UPDATE: BART Ridership Down 70%

BART ridership continued to fall Monday as the Bay Area braced for a shelter-in-place order to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The agency tallied 118,572 riders Monday, a 70 percent drop from ridership on an average Monday in February, which was 399,397. BART ridership was also down 61 percent on Saturday and Sunday compared to an average
weekend day from the previous month.

The agency will continue running its regular schedule to ensure essential workers can still commute to their jobs during the three-week shelter-in-place order that went into effect Tuesday.

I’m sure the responsible people are staying away and the standard gate jumpers are in full enjoyment of empty trains …

All those liberal things we are supposed to do now prove to be dangerous.
Use public transit
Use plastic reusable shopping bags
Use reusable metal straws
Use reusable drinking cups
Reside in high density housing

Amazing, isnt it?

The level of stupidity amazes me. I’m not saying whose.

I’m no liberal by any definition, these are just intelligent things. Put millions of pounds of plastic in the ocean, it dies. Put millions of cars on the road they can’t move, need trains or busses. How is this liberal lol

That photo belongs in the Claycord online museum!

I noticed that as well. Definitely an earlier vintage car.

Look how nice Bart was in the past. Carpeting on the floor, soft comfortable seating. As compared to what Bart has become lately. This is a reflection of what our society has evolved into.

I don’t understand why they are continuing to run on their normal schedule instead of switching to the holiday schedule. If someone is using the train to commute, there would still be a train every 20 minutes so they could plan accordingly. Guess they figure they can always get more money from the taxpayers later to cover their losses.

Running normal train schedule would result in more crowded cars. It would be a bad idea

be ready for increased fares

just as the water company did after we all conserved as they instructed
and pge did after their down service

ahhh sanctuary………….

Time to convert the “ambassadors” into custodian and wipe the trains down since their intended purpose has been thwarted by the decrease in ridership. You know Bart is gonna raise fares to make up for this ☹️

How many employees are being “let go”? I bet 0. They get paid regardless of ridership, regardless of income, regardless of anything. They even get a bonus for increased ridership, even though they still get half their income from the taxpayers. I understand that BART helps the traffic, but totally mis-managed operation.

I love people that sit safely home on their computer and bash front line employees. BART management and the Board of Directors make horrible decisions constantly. But the front line workers are just forced to deal with it. Like fare evasion, we can’t do a thing about it. We are told not do get involved it’s a BART police issue and management disciplines them if they do anything, it’s the most insane thing I’ve ever seen. Wonder why you see an Agent with their head down? Would you want to watch people stealing from your employer and tax payers? We are out here getting exposed to who knows what and BART brought us some wipes which honestly are made of “Natural” ingredients so I’m sure those are helpful. We have had zero help and are still showing up to work everyday. We are endangering our kids and families by going to work everyday. If it’s not bad enough these days worrying about being beaten up or worse now we have to worry about everyone coughing on us or worse. Two employees are already positive for Corona but we are horrible people right? I’ll remember that when I leave my kids to go to work and get who knows what, it’s a scary thought when you are a single mom!

@BART employee… You are on the front line, and for that I THANK YOU.
And please take the matter of – your employer BART who is not adequately protecting you to the news media. Media like TV news journalist who can broadcast this lack of care story may help. I bet Bart will then kick it into high gear.

BART and PGE should be taken over by a different agency that is dependable and honest with no conflict of interest involvement. No stock holders.

Maybe some of the overpriced and useless directors will forfeit their salaries and perks to keep it running.

What a switch to have the BART trains clean and without the dregs of society riding it all day long as hotel BART without any repercussions. Well the fare evaders will have to find another law to break during the shelter in place.

Fat chance.
