trucks. Not to mention Gav’s travel as he splits time back and forth between California and Montana, his daughter’s namesake. Valuing equality and not liberty makes no sense. Pelosi should be the first to try to reform nursing homes since she’s one foot in the grave.

“Answer the call” used to be synonymous with “kick the bucket”, euphemismistically speaking. Just sayin’.

Over 2 months to now figure that this might be helpful. Guess the state was more concerned with releasing prisoners and giving money to illegals. They should promote public awareness of CA’s demise with the decades of past inept mismanagement that continues…

Exactly. Why is this happening so slowly? It boggles the mind. Millions of people out of work, lots of state and county employees idled, and the training is like 40 hours. Yet we’re not going to hit our target until July? Why on earth didn’t all this happen six weeks ago? We could youhave hired or onboarded 40,000 people by now, with hotels in every town dedicated to optional housing for confirmed cases so it doesn’t spread so much within households. The economy is bleeding out, with long-term effects that nobody knows how to measure or predict, and we’re waiting six to eight weeks longer than necessary to do the easy part. It’s hard to ramp up testing if everybody in the world wants the same tests. It was hard to buy PPE for the same reason. It’s hard to manage unpredictable demands on hospitals. It’s NOT hard to hire or build a volunteer force to do contact tracing. literally every credit let plan for re-opening has made clear that we would need this for the past eight weeks or more. This is a disgrace.

The last paragraph of this entry is concerning. It says “California IS using contact tracing … with people who have tested positive so that they can figure out who they might have exposed without knowing it, so those individuals can be contacted too.” Did I miss something? I understand asking people who have tested positive to notify family, friends, and neighbors, just in case. But when/how did it get to, “who they might have exposed without knowing it” and “so those individuals can be contacted too”.? Am I reading more into this than there is? How do they know who they “might have exposed without knowing it”? How do the tracers have contact info for these “individuals” that the patient does not know? For years, there have been notifications on the news about anonymous patients who tested positive for hepatitis — followed by, ‘if you visited this restaurant (or store or whatever), you may need to be tested’. That type of notification is fine with me. I’m not onboard with any Bluetooth tracking of our movements and contacts so those “individuals can be contacted too”. That is too creepy for me!!

It just means they didn’t know they were contagious, and may have infected them while incubating the disease or while asymptomatic. I agree that involuntary tracing via technology is not ok. But that’s not what the sentence means.

20,000 more govt employees and where is the money coming for that??? And on a side note…..what happened to all the civil liberties the left was screaming about when law enforcement wanted to use LPR (license plate readers) at choke points in a city and even facial recognition….I am sure I could think of a couple more if i thought about it…

@Led I understand your frustration but you should understand the constitutional implications of what they are talking will keep it from becoming a reality. As I understand tracing could have helped at the onset, it’s pretty pointless as this is in every county, state and country by now. Basically all they can do is test and treat the ill. Still waiting on hard science as far as incubation time and how contagious it actually is. Just 2 days ago they said it’s not as bad as they thought on surfaces. Probably best to stay calm and wait for the data to justify throwing our rights out the window because some people act like we can’t live life without this. I can see it drug out in court for a long time so we better start thinking about working with what we got now.

Get your facts straight. They did and still do contract tracing for aids. This is one of the to they use to control the spread of the disease.

How can you all be so opposed to trying to inform others they were exposed and need to get a test?! Both conservatives and liberals who grasp the basics of epidemiology understand the importance of this.
I was traced and contacted that I was on a flight with a positive person (they didn’t say who it was) and 5 days later I was very sick. That allowed me to get a test right away, which was difficult at the time. Luckily after the call I knew to isolate and not expose others. That was March, and I’m still positive and quarantined. The health department asked me about who I may have been in contact with and asked no personal information. I was happy to try to inform others they were at risk (you don’t always know who they are). You don’t have to answer a question you think is invasive.
Don’t have a knee jerk rebellious rejection of known ways to slow the virus and help others.
If I hadn’t been contacted I very well could have infected you before my symptoms became bad.

You are absolutely correct. I am afraid so many are using the tracing idea as a political issue. Many poor folks actually believe their personal rights are being violated if they must comply to the mandates of COVID19. Like having to wear a mask. They actually think it us their right to expose others to the virus. They blame the authorities not the virus. So as a result these people also believe being traced is violating their privacy. They are self centered selfish reactive people. Very disturbing. They still may think the virus is not that dangerous. Ugh!!

So let’s see, you got very sick 5 days after being around someone. (Im assuming it was Covid19). You got tested in March for something. Now at the end of May you are not sick yet still testing positive and are in “quarantine” correct? So you’re in quarantine for 2 months now, not sick but testing positive for what I assume Covid. So theoretically after recovering from the sickness, you could remain quarantined for the rest of your life if you never test negative. I’m not really sure that’s inline with the data and science on this matter, but very interesting story. Thanks for sharing.

This is the line that really got me wondering:

It appears with those 2 statements you attempt to not only shame those who reject the concept, but almost threaten (but not really) others into submitting to fear. Very calculated wording with very intent messaging.

The whole story is questionable to begin with, followed up with hardline propaganda in a classically scripted narrative.

@Smee – I agree with you about being contacted after a flight, if someone onboard tested positive. The airlines already has your name and email address. But I do not like the idea of Bluetooth contact tracing apps on phones like they’re using in China and South Korea. I know, I know, we’re always on camera and our phones are already tracking all of our whereabouts and purchases. The lockdown is bad enough. An app tracking us during this virus is just too much. I wouldn’t install it.

