Walnut Creek planning commissioners on Thursday will host a public hearing on a proposed three-building mixed commercial/residential project on Mount Diablo Blvd.

The overall project, called 1532 Mount Diablo Blvd., would be on three-quarters of an acre at the intersection of Mt. Diablo and Locust Street.

The proposed two-phase project consists of three buildings, 42 residential condominium units, approximately 22,400 square feet of commercial space, rooftop dining and two levels of subterranean parking.

The first phase would be a four-story building with approximately 10,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, 30 multifamily residential condominium units on the second, third and fourth floors and two levels of underground parking with 36 total stalls. That building would be on the easterly parcel.

The second phase, bordering both Mt. Diablo and Locust, would be two buildings – a stand-alone two-story, 9,064-square-foot commercial building – and a four-story building with 7,161 square feet of ground-floor retail and 12 market-rate, multifamily residential condominium units on floors two, three and four. The two buildings would be separated by a 10-foot-wide public walkway.

Thursday’s hearing is billed as a study session about the 1532 Mount Diablo project, with public comment, discussion and providing feedback to the developer.

I just hope the units stay as Condo’s vs. Apartments as I like the idea of keeping home ownership in the city high. Not to mention I think there are an increasing number of people who would like to stay in Walnut Creek, but downsize to something close to the vibrancy of downtown.

Luckily we’re moving from that block to So. Broadway.

Residential units should not be allowed in the heart of downtown. They’ll complain about parking, traffic, and noise from commercial activities.

Downtown Walnut Creek has a serious parking problem AND retail problem. Has anyone noticed the amount of open retail space? These spaces have been vacant for months. Also, the number of gyms, cycling, and exercise type establishments are all over downtown Walnut Creek. With the economy in the state it is, there is will more open retail and gym space soon.
Do you really think this development is a good idea? Who wants more vacant space, expensive condo/apartments, un-leaseable space …?

The city only cares about revenue. They could care less about the need to keep the integrity of the city’s needs. I have noticed the empty restaurants that could no longer pay the leases. Very very sad.
