Los Angeles County Will Likely Keep Stay-At-Home Orders In Place Through July, Public Health Director Says

If you planned to go to Los Angeles this summer, you might have to reconsider.

Los Angeles County’s stay-at-home order will likely be extended until the end of July, unless county health officials see “dramatic change in this virus or in the tools” available to fight COVID-19, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, the county’s top public health official, told the Board of Supervisors Tuesday, according to a report from Fox Los Angeles.

Ferrer’s comments came during a debate over how long a moratorium on evictions should remain in place. She did not directly address the extension of the current public health “Safer-at-Home” order, which is set to expire May 15, Fox L.A. reported.

In Los Angeles County, 32,250 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed, and 1,569 people have died. The total population of L.A. County is 10,119,000.

Who would have guessed the Democratic strong holds would hold the people hostage to get bailouts from the federal government. Wait for your evening update from contra costa health to find out if you are free or not.

Yeah, but just wait till Democrat rulers, er, I mean elected officials have to lay off public employees by the thousands. Those folks will not just hand out torches to the rioters, they will point out where the politicians hide.

Will May 12, 2020 - 2:24 PM - 2:24 PM

We just finished a 2500 mile drive over four days from Chicago to San Francisco. There really isn’t any lockdown; people are out EVERYWHERE. Traffic on the freeways iestimated at 85% to 90% of normal. Only people we saw wearing masks were fast food workers and the occasional 75-year-old grandmother. People are clearly fed up with the lockdown BS and going back to their normal lives.

Cyn May 12, 2020 - 7:40 PM - 7:40 PM

Will, did you find open motels/hotels? The ones I checked out were either closed or open to essential workers only.

Will May 13, 2020 - 6:22 AM - 6:22 AM

@Cyn, no problem whatsoever finding open motels. Never even made a reservation just walked in and booked a room. Hotels look to be around 60 or 70% full.

What an interesting update. I’ve been out observing too. These last two weeks have picked up locally, too. DWNTWN Concord is opening up slowly. So nice to see the respectful distancing.

Guarantee our leadership will want to outdo them … so do I hear August?

So a 4.5 month shut down for them? Wow! Just mind blowing!

2.5 more months, how many more deaths from suicide? How much more depression? How much more abuse? How many more businesses go bankrupt?

Yeah, some of you will argue that we are saving lives by quarantining in place. Prove it. The questions I raised above have been answered by Berkeley, Santa Clara and others already. Santa Clara stated that they are seeing an alarming increase in domestic violence cases. You cannot prove that this quarantine is saving lives. Every study that has been brought to us by leaders has been wrong. There will be piles of dead bodies in the streets even if we shelter in place we were told, where are those bodies? We will need 1000’s of ICU beds even if we shelter in place, we are at ~20 in Contra Costa County today. Every prediction has been wrong, this continued lock up is so somebody can get something. I really wish I knew who that was, and what they wanted, so we could give it to them and get out of this hell.

T. Payne May 12, 2020 - 3:44 PM - 3:44 PM

About a year ago, Bill Maher said the only way Democrats can beat Trump in 2020 is if the economy tanks. There have been many other celebrities and politicians who have also mentioned that as long as the economy is strong, Trump will get a second term. When you look at who has something to gain by the continued house arrest of the American People and the economic carnage it is causing, by their own admission it would be Democrats. The very people who are insisting on prolonged house arrest of the American People are the ones who have the most to gain from a recession, at least in their own mind. They are counting on Americans being too afraid or uninterested, or just too caught up in their “resistance to the orange man” to see what is really happening . They are playing games with our lives and lively hoods. The end game is absolute power, one party rule. Just something to think about.

TD May 12, 2020 - 4:11 PM - 4:11 PM

Parent, very valid questions/concerns.

I have certainly not dismissed Covid, and been much better than most others about following the lockdown, but I’m getting increasingly concerned about ideologies/politics running the show. It appears officials may be picking and choosing which science they want to follow, being fairly inconsistent and arbitrary with their restrictions, and overreaching in many cases. The media seems to be massively taking things out of perspective, whipping up panic, slandering mitigating data and profiting off of the whole thing. I don’t say this to minimize the legitimate Covid dangers, but I fear we’ve lost our way.

