QUESTION: Gov. Gavin Newsom recently said barber shops and hair salons might be closed until August or September. Do you think they should be allowed to open right now if everyone wears masks?

Talk about it….

Sure, why not? Go if Ya’ want, Don’t go if Ya want…..

I don’t think they should open now, they only have one chair per employee so this means that if some has the covy 19 and on the chair his sitting on is gona leave the germs for the next customer, those barbers they don’t wipe if the chair with some hand soap or just to remove the germs,so no stays close,,

That’s it. Let them eat cake.

You don’t think someone left germs on that orange they picked up and put back on the grocery shelf?? I saw a lady in Lucky’s about 3 weeks ago, pick up a bunch of celery and seriously pick and choose the stalks she wanted to keep and put the rest back after handling it all with no gloves. Suck on that one for a moment or two.

SALONS WILL WIPE DOWN AND DISINEFECT EVERYTHING TO BE ABLE TO OPEN AND GET BACK TO WORK. OTHERWISE, TAXPAYERS ARE PAYING THEM TO BE CLOSED UNTIL AUGUST OR SEPT. Now suck on that one for a moment.

LET THEM OPEN AND GET BACK TO WORK. People who don’t want to obtain those services can stay home!

Yes. All small businesses should be allowed to open. Standard precautions could be taken as we reintroduce our immune systems back from protected environments. We may see a spike, but better now before our natural immune system is allowed to languish in an abnormal “clean” environment.

Persons at risk could stay home.

YES!! I trust my hairdresser to do the right thing.

Of course they should open up. Temps taken by customers AND cutters; gloves, masks, and there you go. Use all precautions and make some money at the same time. Open up!!!

Call or email your County Supes or Mayors office to have your thoughts heard.

No way, keep it closed to risky now. It will never work out to reopen the salon until vaccine are available and/or viruses dies by it self.

you have a fundamental misunderstanding of virology. The ONLY way a virus dies by itself is if there are no longer any hosts that don’t have antibodies against it. That is accomplished by ‘herd immunity’, meaning the whole herd has had it and has antibodies. Hiding in your house does nothing towards getting to herd immunity, you’re just fresh meat keeping yourself warm and ready for the virus to find and attack you.

So, either you hide in your home for a year or so until the vaccine is ready, or you get out there and take the bullet for the rest of us. Most don’t even know they’ve had it, but let’s literally destroy our economy and the careers of 20 million people so that you don’t get the sniffles.

Do you really think that the virus will be eradicated? It won’t and it will mutate just like all viruses in the history of mankind. Are you really going to stay inside for the rest of your life waiting on a cure? I like most people need to go earn money to survive and certainly don’t want or expect somebody else to take care of me. Life is a risk every time you step out your door and remember that in Contra Costa County there are currently 29 total deaths and they are attributed to seniors. Go ahead and stay in if you like but most of us don’t have that luxury or want to be taken care of.

That’s nice, Pat. You’re welcome to shut yourself in for the rest of your life if you please.

Yes open now immediately

Yes, and Gyms too

Oh my goodness. Everything should be open now. Wash your hands, don’t pick your nose. Carry on.

Absolutely. A haircut is something all men and women need. Just like going to the grocery store.

Clearly not as essential as golf courses and nurseries
Keep them closed. Make the people suffer.

“Newsom is allowing some businesses, such as clothing stores, florists, bookstores and sporting goods shops to open their doors for the first time in nearly two months, with some restrictions. The governor has said the order detailed Thursday won’t include other close-contact businesses, such as dine-in restaurants and hair salons.”

I DON’T SEE HOW A HAIR SALON is any different than those listed above. A hair salon worker has their own chair, can wear masks and gloves, and sanitize after each client. Just like the grocery store, target, home depot. There are less bodies in a hair salon that Safeway! Way to stick it to the local businesses while keeping the corporations strong.

