BART Ridership Down Nearly 90 Percent

BART’s ridership losses remained mostly steady last week as the agency plans to roll out reduced service hours Monday and until further notice amid the Bay Area’s shelter-in-place order due to the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Ridership throughout the BART system was down between 87 percent and 89 percent from Tuesday to Sunday when compared to average ridership in February.

BART officials estimate the ridership and fare revenue losses and reduced economic activity during the shelter-in-place order could cost the agency $57 million each month.

Starting Monday, weekday BART service will reduce from 5 a.m. to midnight to 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Service on Saturdays and Sundays will also reduce from 6 a.m. to midnight Saturday and 8 a.m. to midnight Sunday to 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on both days. Train frequency is not expected to change, according to the agency.

BART staff are working to update the agency’s Trip Planner tool to reflect the new service schedule, with canceled trains crossed out in red.

The agency will also indicate transit alternatives on the Trip Planner.

BART officials continue to work with local, state and federal officials to secure funding support to shore up the agency’s revenue losses during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

Do like British Rail, health care workers and other essential people ride free for the duration.

Maybe BART will go bankrupt and then the union contracts could be renegotiated.

If you haven’t noticed people don’t really want to work at BART anymore, the hiring pool is nothing what it used to be. lowering pay and benefits they will be just like cops, nobody wants the job anymore. Who wants to deal with the constant threat of being attacked or the crazy people and the lack of law and order. Are you signing up Jeff?

ConcordDad,

No one wants to be a cop any more because of the liberal Bay Area Politicians and their “reform” measures. You do realize that the state changed the shooting policy and Prop 47 just turns criminals loose. And the cameras and scrutiny, don’t get me started.

I was a reserve deputy sheriff for fourteen years, wouldn’t even consider doing it today in California. And BART is just about as bad as it has ever been. Bust their union!!!!!

ConcordDad-
Are you kidding! I have a relative who finally
got a job at BART after several years of waiting
and trying. It’s like hitting the job Lotto. Great
pay & benefits & talk about job security. What
other business can you name that has lost 90%
of its customers and still hasn’t had any layoffs.

I guess you never were in a union association.

Will BART lay people off?
Ha Ha Ha Ha

Never happen.

So non-working BART employees get full pay (thank you tax payers), and will also collect money paid to workers once Republicans are forced to give much less to big corporations and Trump’s hotels?
Lay off workers, BART. This isn’t the time to be wasting tax payer dollars.

A/C Transit is going No-Fare (no it’s not really free, cause taxpayers will get the bill) for the duration….

Where are the paycuts and layoffs? That’s how reality works.

reality only works in the private sector; don’t worry, your tax $ will cover it…

yeah really
they are complaining because they wont get their monthly bonus checks
that tax payers foot the bill for

employees they cant lay off or the bart unions will riot ….

they are getting what they deserve

karma bart

karma

I sure hope the state and fed don’t bend the knee to barf

or those politicians I am sure wont be re elected

Now will Bart appreciate their riders and keep trains clean, and take down the germ ridden leather straps and replace them with a more sanitary form of something to hold onto? Or will they punish the public and raise fares and parking fees again.

Oh BART’s not paying for anything, you can be sure of that.

Isn’t 10% number Bart used to describe the number of fare evaders?

So if that’s true, the only people riding Bart are evading the fare to get the ride.

LOL

All the trains should be automated. Drivers are not needed and everything can be done electronically.

That was the original idea. Just like Disneyland. Except what about a lost child or an electronic failure or the Jungle Boat ride sinks. Reality is that hat there are a lot of situations that computers can’t handle. Maybe you can think about the overwhelming success of self driving cars.

oh candy

we all know they will follow the water company and pge
on how to stick it to the customer for their own inadequate management
or lack there of

parking and fares will be increased as well as yet another dog and pony show to the politicians for more tax money or they strike

….claiming the democrat mantra of ….uhhh its unfair …boo hoo we had no riders ….we could not get our bonuses ….

newscum will bow before them as they are union and he will need the guaranteed union vote to keep his cushy seat Pelosi gave him

expect higher taxes and underperforming barf management

same old story …….

Good. Best news I’ve heard since this virus started. Close this liberal mismanaged hell hole down. Social justice idiots do not belong on the board of directors for any legitimate business. Their ideologies are much much more important than the safety of hardworking people just trying to get to their jobs.

They should reduce the number and frequency of trains but still provide service until mid-night. Some people still have to work a late shift and need a way home.

There are many hospital workers who need BART to get to night shift positions. I guess they have to go early now, losing out on precious sleep!