Chuckie’s Wife May 12, 2020 - 4:41 PM - 4:41 PM

@ T. Payne – that would all be a consideration if it was happening only in the US. No way the Democrats could rally the entire world to tank the worldwide economy just to oust Trump. They don’t have that much power.

The Fearless Spectator May 12, 2020 - 5:20 PM - 5:20 PM

T. Payne: You are wise beyond your years. Mr. Musk is not the only one who may leave California for Texas.

Gittyup May 12, 2020 - 5:47 PM - 5:47 PM

It isn’t beside the point to suggest that the medical profession is reaping huge rewards from all this, as well. They advised the shut down, the social distancing, and the masks. They seem to have been revising their restrictions, making them tighter and tighter as time has gone along and more doubt about their authority and advice arise.

What are they reaping as rewards? Fewer visits to Emergency Rooms, health care workers protesting long hours and insufficient equipment, what looks like less to do. With the high rate of death among the elderly, it eliminates patients that are costing them money when the are paid so little reimbursement from Medicare. They are showing the nation that a single-payer system just won’t work. In a single-payer system, they get pennies on the dollar for each patient they treat. With the high rate of virus infection among those who have pre-existing conditions, in short, those who visit doctors regularly, they are eliminating a whole troublesome element in their practices.

Medical professionals are being heaped with glory and reward for their dedication when it really looks like they don’t have very much to do in response to the virus. Free meals, flyovers, accolades, it never ends. Considering what we are hearing about the special arrangements made to handle the overflow of virus sufferers, basically that they don’t exist, it would seem that most of the medical profession is standing around doing nothing at this time.

Atticus Thraxx May 12, 2020 - 6:47 PM - 6:47 PM

I honestly and truly feel sorry for you guys. To on one hand believe anyone gives a damn enough about you to control you, and on the other that Dems/Libs are so heinous an incompetent criminal like Trump is an acceptable alternative to them. You’re in a tough spot. But you seem to be bearing it with grace, dignity and emotional intelligence, and that’s what’s important. Bless your hearts. 😉

This is absolute lately reckless. Time to recall the County Supervisors is the font overrule the doctor they put in place. The doctor of course only sees sickness and a need to prevent it. However, in the real and functioning works we get sick and sometimes die of it. We cannot continue staying in our homes and disengage from life.

They better spend 5 million dollars on an educational ad campaign or be ready to call out National Guard from three surrounding states.

Short term they need to enact strict procedures for all who come in contact with elderly in high density situations or be prepared for 1,000 additional or more dead.

Kris May 12, 2020 - 3:19 PM - 3:19 PM

So with those number of cases and deaths here are the percentages, on the LA County website it states out of the 10.04 million people who live there there are 32,258 confirmed cases that is .003% of the population and there are 1,569 confirmed deaths that is .00015% of the population so again why are they locking down everyone until July this is absolutely ridiculous! Yes any death is bad but the damage this is going to do to the economy is going to be worse. We can all be cautious and open up all businesses.

Chuckie’s Wife May 12, 2020 - 4:46 PM - 4:46 PM

@Kris – you got the math wrong. It’s .3% and .015% respectively. Still, questionable that they would have to go to the end of August.

Anonymous May 12, 2020 - 6:45 PM - 6:45 PM

He just forgot to multiply by 100 to convert to a percentage. Most people can’t even get that far.

But he makes a good point: Are we willing to destroy our economy to save the elderly and people with comorbidities, such as obesity, that are due to their own bad life decisions? Obesity and high blood pressure are rampant in some communities and even though these are treatable problems, some choose not to deal with them. Must we all suffer for their sake?

And it’s not simply a question of people taking 4 months off work. Many small businesses will be totally destroyed for good. Businesses people spent their lives building. Their American Dream will be in shambles permanently. People like this have nothing to lose and I fully expect to see blow-back, starting against any police agencies that attempt to enforce these unconstitutional orders.

Chuckie’s Wife May 12, 2020 - 7:32 PM - 7:32 PM

@Anonymous – yes, the point is not lost on me. I’ve been grappling with the same moral/ethical question ever since this began. We do not have the right to take something from someone else for our own gain (be safe/save our lives). It is immoral to save ourselves and condemn someone else to die or lose their livelihood instead – 30+ million out of work in the US alone (how many will die from suicide, heart attacks, strokes, murder, domestic violence?) 265 million estimated to starve worldwide because of breakdowns in the supply chain because of shut downs (per the UN).

