President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday morning the Bay Area will receive more than $700 million in federal funding.
The funds will be used to support continued operations and workers at San Francisco International Airport, as well as transit services like BART and Muni amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“This money will aid in economic recovery!” he said.
According to BART Board of Directors member Janice Li, the $700 million President Trump is referring to is from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
“If he cared about BART (he doesn’t), he and Mitch McConnell would move forward with passing and signing the HEROES Act for the next $3T of critical emergency relief funding,” she said on Twitter.
The HEROES, or Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions, Act was passed by the House last week and proposes a $3 trillion stimulus bill.
The official BART Twitter account responded to President Trump, saying “Thank you Mr. President for the funds. We’re grateful you & Congressional leaders prioritized transit in the CARES Act. @MTCBATA distributed the 1st tranche of CARES Act funds to BART, @sfmta_muni & local transit. Funds will help bridge this fiscal year’s COVID-19-induced deficit.”
Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, BART, Muni and other Bay Area transit agencies have reported historic drops in ridership.

I too am in the ‘burn it to the ground’ camp. BART is bloated, mismanaged, corrupt, filthy, dangerous, overpriced and unreliable.
Other than that, it’s OK I guess.

1. Automate all BART trains eliminating drivers. (The technology is there)
2. Place an armed officer at all fare gates to stop fair cheaters. This has the potential savings to the transit system of more than $25 Million (Annually). Figures before the virus.
3. Stop charging for parking

5.Lower fares with the elimination of drivers.

Listen all the way through to each director and what they have to say about whether BART should make any attempt at all to cut costs of running the service given the 93% drop in ridership and projected 27% drop in sales tax revenue. All but 2 Directors, advocate for status quo pre-COVID spending levels plus some for the FY21 budget year, even though ridership is not expected to reach more than 50% average by the end of FY21 in a best case projection. The budget scenario targeted contains no layoffs, no furloughs, and even includes the annual 2.75% raise for all employees in July.
This meeting occurred 2 days after the GM joined other transit agencies in pleading for more transit emergency funding contained within the HEROES Act. BTW, the HEROES Act contains a provision that any agency receiving money CANNOT layoff or furlough any workers.
All this while the Planning and Development division (develops your parking lots into housing) hales a $100M per year budget within the operating budget.
If the rest of the board were smart, they’d censure Li for that comment! What an idiot!