Popcorn, the reason you argue with emotion is because it can’t be done legally. The reason we have the Constitution is to shut down irrational appeals to somehow give up our rights for the greater good. It is not selfish to point out that a group of people refuse to acknowledge the constitution even exists. You have the freedom to communicate in whatever fashion you choose BECAUSE of the constitution. Make no mistake about it, the argument based in emotion is a ploy to subvert the law.

And its Sam for the score. I am not buying the “Smee” story. It is too convenient and too much phrasing that sound like a public service message: “positive person” “allowed me” “I knew to” “not expose others” “asked no personal information” and so on in addition to Sam’s critique. Communist China has what is called the 50 Cent Party (see Wikipedia) which are people paid by the government to do social media posting to influence public opinion. Is that where we are now? Sad.

Sam, sorry you think my story is suspect. It’s all quite true. And until this last week my xrays showed my covid pneumonia was still quite bad so that’s why the long quarantine. Im hoping this weeks covid test will come back negative as I finally feel better. I know many others in my essential industry with similar stories. Sorry my story doesn’t align with your concept of the illness.
As far as being hard line propaganda, you’re hardly right. I would likely not agree to a bluetooth app on my phone. But I am probably one of the few commenting that have been on both ends of the tracing. Is was not invasive or asking/revealing any personal information, as is often implied by the angry responses. I’m glad I was traced and contacted and glad the hotel staff and others I was in contact with were contacted. I actually care about others not getting sick and stopping this virus. It’s horrible.

This invasion of privacy may have been necessary and even useful 2 or 3 months ago. Doing it now is just a ‘feel good’ by another incompetent politician.

Mongoose, your comment doesn’t make sense. I was questioned by the health department shortly after my first positive test in early April. I told them the hotel and flights and restaurants I was in after exposure. I suppose that could be called revealing personal information, but that sacrifice was unquestionably outweighed by possibly helping others that may be affected. I don’t feel violated by having the hotel maid be informed she was cleaning a covid positive room. Would you want to know if you had been sitting next to a covid positive person on a plane? That would involve tracing, even though you would never be told their name.
And as far as tracing not being valuable now, the virus is still out there and spreading. It will get better with mitigation efforts.

So SMee, was it March or April. Earlier you said you were tested in March, or am I misreading that? Now you say April.

Your story is suspect, as others have pointed out. tested in later March, early April (whatever) and still sick. I have family in other states that were positive and were over it in a couple of weeks. The fact that you still have it 8 weeks later … is very suspect based on the information to the public. Not saying you didn’t …but your story seems ‘off’.

And Tracing is NOT mitigation. The definition of mitigation is to reduce the seriousness or painfulness. Tracing does not do that. Tracing will tell us who might have been exposed. It does not reduce the seriousness of your exposure or the painfulness, it *might* prevent others from being infected, but based on the drop of the ‘R’ value and the fact that it does not live on surfaces, per the CDC/WHO, even the tracing to prevent others is now suspect.

Parent, if you must know my personal details in order not to dismiss my experience, I was notified I was exposed on a March 30 flight (when I would have contracted it) and was sick and tested on the 3rd of April. True that many people with the virus have no symptoms after a couple weeks.Many don’t have symptoms at all. However if you get the covid pneumonia that can develop from it, that takes much longer to fight off, and one’s depleted immune system has a harder time fighting off the virus itself. Xray and tests confirm this. Do you think the people who are on a ventilator for over a month (which a number of my coworkers have been) are faking it?
As far as tracking being a mitigation effort, no it’s not for an individual patient, but it is for the spreading of the virus to the general population. This has been repeated often by the White House experts at the press conferences, as well as any epidemiology experts.
The current trend these days to dismiss everything one hears that doesn’t support their world view as fake news is very disturbing. We have a lot to learn about this new virus and having a large part of the population resisting information that isn’t convenient.
Much of my information comes from my doctor and heads of the covid response medical team at John Muir. I don’t believe they have an agenda other than stopping this virus.

Very few individuals require ventilators. Now you now say “a number of your coworkers have been” ..Sounds likely.. you don’t work in an asbestos factory by chance do you? And yes, we are aware of the activist position some at John Muir taken. Are you on staff?

Then I called you out on your March vs April testing. You seem to have a story for everything … Now ‘a lot of your coworkers’ are on ventilators or have been for over a month, sorry, you must know everyone in the hospital that has COVID!

You have conversations with the heads of the John Muir Covid response team, you must be a very important person. My cousin, infected in another state, did not talk to anyone on the COVID response team except for her doctor.

The current trend is to dismiss things that you do not agree with, but as you have seen from my posts, I love to report the raw data so people can make informed decisions. I do not care if it is what I believe or not, the data is the data and I will let the cards fall where they may.

With your ‘new normal’, the travel industry is dead. Unemployment sits at close to 20%. People lose homes and are living in cars. Great that rent is forgone, but the mortgage is not, so when the bank takes the rental home form the landlord, you still get kicked out! The mental anguish, suicide and domestic rates are climbing drastically, but this is your new normal? And you are okay with that?

You have been duped! The fatality rate is nowhere close to what they are reporting. It is below 1% based on multiple independent studies. Yeah, some of you folks on here like to challenge the Stanford one, but many many others have now been done supporting the same numbers! There are not MILLIONS dead like they said, there are around 100K. SIP is not the reason why, cause as many of the folks on here like to report, they see all their neighbors in the streets talking and hanging out with each other.

The government has no business knowing who I am in contact with, where I go, or what I do unless I am suspected of a crime and they have a warrant for this info. Even then, I would not freely offer this info or research this info about others.

Paranoid much? No the government doesn’t got you. The tech companies got you. That issue should be resolved this summer
