DMV Extends All Expiring Driver Licenses

The California Department of Motor Vehicles is extending driver licenses expiring during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Licenses for drivers younger than 70 that expire between March and May 2020 are now valid through May 31, 2020.

All commercial driver licenses, endorsements and certificates expiring between March and June 2020 are now valid through June 30, 2020, aligning with a recent emergency declaration from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The extension does not include medical certificates for commercial drivers, which requires additional administrative actions scheduled in the near future.

The DMV continues to review and process online renewals, and encourages drivers who are eligible to renew their license online to do so.

The extensions require no individual action on the part of drivers.

Drivers age 70 and older with expiring noncommercial licenses are receiving an extension in the mail automatically.

How about the expiration date forbgetting a Smart Cars?

Did I miss something? Are we required to get Smart cars now?

I wonder about just the I/D. Card if that will extend the expiration. I need to get a new REAL ID I am still on the old type of ID

@Concordejet

The deadline for needing a Real ID has been extended to October 2021 due to the pandemic. The DMV website has more info on changes to DL and ID expirations and renewals.

Thank you, .I needed that info too.

Did you make an error. You wrote drivers younger than 20 whose licenses expire in May 2020 are now valid through May 31, 2020. Just doesn’t make sense?

When will DMV open for road tests my daughter has an appointment on May 1, It has not been canceled yet.

My mother’s license is expiring in July. If it’s automatically renewed for 70 and older, I know she’ll be extremely happy.

Not sure how long they’ll keep doing that.

I’m over 70 and got a 3 month extension. Can not automatically renew. Still need to take the written exam.

What if u need to retake the test over to get my license? Do i still have to wait till this pandemic stuff is over with?

What about registration and smog check? I don’t feel like going to a shop right now.