I agree. Costco has been open the whole time. It has been a wreck for more than a month. Cases of food ripped into, frantic hoarders panting and jockeying for firsties. Bumper car parking … Okay I might be exaggerating. I needed a little comic relief. 😉

With proper attention to infection control and limited number of customers at a time to allow for social distancing, masks and gloves on barbers and hairdressers, and masks on customers — it seems just as plausible as grocery shopping, if not more so, since hygiene is really their primary focus anyway.

I better take my temperature; I actually agree with Gittyup.

Don’t care either way…my wife cuts my hair…what little I have left.

No.

Open everything. If you”re a person at risk stay home. When out be smart. Wear masks. If you have any symptoms stay home. Don’t be a sh** disturber.

Newsom’s hair looks the same, so bet his barber has been cutting his hair. He would look like a slicked down greasy mop top by September if he didn’t. Most likely, his wife and kids getting haircuts, too.

My first thought exactly. If he or his wife had to wait that long the hair salons would be on the open now list, if not last month… Kids can do without but not the adults.

The salons do more than just cut/style hair. Lots of seniors and others cannot cut their own toenails. Some can’t do even their fingernails. And they can’t go to a doctor to have that done yet either.

Haven’t been to a barber in years, I use a wash cloth

No wax to polish?

Wax+ Polish = Chrome Dome

Not only barber shops and hair salons, every business should be allowed to open. A lot of business owners have more bills to pay than most non business owners. They not only have their rent or mortgage and other household bills, they also have to pay the rent and insurance on their business. In some cases like the restaurant business they have an inventory that’s gone bad.
It’s causing a domino effect, employees are let go, and suppliers are losing business. When suppliers lose business, they have to let their employees go. Then the manufactures lose business and you guessed it, their employees are let go. There’s also the trucking and shipping industry that is losing business, then gas and diesel sales drop.
If so-called essential businesses can be open without too much of a problem, then every business should be open.
One of the biggest problems I have with this COVID-19 is that for such a novel virus that they don’t know too much about and are learning more everyday, they sure seem to think they know a lot about it. Now it seems that everybody with a with a couple of letters after their name is an expert and are given way too much power over us. They know what’s best for us and we are not suppose to question them, just shut up and do as they say or risk arrest.

Well Dawg , we do know the virus is super contagious and even with seven weeks of serious distancing we have had over 76,000 people in the US die. The Italians have had over 100 doctors die. This virus is something worth fearing.

@ Anonymous
You need to look at the numbers for the flu that went around while Obama was in office. Then tell me about the number of deaths in the US because of corona vd. We lose that many people from the flu every year and nothing is said. A virus is a virus. There will not be a cure for a virus. You have to let your immune system take care of it. If you are immune challenged, then stay in the house and protect your self. But, don’t make everyone else do what they don’t need to do.

I fear being homeless, hungry and unemployed.

People have at least a 97.6% change of surviving COVID-19, and that percentage will only go up with a larger denominator (more testing), while the projected NATIONAL unemployment rate will be 32% if this “shelter in place” stay in effect.

Now look at 10 of your friends and family. 3 will be unemployed and remember they will be looking at you too so you might be one of the 3.

My wife is a Kaiser Permanente employee. WC Kaiser has begun to “furlough” employees which is a fancy way of saying laying them off…………. Let that sink in.

With proper measures in place, I’d wager salons would be safer than most businesses/service centers.

Masks, gloves, wipe down the chair and all surfaces after each customer, appointment only.

Hey, that sounds exactly like what the Dallas salon owner was doing.

I also cant measure why dental practices cant take routine appointments.

Mine wears full PPE coverings.

GAVIN LOVES YELLOW TARTAR…His first partner is covered in it

Seeing my nails for the first time in 50 years is not a pretty sight; however, I don’t know how my manicurist could “do” them from six-feet away.

BTW: A manicurist in the South was just eaten by an alligator while making a house call.

Note to self: Don’t pet the alligators.

#alligatorslivesmatter

It was reported her last words were “I guess I won’t do that again”.

Is it legal to refuse service to reptilian customers?

Yes, they should be allowed to open. If you are afraid, then don’t go. Very simple.