Anon May 12, 2020 - 3:19 PM - 3:19 PM

addlepate May 12, 2020 - 4:41 PM - 4:41 PM

Gee, I wonder if population desity has anything to do with the cases in New York, New Jersey, and L.A.??? Can you imagine that in New York and New Jersey the virus was being spread through the building’s ventilation ducts during those cool evenings in January and February. It was being pumped into people’s rooms. Honestly, I don’t blame anyone. No one knew how it was spread, how to protect themselves, etc.. It’s just a shame. I don’t blame Fauci precisely, but his shelter at home advice may not have been the best advice. Then again, there are so many varieties of existing afflictions, spiced with underlying conditions, it seems there is not a one-size-fits-all solution either. Feels like society in general bought a lemon of a new car. Should have been fine, but no one can fix it.

Haven’t heard one news story about the mentally ill with underlying health conditions, and how their doing. Guess they’re not a voting class so it won’t be in the media. Hope they’re doing okay. Anyone know of a news source on that, or have personal experience?

Cellophane May 12, 2020 - 4:42 PM - 4:42 PM

Once the bureaucrats get the power, they never it back.

I’ve said this from the beginning of this farce.

It’s more about the power over the people than it is about the health emergency.

From POTUS to the City Council, it’s all about control.

Totalitarianism has been unleashed and unless or until the people do something about it, we are all stuck with it.

chuckie the troll May 12, 2020 - 4:43 PM - 4:43 PM

For those of us old enough to remember the Iranian crisis back in 1979-80… America held hostage, Day 61.

BTW- Guess what happens when people are out of work and it gets really hot in cities like LA? I see riots happening, planned or spontaneous, and it won’t be pretty.

My mom is in an assisted care facility and usually very compliant, but even she is getting to the end of her rope.

Wage Slave May 12, 2020 - 7:01 PM - 7:01 PM

My mom is in her mid seventies, the prime age all this garbage is meant to protect. And all she wants is to get the hell out of her house and do some shopping. She is going nuts cooped up at home. She is disabled, so hikes aren’t really an option for her, but going somewhere she can lean on a cart and browse through clothes is one of the few things that she gets to do to have some fun away from home. Who gets to decide for the elderly that their quality of life doesn’t matter anymore? Apparently the county health officers.

My friend was telling me his father’s friend, a man of 74, was at the docs for something unrelated, and mentioned he had been feeling a little tired and achy. The doc tested him, and sure enough he had it. That was it. He felt a little off for awhile, not even as bad as a cold, and then he got better.

I realize that for a small portion of people, this thing is very dangerous and deadly. But holding the entire population hostage is utterly unfair.

Just Curious May 12, 2020 - 4:45 PM - 4:45 PM

I’m just curious how many deaths do you think California would have had if they did nothing at all about the Coronavirus? In other words left everything open, schools, businesses, Bart, bridge toll takers, hotels, concerts, sports etc.

Anonymous May 12, 2020 - 6:55 PM - 6:55 PM

I believe the answer is they would be the same. The argument for mitigation is it spreads these deaths over time so as not to overwhelm the health care system to the point they have no beds for people with common health problems like broken bones and heart attacks.

As it turned out, the estimates were off by orders of magnitude.

In the movie Contagion (2011), there’s a scene where CDC officials are talking about how they “don’t want another SARS,” which is in reference to how the CDC vastly overestimated the affects of SARS and as a result, lost credibility with the American people.

Life imitating art?

If there is any long-term benefit to this crisis it’s that people will hopefully start to consider who they vote for for sheriff/CoP, mayors and city councilmen and may even make the top public health official an elected office. There are good and bad points to the latter, of course.

Wage Slave May 12, 2020 - 7:05 PM - 7:05 PM

No one knows. Even the modelers, with all their data and algorithms, come up with numbers that are orders of magnitude apart from each other at times.

However, logic tells me that the total numbers will be pretty close to each other, barring an overrun of the medical system, because this thing ain’t going away without herd immunity or a vaccine. It just would have happened in a shorter amount of time without the lockdown.

chuckie the troll May 12, 2020 - 8:58 PM - 8:58 PM

Probably fewer deaths from cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, etc… all of which have not been diagnosed in the past 6-8 weeks. People cited for driving over 100 mph increased about 90 percent. And those drunk driving accidents at 10am we’ve read about?

