WARNING: GRAPHIC VIDEO

The Walnut Creek Police Department (WCPD) is asking for help in identifying two suspects involved in a shooting that occurred in the 1200 block of Newell Avenue on Thursday night.

The following information is from the WCPD:

On May 21, 2020, at approximately 6:23 p.m., the Walnut Creek Police Department responded to the report of gunshots heard in the area of the 1200 block of Newell Avenue. Officers arrived on scene and located bullet casings, shattered glass and drops of blood in the area.

At approximately 6:36 p.m., officers learned that two adult males were transported to local hospitals for gunshot wounds related to this incident. Both males sustained non-life threatening injuries and are in stable condition.

Officers located video surveillance of the parking lot, which showed two suspects armed with handguns approach the passenger side of a parked vehicle.

At the time of the incident, one victim was seated in the passenger side of the parked vehicle. The suspects, who were wearing face masks, immediately shot at the victim. The victim was struck at least one time. The driver of the parked vehicle, identified as Detroit, Michigan resident John Rankin, returned fire at the two suspects and struck an innocent bystander, who was seated in a nearby vehicle.

The shots fired by Rankin also struck a second vehicle that was parked in the parking lot. The suspects fled the scene in an unknown make and model vehicle. At this time, the suspects have not been identified.

The suspects are described as dark skinned adult males driving a light colored sedan.

As a result of the investigation, John Rankin was arrested for Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Shooting into an Inhabited Vehicle.

Today, the Walnut Creek Police Department is releasing this video and asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspects. At this time, a motive for the shooting has not been determined.

If anyone has information regarding this incident please call Detective Leonard at 925-256-3523.

I hope that German Shepherd is okay.

I do believe that “light colored sedan” is in fact a silver Audi A5 coupe.

Yes it is. 2007-2011 A5 2 door coupe. Also known as a First Generation, Pre-Facelift”. Hard to find the production numbers.

Detroit meets Oakland in Walnut Creek.

My car identifying days are a bit rusty but it looks to be an Audi, possibly an E-Tron?

Definitely an A5, 2007-2011 coupe.

“ Detroit, Michigan resident “

Unmmm what???? Shelter in different state??

Did this John Rankin not know that Gov. Newsom says that non-essential travel is not permitted at this time?

The man from Detroit broke Newsom’s nonessential traveling order.

That alone should qualify him for at least a ticket.

But I think this shooting was a hit. So these guys must be criminals.

That’s a free pass in CA.

Kind of odd, Rankin does not shoot first then defends himself and is arrested. Sounds like W.C. PD is trying to look good with an arrest. Based on the above mentioned incident not sure why he was arrested..

I think he was arrested for being a lousy shot.

Chuck,

If you think THAT was self defense, I pray to God YOU don’t own any firearms.

The best DA Becton would go for is carrying a concealed weapon, Ranking is allowed to defend himself.

Jeff,

If you’re going to go down the self defense rabbit hole, the only thing that even resembles “self defense” is his first shot at the Audi. Even that shot is taken with blatant disregard for proper return fire. Watch the video again. The muzzle of the gun is pointed toward the right front tire of the Audi he exits his vehicle and you’ll two muzzle blasts, one at the tire and one toward the roof. No clue what he’s shooting at, what’s beyond his “intended target”, or how to use that weapon. That ain’t self defense, that’s reckless endangerment. His third shot? That’s just criminal.

1791,

I could never find in the penal code where good marksmanship is required. Sorry, a good attorney(PD) will have this down to concealed carry in fifteen minutes. Hey, WCPD could have written it up as 664/187 Attempted Murder if they wanted to.

Jeff,

Discharging a firearm at an occupied dwelling, discharging a firearm within city limits, assault with a deadly weapon, etc. Plenty of other charges.

If I was parked right down there getting a Casper hotdog and I saw that. I honestly would prob ram straight into the shooters car so they ain’t going nowhere, if anything try to hit them

Ram into them and lose your life to gunshots? Go right ahead my guy

Damn out of towners.

Parked in a handicap space, too.

The way I read it he returned fire but shot an unrelated person sitting in another car. He needed to be arrested.

was waiting for this to happen and now that it has
expect more like it ….

but no worries the DA has stated many a time that anyone of color will be plead out …..