Yes because both the client and technician would be subjected to risks under their agreed upon control. Each would know the odds of either being infected. I would prefer those waiting for service wait outside. I personally would be extra careful because I have 3 strikes against me.

Yes,
Everything should be opened up with whatever safety precautions they can use.

Yes and for gosh sakes open Waxing places. We need our Brazilians

No!
Don’t change immigration laws, let Americans do the work.

Thanks for the laugh! 🤣

Do Brazilians have 6 foot long arms?

I am sure we can work out 6 feet from my face .

How about we reopen them, with precautions, and then allow customers to decide if they should take the risk? Barbers and hairdressers cannot live indefinitly without income. And when you do eventually go get your hair done, please tip generously.

That sounds way to American, I don’t think our county can handle that

Have to agree with you. But it makes too much sense, so forget about it.

Yes, open them up and everything else, too. We’re adults and can take precautions we feel are necessary. So can vendors. I’m tired of Daddy Newsom telling me what I can and can’t do. I have a brain and know how to use it.

I feel the same way about having to wear a seatbelt, having airbags and crumple zones in my cars, being told what I cannot put in my body, how fast I can drive, having to stop at red lights, etc… Open everything up and let everyone decide everything on their own.

We all have brains – just let us use them – what could possibly go wrong.

Or what can be removed from your body. Let us do what we want to our bodies. It’s our right.

Yes. Open up everything.

I cut and color my own hair, do my own nails. Easy Breezy, Anyone can learn off Youtube.

Barbie,

I am so happy for you that you are able to do that kind of stuff for yourself. Way to go. However, not everybody is as fortunate as you. Some people are physically handicapped, and are physically unable to do such things for themselves. Others, such as senior citizens, lack the physical strength or coordination.

Hairstylist and barbers exist for more than just the fact that people are too lazy to do stuff for themselves…

Give me a haircut or give me Xi coronavirus! My hair hasn’t been THIS long since the 80’s.

I got my hair cut last on the evening before the Abide in your Abode order went into effect. I’m willing to risk it to get a trim if a place is willing to open. Otherwise the dog clipper is starting to look inviting.

Everything can open up now! This is getting beyond annoying. The longer you wait to open up businesses the more businesses are going to go under. Why would the governor want the economy to tank even more then it already has? But glad its ok for Jamba Juice to be open but I can’t get a haircut. Newsom makes no sense!

Because that’s what they want. To completely choke out small business.

It seems to me the governor and the rest of the Dems want the economy to go bad so they can blame Trump, thinking it will help them in November.

Exactly!

Open them. Cut the capacity by half if the government feels the need to interfere. Have the stylist (salon/barber) wear a mask. Have the customer wear one until you get around the ears. Clean the seat off when the customer leaves.

Let the businesses open! If you would rather hide under your bed in your house, continue to do so. If you want to go out, get some sun …DO SO!

But of course, our infamous governor said the first community spread was in a nail salon … but provided zero information and nothing else. Wish we could see some more information on that … but doubt we will.

Cutting capacity restricts someone’s right to make a living. Taking away their.”rights”. ”You can’t have it both ways.

How about we cut the number of politicians in half also.

It’s called a compromise, Ozzie. No surprise that you wouldn’t know anything about it.

From the Lancet. It has become clear that a hard lockdown does not protect old and frail people living in care homes—a population the lockdown was designed to protect.3 Neither does it decrease mortality from COVID-19, which is evident when comparing the UK’s experience with that of other European countries.

The difference between retail and hair care services is that a barber will be in closer proximity to clients for 10-20 minutes per person. A retail sales person can distance themselves, a cash register clerk can distance themselves, and average retail interactions per customer aren’t as long.

Maybe it could be safer if barbers use N100 masks or if haircuts are done outside. It might take a little longer to work out the logistics on how to offer hair service in a safer manner..

The workers will assess the risks and decide for themselves if they feel safe working, and the customers will do the same and decide if they feel safe patronizing the business. Just because things are opening up doesn’t mean we’re going to put guns to people’s heads and force them to go outside. People are welcome to shut themselves in for all of eternity if that’s what they want to do.