Xi coronavirus is ubiquitous to the environment at this point. We have better info on how to treat patients. I’m willing to be one of the people living life, going to the store, restaurant, vacations and possibly getting it, so that it will be safe for the small minority (including my mother) who really should shelter in place.

Gittyup May 12, 2020 - 5:52 PM - 5:52 PM

Forcing rental property owners to absorb the cost of not collecting rent for this length of time is clearly a move toward socialist principles dictating government takeover of private property

Ozzie May 12, 2020 - 6:51 PM - 6:51 PM

Mortgage payments were moved to the end of the loan.

The Fearless Spectator May 12, 2020 - 6:54 PM - 6:54 PM

Well, for our elected officials people who own investment property are evil. They seem to applaud those squatters in Oakland as if it’s some sort of legitimate business model to take things that don’t belong to you.

Some years ago I had a friend who owned 40 houses in the Bay Area, obviously with significant leverage. His model was this: Create rent to own contracts with tenants. They end up taking great care of the place they will eventually own, and a portion of each months rent went toward creating equity for them. After a few years he would formally sell them the house and then go buy another. This is capitalism at its best. A win win for both parties. I wish our elected official could see the merit of such arrangements. But unfortunately they are thick and ordinary.

janus May 12, 2020 - 11:37 PM - 11:37 PM

@ Ozzie

Great so the payment the owner cannot make, is finances with compounding interest over the life of the loan, maybe up to 30 years.

Can I loan you some money with the same terms? Pretty please!

They will never get people to comply with this extension. Everyone already at the end of their rope as it is. I wish the counties would move more toward teaching residents how to live their lives with this virus as safely as possible rather than hold on to this fantasy that everyone is going to SIP another 2-3 months. Start focusing on teaching people the right away to go about seeing a small group of friends and family, of shopping or dining, keep big events cancelled. I have been supportive of the SIP and believe it has saved lives but I personally am at my limit and so are my children.

Democrats shut down LA and other blue counties.
Newsom asks for $3 trillion to help people who are not working in LA and other blue counties.
Economy tanks, Democrats blame it on Trump and hope voters are dense enough to believe them.
Democrats win.
American suffer for decades.
Poor Zoomers pay the bill.
If this is their plan we should bring back the guillotine.

You’re gonna see a lot of civil ( or not so civil) disobedience if they actually try to drag it through July in LA. Angelenos are not so obedient as the Bay Area, for better and for worse. This better have been just one person trying to manage expectations. LA is going to see widespread civil unrest if they try to go through summer like this.

RW May 12, 2020 - 10:17 PM - 10:17 PM

I think we need to open up our businesses and go back to work. They can’t arrest all of us. Very curious that they are letting prisoners out of jail, but if you want to stand for freedom and make a living for your family, they want to arrest you. Protect your liberties because our Governor is stepping all over the Constitution.

ChuckStir May 13, 2020 - 7:32 AM - 7:32 AM

They don’t realized the more you suppress people the more they will react out of anger, example, protest without mask and not following social distancing. If one stops and thinks about it, the Governors that impose these restrictions, not just Newsom are making things worse. Apparently Newsom and other Governors are not that bright. Let people get on with their lives. Reasonable recommendations, I.E., mask and social distance. Let businesses run with reasonable guidelines.

Michael1 May 13, 2020 - 8:11 AM - 8:11 AM

All the stores , restaurants and businesses should open up now . Make sure they enforce that everyone wears a mask or they can’t come in .Hand sanitizer everywhere . There is nothing the government can do about it .This is America ,the people are IN charge not our corrupt politicians .All the people that want to stay locked up in their homes have the freedom do so . We followed there orders for 2 months and obviously they are going to keep extending it as long as the people will take it . Get out and live again . Be safe , be smart and protect the most vulnerable .Remember the government is powerless except for the power the people give it !

Gittyup May 13, 2020 - 8:26 AM - 8:26 AM

As far as I can tell, the medical professionals don’t have enough to do so they sit around making up new diseases to keep themselves in business. With the power of suggestion being such a strong factor, it seems to be working.