The suspects are described as dark skinned adult males driving a light colored sedan.

self rehab no fines and a promise not to do it again
the DA has spoken …you are fodder for a democrat chaos scheme meant to control you with fear …soon you will pass another tax hike to curb the crime that the politicians created with the help of democrat DA and media

stay at home or be shot is what you are being told now

I would guess these guys wont even be caught and if so will be plead out as usual

wow just wow

be safe and fend for yourself no one is helping you …the police are all tied up by political lethargy

“control you with fear”

You may want to re-read your own post there, Random.

sanctioned creeps

NO SURPRISES THERE.
Where’s their masks?
Why are they parked in a handicap spot?
Did you cite them for littering….Cup?

BTW, you can start using your contact tracing on CRIMINALS.

Well now, CA already has half of nations homeless here.
Why not half of nation’s criminals.

Lets see, what are the advantages for them, gun laws in this state mean likelihood of their victims being armed is very low.
State has been for years emptying it’s state prisons.
An has been coming up with ways to make charging a criminal with a Felony more difficult.

Why not come to CA to do crimes.

Thats a dog not a person in the driver seat waiting for its owner to return back in the blue vehicle next to the escalade.

So, the legalization of pot is going exactly how everyone but the potheads predicted.

We didn’t vote for that. That was Newsom who sold corporate weed.

@sam
California voters passed Prop 47

How is this related to “pot”?

The only ones I feel bad for are the bystanders.

I totally agree.

I know, right? Silly ruffians, don’t they know we only allow white collar crime in Walnut Creek?

Shooting a dog is Okay? Let me call Peta…….even DA Becton wouldn’t be able to drop charges then.

STOP using the term “self defense”! These are complete idiots that have no idea how to use the sights on a firearm. And suggesting the possibility this jackass had a carry permit???

1791,

Sorry, but Rankin fired back to defend his life, granted that he’s not very good. Actually I’m surprised that he did not turn the gun sideways….hood style.

Fifteen years in law enforcement.

1791, I’d love to see you hop out stand still and aim down your site for a perfect self defense grouping. This ain’t the movies.

Weig,

If he had responded properly, Audi boy would be past tense or trying to drive himself to the hospital and no innocent bystanders would have been in harms way.

If he is a Detroit resident, then there’s exactly ZERO chance he has a permit that’s valid in California. But, if the gun is registered to him (which is unlikely, IMO), it’s still only a misdemeanor to carry it concealed. The innocent person he shot was clearly accidental, and will probably end up being a civil matter, rather than criminal.

I can totally see this guy arguing self-defense and getting off with probation (assuming he doesn’t have prior felonies or other aggravating circumstances).

Have no fear citizens of Walnut Creek, 108RS is 10-8, with his trust sidekick…formerly of CoCo.

After close review it appears the “large bag of pot” is Mr. Rankin’s hat. Prop 64 had no influence on the wearing or dropping of hats.

That’s not a bag of pot, it’s his hat that falls off. There is something that falls from the victim’s lap as he exits the rear door and then he falls on it. Can’t tell what it is.

Local Lady,

Good catch on the hat. Looks like a red cell phone the guy drops then kicks it away while falling.

Heard afterwards there was what they used to call back in the day a “homie drop-off” at the hospital. Hope they ticketed him for the handicapped parking violation too!

pretty sure that wasn’t a random shooting. Some devious mess going on between the four of them!

looks like they went out the wrong exit for the fastest freeway entrance.. It’s a one way street where they turned. Would not want to be in their way when they tore out of there.

It’s obvious that the suspects knew where to find the victims. The scumbags in the Audi where probably going to buy drugs but changed their minds and decided to rob them instead.

After reviewing the video more carefully, I stand corrected.
Those of you are right – It is the driver’s hat that falls off his head onto the asphalt.

I hate admitting defeat.

@DVC student,

I hope you mean you hate being wrong, that’s pretty reasonable. Admitting you’re wrong when you are is the mark of a reasonable person and, in my opinion, commendable.

Because you have admitted you’re wrong I will take your arguments more seriously when I disagree with you, for whatever that’s worth.

I live near there. This is beyond distressing.

There goes the property values in that area.