Driving home saw For Lease sign in window of hair salon.

I listened to Newsom today.

This guy rambles worse than a Rambler out of alignment.

He’s made it clear that he’s in charge and that there is no power other than his own.

He’s willing to force people obey him without question.

He’ll never relinquish his new powers of us people.

As I’ve said all along, once freedoms are gone, they are never given back.

He also has a $54 Billion deficit on his hands. That will put him on his knees requesting Federal funds. Worse yet, the President has made it clear sanctuary states go to the end of the money line, legal or not.

Our Governor will be faced with difficult choices very shortly. I hope he chooses well.

Well if I’ve learned anything the last two months, it’s that life is short and you really can’t spend too much of it arguing with strangers on the Internet. 😉

I don’t know, but I’m glad it’s not my responsibility to decide.

Open everything up! This is ridiculous. Newsom needs to be recalled.

Why not. Wear a mask. Issue solved. These hairdressers need to go back to work. Need to start making a living. This is ridiculous. Don’t go if you’re paranoid. Simple.

YES it’s OK for him to have his hair done. Open up let’s go.

You do realize that hair stylists actually have Training in sanitizing and sterilization more then the grocery and hardware stores you go to. The requirements for them to return is dramatically going to hurt their business. You may not feel like it’s important but it is to the people that have built their business and are watching it go away. Nobody should be losing their lively hood at this point. Take proper precautions, if you feel it’s not right for you then so be it..

YOU may decide that you trust that your barber is safe but people who are asymptomatic can pass on the virus. If you live alone and can quarantine yourself for 14 days after the vanity trip, then OK. BUT, I have a feeling that people who feel they need a haircut are not the people who will go straight home to an empty house where they cannot expose anyone else.

after reading all the responses, and the logic behind them…. i have changed my opinion. open it all up, you all deserve what you get. something tells me it will be more than haircut.

Lol for a disease that has a death rate that’s likely much lower than 1%, and with half or more of those deaths occurring in nursing homes, I think you are the one who is a little misguided.

A lot of new 80s hair bands are going to make a big comeback ! Long Hair is back in ! long live Rock n Roll ! Geico say,s so.

Cellophane, Newsom sounds just like Trump, sure he isn’t Republican?

Hell yes! Absolute bs that numerous business are being crushed by a few brown shirts! It’s pathetic that so many do not challenge and remain complicit with this shutdown, regardless if you wear the same stripes of your dear comrades. We’ve had few cases here comparatively, hospitals are well equipped to handle cases. Quarantine the elderly, immune compromised, wear masks and wash your damn hands!

UNREAL!! Salons, by nature, are sanitary; every tool is cleaned before the next customer. My cousin owns a salon and there are 3 or 4 chairs that are over 6 feet apart. The next customer can wait outside until the last customer has left. THERE IS NO F’ING REASON AT ALL FOR NOT OPENING SALONS. YOU ARE MORE AT RISK AT THE GROCERY STORE FOR GODS SAKE!!!!!

And, let me guess….. actually, I don’t need to guess…. I KNOW GAVIN & his wife have someone coming to their home for hair and nail services. You know he’s not getting on TV without his stylist by his side!!!

Open!!!!

Looks like every store will need a sign, reading:
“Those who shop here do so at Their own risk”

Yes! People are aware of the risks and ways to mitigate it by now. The nanny state needs to stop. People can make their own decisions based on their own circumstances, risk/reward determinations, etc.

Yes, open the barber shops, my recent first attempt at cutting my own hair left much to be desired. Hope I don’t have to try that again.

I bet these rules don’t apply to Gav! He’s always sporting a finely coiffed do.

OPEN, OPEN, OPEN!!!

I think all indoor establishments should remain closed until there are no more new cases in Contra Costa. I don’t mind waiting until the end of May to see what happens. Get imaginative–I have been using my doggie grooming tools; nail drill to shorten my gel nails and clippers for trimming hair tips. It’s not like we have anyone to impress at this point!
