Five New Coronavirus Cases Confirmed In Contra Costa County

Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) has confirmed five new cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in residents of the county.

Four are being treated at hospitals in Contra Costa. They had no travel history outside the U.S. or known contact with a confirmed case.

The fifth patient, who had close contact with another person who previously tested positive for COVID-19, is isolating at home under the guidance of CCHS.

As of Sunday morning, Contra Costa has nine confirmed cases of novel coronavirus. One patient who tested positive last week remains in a local hospital, while three other previously identified patients who tested positive are also isolating at home.

“The coronavirus is here in our community. As we ramp up our testing, we expect to identify more cases. But there is still a lot we can do to slow down the spread and protect our most vulnerable,” said Dr. Ori Tzvieli, acting Contra Costa Health Officer.

Last week, CCHS released recommendations for people who are at higher risk of serious illness from COVID-19. Practicing good public health hygiene remains the best way of avoiding any respiratory disease, including novel coronavirus:

• People who are sick should stay home from work or school until they are well
• Older adults and people with chronic conditions should avoid large gatherings, as they are at higher risk of becoming infected
• Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
• Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water is not available
• People who are sick should cover their coughs and sneezes using a tissue or their elbow
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with your unwashed hands
• Masks are for sick people. There is no evidence that wearing masks in public prevents healthy people from getting sick with novel coronavirus

close everything public and private, call out the guard, clear the streets, no business or commerce, no publuc meetings, no school… hide hide the end is near! oh… and use your TP wisely and sparingly.

Don’t leave out that you should douse yourself in Purell or Titos handmade vodka every 6 hours.
I think the best advise I have heard is……..
to wear my seatbelt

Eastbay Babe March 8, 2020 - 5:09 PM - 5:09 PM

ROFL Why are people fighting over TP? Crazy.

Aunt Barbara March 8, 2020 - 5:23 PM - 5:23 PM

The media is having a field day terrorizing everyone and kids are selling hand sanitizer on the streets like lemonade….

qwerty March 8, 2020 - 4:21 PM - 4:21 PM

It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine.

I don’t think the media is terrorizing everyone, I think for the most part they are reporting the facts, there are much we don’t know about this virus, don’t panic, but don’t be to nonchalant about it either.

How many people crying out that “the sky is falling” bothered to get the flu shot this year? The regular old flu kills over 10,000 people in the U.S. each year And like corona virus, people who are old or have ‘compromised immune systems’ are much more likely to have complications.

The reality is that this virus will most likely spread throughout the world and then go the way of SARS, Swine Flu, Y2K, and every other world-ending crisis the media trumpets out to boost ratings.

Exactly!

DaveFromCAinGA March 9, 2020 - 5:16 AM - 5:16 AM

Last number I saw from the CDC for flu deaths this season was around 14,000 nation wide. My +70year old boss recovered from “laryngitis” that appeared very Corona like including coughing up blood. Take precautions: wash hands, don’t touch your nose, mouth, eyes, use Lysol on surfaces and packages. Stay healthy.

lovelace March 8, 2020 - 4:53 PM - 4:53 PM

Ok I confess.
have opened my emergency stash of wooden stakes, silver crosses and bullets, I am ready.

You’re hosed. You forgot the garlic.

The Fearless Spectator March 8, 2020 - 5:18 PM - 5:18 PM

Televangelist Jim Bakker just received a cease and desist order from the N.Y. Attorney General. It seems he made inferences that the “Silver Solution” he is selling may be of help with the Coronavirus.

It’s only $125 per bottle!

What an absolute disgrace. Apparently his eight years in prison did nothing: same scheme, new wife.

Candy March 10, 2020 - 4:24 AM - 4:24 AM

Good News !!! He continues to rip people off.

Cornfed March 8, 2020 - 5:28 PM - 5:28 PM

Contra Costa. That narrows it diwn.

anonamel March 8, 2020 - 5:34 PM - 5:34 PM

ok so where do I get hand sanitizer because I looked! can’t find aloe gel or 70 percent alcohol either. I’m doomed!

