The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.
The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.
Today’s question:
Several Bay Area stores have reported running out of items, including water and medical supplies due to fears over the Coronavirus.
QUESTION: Do you think people are over-reacting, or do you think this is really something to worry about?
Talk about it.
People are definitely over-reacting. Take necessary precaution (for any disease) but you have a better chance of being struck by lightening.
Stores running out of toilet paper because someone bought three months worth is ridiculous.
What…?! Doesn’t everyone *always* have at least a three-month supply of toilet paper? LOL 🙂
I believe that the overreacting, or panic, that is causing people to hoard what they believe to be survival needs is revealing.
I believe it shows very clearly the people who follow the MSM like a religion and the people who have decided to no longer think for themselves.
If the media and government spent this much time and energy on Influenza, a lot more lives would be saved each year.
Simple precautions are all that’s necessary, so far.
Since I’m skeptical of any of the information and statistics coming from China, the Media or our government, I’m not sure if this is something to worry about or not. What I do worry about is society’s reaction. People are hoarding and panicking and stores are running out of supplies. This will give us some insight into what’s going to happen when the **** really hits the fan. Many of the items being stripped from store shelves are items people should have on hand anyway. Food, water, toilet paper, hygiene supplies, pet supplies etc. Do like the Mormons and prepare yourself for any type of disaster. If there really is going to be a highly dangerous pandemic then I think the last place you want to be is out shopping for depleted supplies with the masses.
stores ran out of hand sanitizer and wipes
Kills the natural flora on your skin…. not good for you anyways.
Yeah, and those anti-bacterial sanitizers and wipes don’t do much for a virus.
Definitely overreacting, but its due to the media hyping this up. This will primarily affect older individuals and individuals with underlying health issues(pulmonary, auto immune, etc). Many of the other countries with high death rates, have hid the #s from not only the rest of the world, but its own people. No precautions were taken. The US have a wayyyy different/more efficient health care system, and we are under different kind of leadership. Its always ok to keep extra water and first aid supplies, but people are going crazy…buying out stores. Its mania. Most people will not be affected, will not even know they have it , have a “cold”(subtle), or may get it and it will be like the flu and again, some of the weaker ones will die as with any disease. This isnt where everyone will get this and everyone will die. Time will tell/show.
They are the same people who still shake hands and never wash them.
The overuse of handsanitizer
will turn this into an antibiotic resistant
SUPER bug!
.
Ace Hardware (Contra Costa Blvd.) was out of masks on Saturday – dust masks, painters’ masks, N-95 masks and the rubber chemical masks with the replaceable filters.
not one, single mask left.
Don’t responsible households keep supplies on hand in case of an emergency, such as earthquake. If so, they shouldn’t need to run out now because there might be some restrictions placed on movement.
What I really don’t understand is the run on bottled water. Do they think they won’t be able to use their faucet?
Amen. [smh]
Why does anybody “buy” water?
I know people who keep very little food and essential items in the house, and also almost never plan meals. They go to stores frequently and buy on impulse. Fortunately I grew up in a different world. I’ve always kept about a dozen days worth of non-perishable, mostly canned food. Everything is dated and I occasionally rotate out (eat) the oldest stuff. The disaster most anticipated is a major earthquake. My cheaply built Hoffman house will likely collapse like a house of cards.
I think this is a huge overreaction, Just like the Ebola scare from a few years ago and Sars before that. We will be fine, people do die from the regular flu every year sad to say my best friend did 2 years ago. This too will blow over.
Recommendations and insight from Dr. Juliana Grant: https://www.julianagrant.com/blog/2020/2/29/coronavirus
People are seldom provisioned well enough to withstand a two-week period, and that’s just basic common sense. A gallon per person per day is the minimum for water storage, and most people don’t have enough batteries to power even basic emergency lighting for more than a few days. Nobody should be losing their minds over this, but people do need to make sure they’ve done some basic preparation.
I always keep 40 gallons of water in stock (it’s called a water heater – and owning a filter).
If the utilities take a dump we’re up crap creek…literally, as the sewage plants will be out of service too, LOL)
Masks do no good. How many times does someone have to be told. When is the last time there was a shortage of toilet paper? The water out of the faucet is great. People are like sheep. Must be the same people who go to midnight sales and get into a fight over some product they want to buy.
People were panicked by liberal media, liberal members of congress and state politicians. Some might call their rhetoric close to screaming fire in a crowded theater.
Got so bad toilet paper was rationed over in Hawaii.
One slight positive to the liberal antics was last Friday,
the Mother of all stock market buying opportunities.
