Contra Costa County Urges Schools To Host Virtual Online Graduation Celebrations

As the end of the school-year approaches, health officials in Contra Costa County are urging schools to host virtual graduation ceremonies online instead of in-person celebrations in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“We recognize the need for people to connect and celebrate,” said Dr. Chris Farnitano, Contra Costa County’s health officer. “However, gatherings like graduation ceremonies are a major contributor to the spread of COVID-19.”

For schools who are unable to hold virtual graduations, Contra Costa Health Services has issued guidance on how to hold in-person ceremonies safely.

One option is a drive-through ceremony where students can pick up their diplomas with their parents and siblings in the car (up to six people). One family at a time will be allowed to approach a graduation table/station where their student would receive a diploma. Attendees would need to wear masks or face coverings.

Another option recommended by health officials involves a small group of 25 students or fewer. In this scenario, students would wear masks, stay six feet apart and practice social distancing. This ceremony would not include the parents/caregivers of the students or their extended families, but it could be filmed for them to view at a later time.

Have the graduating classes graduate normally but do 25% at a time. This way it will satisfy the fear of closeness and being infected and the graduates will at least be able to “walk” with part of their classmates. It will take all day, but so what. Do it at their high school.

Virtual summer, virtual sports, virtual vacations, virtual jobs and pretty soon virtual food. And as for the U.S. Constitution? It’s only as good as the worst tyrant running our county and state. Well, this will be something that the Class of 2020 will look back on with…?

Let the kids gather in mass like usual and let the families and friends watch at home on the TV. If they want to wear masks wear masks. Masks are keeping health care workers safe and they are dealing with the infected. If masks didn’t work there wouldn’t be a healthcare worker alive today.

Newsom and his aunt pelosi should be forfeiting their paychecks until this fiasco is lifted and they reopen our state.

Their to busy buying stocks when they cause the market to dip. Knowing exactly what stocks to buy and sell based on what orders the plan to give. They will never give up anything..you have to take it from them

Masks work in the healthcare system because they change them out regularly and they change their gloves all the time. They are trained not to cross contaminate. And they use the proper mask for the job. We are using homemade masks, or reissuing N95 masks if we’re lucky enough to have them, and putting them in our cars or in our purses between use. There is literally no point.

It matters to most of them now, but years down the road it will be a good story when you run into one of your old classmates. I think my graduation mattered when i was 18, but now, meh.

Concord Mom May 12, 2020 - 6:50 PM - 6:50 PM

Concord pavillion should lend their parking lot to car graduations. Families with grad can be spaced apart, the presenter can be up front on a big screen. When a name is called out, they can stand on top of their car and honk.

Sam May 12, 2020 - 7:40 PM - 7:40 PM

Right special treatment for you..as long as we all shut up and wear our damn masks. Who cares about a graduation? Your putting lives at risk. Stay home, stay safe. Life will never be the same and don’t bother getting creative. It’s not about a virus

Old Fart May 13, 2020 - 7:34 AM - 7:34 AM

@Concord Mom. I like it. Way to make lemonade out of lemons. If it was done drive-in movie style, there could be a giant screen with the camera pointed at the car that had driven up to receive their diploma. Yeah, the poor kids would have shabby cars and the rich kids would be showing off, but that’s life. While the whole thing would technically suck, Class of 2020 would definitely have the most memorable graduation of anybody.

Some schools are actually using the Drive-In Movie Theater with the students faces flashed on the screen. They drive around in their cars and then park. Bonus: And they don’t have to sit in the heat and listen to the boring usually self serving, politically infused speeches.