Candy March 9, 2020 - 11:18 AM - 11:18 AM

Scrub hands with soap and water using a small nail brush to get underneath fingernails. Wear gloves when in public places. Carry clorox wipes for surfaces and wipes for hands and face

To Do List March 8, 2020 - 5:35 PM - 5:35 PM

This is getting serious. On Monday I am going to Costco and buying all the TP and hand sanitizer I can get in my car.

Anonymous March 8, 2020 - 11:42 PM - 11:42 PM

Too late. My wife was at Costco in Concord before they opened Sunday morning and there was a long line of people waiting to get in. She said the crowd was tense and things were getting a little sporty. What the sporty folk didn’t realize is the hand sanitizer and TP was already sold out. People rushed in only to find the hand sanitizer and TP shelves bare. She was there for protein shakes and other items unrelated to the panicking hoarders, so we were cool.

SF oh March 9, 2020 - 9:13 AM - 9:13 AM

I went to Costco last week to pick-up the eyeglasses I ordered. When I tried to walk in – a guard said I had to get in line. I pointed out that I did not have a cart and I was only going to the optical department and then I was leaving. Nope – had to stand in line with a bunch of crazies waiting to get in and grab all the bottled water and TP they could get.

FBR March 8, 2020 - 5:48 PM - 5:48 PM

Masks work for sick people AND healthy people. Surgical type masks are used for medical procedures to prevent any sicknesses to be passed to the patient. The N95 type masks are used by healthy people to prevent FROM getting sick. There are TWO BASIC types of masks. I won’t even mention the CBRN type masks. I’m not sure where the county is getting their information from. If you sick and want to prevent others around you from getting sick then wear the surgical type mask. If you are healthy and don’t want to get sick then wear the N95 mask. If I didn’t have an N95 to wear, I would even cover my face with a bandana if that was the only protection available to me.

Most vodka is just not strong enough to use in place of the alcohol in the diy recipes online.

PESFG March 8, 2020 - 7:07 PM - 7:07 PM

My biggest question is “What would Obama or Hillary do!?”. As long as our liberal politicians and celebrities are fine, everything will be okay.

SF oh March 9, 2020 - 2:27 PM - 2:27 PM

Virus would’ve been out of control if Obama or Hillary were in charge. Dems want open borders. They would never have closed entry to the US to people from Wuhan. They also wouldn’t have taken temperatures of people entering the US from flights from China – or taken any other pro-active measures. That would be “racist” and they would be “profiling” people. Of course, they would have 24-hour germ patrols and a staff of medical professionals protecting their health at all times.

Quarantining at home just makes your family go out and spread it for you….

Captain Bebops March 9, 2020 - 9:31 AM - 9:31 AM

“Virus, Day of Remembrance” is a 1980 Japanese movie that is almost prophetic. Most of it is in English with American actors such as Glenn Ford, Henry Silva, Robert Vaughn and George Kennedy. It’s available on Tubi (free with ads) but you will want to turn on closed captions for the Japanese scenes unless you know Japanese.

Rod Barton March 9, 2020 - 11:29 AM - 11:29 AM

BART is partially to blame for the increase in coronavirus cases, and will be responsible for more of these cases. Travelers entering from two major international airports on both sides of the bay. Who knows what those travelers have been exposed to. Then they sneeze and cough into your faces because there is no room on bart and you have no way to keep away from the sick. BART should be passing out hand sanitizers and face masks instead of adding to the problems.

Ozzie March 9, 2020 - 12:19 PM - 12:19 PM

How about people taking responsibility for themselves. This is not BARTs responsibility.

Justifiable languor March 9, 2020 - 12:47 PM - 12:47 PM

Don’t forget homeless use BART as a bunk house. We have the perfect reason to round up homeless. These people are at risk. They are also a potential population to spread disease.

Sam Malone March 9, 2020 - 3:50 PM - 3:50 PM

Sarcasm:
Give the homeless jobs to clean all of the cruise ships-since come bright individual a while back of housing the homeless on the cruise ships-that way the homeless can earn their benefits instead of pan handling us to death and draining the system. They may even be able to be so immune to things that a vaccine can be developed with their help! Just saying.

Candy March 10, 2020 - 4:31 AM - 4:31 AM