Example had you bought Boeing and Costco at their lows last Friday. Boeing stock went up over $14 today and Costco stock went up $28.
I doubt that, seem like more right winger are apt to believe in conspiracy theories, like the ones pushed by Alex Jones. As far as I can tell no political party has the monopoly on lack of reason and common sense.
Although liberal I was listening to conservative (reasonable conservative) talk show host Tom Sullivan, he made a good point, saying people buying water, toilet paper etc. seem more appropriate for preparing for a hurricane, which I tend to agree with, he is very reasonable about the whole thing, trying to just stick to facts. However, if you listen to Michael Savage, who by the way has degrees in science (master in medical botany and Ph.D from Berkeley in medical nutritional ethnomedicine), he is much more circumspect. he is a strong Trump supporter, but also independent. He was blasting Limbaugh for his casual attitude towards the virus.
Antibiotics don’t work on viruses.
OVER REACTION….JUST USE COMMON SENSE…hyped by the news media. Be aware and pay attention to the facts but don’t go crazy….been through this before. Most people have at least a weeks food in their freezer and not time to panic.
I saw a doctor on TV and she had an excellent point, how can you really tell about these things until after it has passed? But yeah, I won’t be joining them. My biggest concern is my kids, otherwise I hope this will pass quickly. Also, why did our local politicians (DeSaulnier, Pelosi, etc) let the feds put all these idiots at Travis AFB? Now we have to be ground zero for this.
I went to Target in WC today on a normal shopping trip because I am low on a few daily essentials. There were so many empty shelves it was ridiculous. Of course, they were out of almost everything I needed so now I have to place an online order. I guess I should have planned better, but I really did not think my brands of contact solution and mac n’ cheese would be sold out already.
Utility systems require maintenance, and when personnel or equipment can’t be immediately provided, problems occur. A good example would be after Loma Prieta, when water flowed through pipes, but had been contaminated because of the earth’s movement, and boil orders were issued. Many people had no backup water supply and also no available method of boiling water, since power was out for an extended period. Any water main break repair which would ordinarily be handled promptly could be extended. People take water coming out of the taps completely for granted. It’s a mistake.
I think people are trying to be informed. Germany and Italy are posting information. Our information is minimal and not up to date.
We are getting information. Not sure what you want to know. VP Pence had a press conference on TV today with many of the people in charge. My advice is stay away from people who have just returned from China, Italy, and South korea. Wash your hands if you go anywhere.
Ricardo. I want to hear from the CDC.
Sorry Ozzie, you’re on the wrong website.
Ozzie if you watched Fox instead of CNN you would have seen and heard the head of CDC on the report by VP Pence today.
I don’t watch either.
Then the reason you’re wanting for information is on you alone.
A bit of both, people need to relax, just don’t drink
any Coronas, you’ll be fine.
WAG_THE_DOG
So if you catch the Corona virus – your kitchen sink or water dispenser in your fridge won’t work??? Why are people hoarding bottled water? Maybe I missed a CNN breaking news alert that it’s going to be the Corona-virus/earthquake/tornado/shark attack … so we all better panic… and don’t forget to blame Trump.
A lot of what we buy comes from China. Even if it’s made In the USA or another country, a lot of goods are made with Chinese parts. Car parts, drugs, electronics, clothing, etc. What will impact us is that the Chinese government is shutting down some of their factories and shipping from China is dropping.
I don’t know what’s going on with water and toilet paper, it doesn’t come from China.
of course, yes antibiotics only work on bacterial; infections, which viruses can easily turn into and become severe.
Hand sanitizer’s probably don’t kill most viruses and give a false sense of security.
You want to buy some water? I’ve got about 19,000 gallons in the swimming pool right now. How about $5 per gallon? You fill, your container. If I leave the cover rolled back for a couple days the chlorine will dissipate and it’ll be ready to drink. Are you worried about the PH? That can can be adjusted and tested to your spec too. Come on down!
I would be more worried about drinking water that you’ve bathed in. There’s not enough shock treatment in the world…
Does CoronaVirus cause the runs?
Do not understand the need for all that toilet paper…
If the rate of contagion becomes severe enough that traveling and unnecessary trips are discouraged (or prohibited,) basic items like toilet paper won’t be obtainable. This is what people are thinking when they stockpile it. Another consideration is that, even if we can travel freely, items produced in other countries where the supply chain has been interrupted won’t be available here. This is already true of some items which we have almost exclusively sourced from China. It’s not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to think proactively.
Thanks. That was a feeble attempt at humor…
Speaking of things imported, >80% of our antibiotics are made in (or with) ingredients from China, or sourced from there. I’ll be happy to only run out of toilet paper if the the sh$t hits the fan.
This has been a huge learning experience for the public (and me) regarding how much we rely on China or foreign nations for some important stuff…
Uh oh, I’m in trouble. I’ve got 4 rolls of single ply to my name. Was going to get some the next time I went shopping. I doubt if there’ll be any left. What are the symptoms of infection with Coronavirus anyway? In all the reporting on it, I haven’t heard anyone say what the symptoms are.
Stable genius bring manufacturing back to the US.
Your TDS and admiration for our great president shine thru again.Youre going to make the libbies mad at you.
When people you love have NO immune system the perspective in terms of prevention changes. There are comparisons between the deaths from Flu and the CoronaVirus 🦠🦠 because more people have died from the flu than CoronaVirus are not realistic. The ever changing evolving/flu which has been around for thousands of years is currently killing many thousands every year. Of course because the flu has spread across the planet but kills .001% of those infected. The death % with the CoronaVirus appears around 2.3% of those infected but there is zero data for people with no immune system. The reported % in Iran is 10% which is probably because the total people actually infected is being hidden.
People need to be serious about this and not keep discounting the threat. Hoax’s don’t kill people…
Despite what the MSM would have you believe, nobody is calling Coronavirus a hoax. When (if) you listen, listen to original sources – and listen carefully.
Studio Five O: I feel very sorry for you. Corona is the second worst beer made in the history of civilization. The first worst of course if Corona Light. 45 years of that. Do you hate yourself?
I went to Walmart to get some liquid soap to wash my hands since I’m running low on it. Well I arrived at the aisle only to find every soap was gone. My God everyone is acting as if it is the end of world.
Use dish soap on your hands, it kills germs.
Overreacting, for sure.
I is went to Costco and got me sum peanit buter and beree and toyyy- lett pauper. I be ready fur da zombee pocky-clips
I be feein sore-ee fir sim pee-pole
omg I’m getting a banner ad for n-95 masks at the top of this thread.lol
HaHaHaHaHa!!!
Costco has a great deal on bottled water at the moment. Only $2.99 for 40 16.9 oz bottles plus $2.00 CRV. I was there yesterday. They were re-stocking as the supplies got low. Lots of people buying them at that price.
Another thought: I bought more basic necessities than normal–rice, paper towels, etc. It’s not like will they go to waste.
It makes sense to have several days worth of essentials, primarily for earthquakes. We always have a few cases of water on hand and rotate through it to keep it fresh, as well as non-perishable food. We were a little low on a few things, so we were part of the hoards in Costco Saturday morning, but we would have been in decent shape had we not gone.
This is just like the scene from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. when the government came in a created a panic to keep people out of the area for the U.F.O. landing. unfortunately this is not the case.
viruses are mother natures insecticide.
Guess who the insects are?
I might have more supplies than typical households, but I try not to go crazy. I’d prefer that the supplies don’t outlast me, but I don’t generally need to stress about running out of anything. I’ve had no need to go battle it out for TP or bottled water. I’ll wait till everyone calms down before I do a Costco (etc., etc.) run. I’m a bit more anxious about an approaching international trip that was planned before this all came about. I really don’t want to face being told I can’t go home when I’m ready, that would sure throw a wrench in the works. Sometimes my spidey sense really amazes me though. I used to sell travel insurance for trip cancellation and illness coverage, and I do see the advantages of course This is the first time I’ve ever bought it though, and that was before I’d heard about any new virus. Hope I don’t need it, but it’s a nice feeling knowing it’s there under the circumstances.
This will get real interesting once all of these stores exhaust their regional warehouse supply.
The containers are not coming in from China. Longshoreman are barely working due the the empty ports. Rail traffic is slow as well.
It makes sense to prepare for a quarantine, it’s coming why are you fighting it?
Worst case scenario is there is an outbreak in your area…you just want to have some extra food laying around so you can avoid going out in public. Back in the 90’s I went through a serious bout of the flu with severe respiratory symptoms, I thought I was dying. I envision covid-19 must be like that and so if it creeps closer to our area, I will definitely be cutting back on the amount of time I spend in public areas.
FIVE O IS RIGHT……we can all die from Gun Violence if the Corona Virus & Global Warming / Climate Change doesn’t kill us all first!….. that is before Trump gets us into a War with Iran & White Supremacists start a Civil War right here at home using all their scary assault weapons before Russians manage to fix the election to defeat Joe & Bernie ! What’s really sad is all those things might very well upset my plans to get a job on CNN.
The hoarders will be the ones to kill us all, not the virus.
