It appears Cardenas Market at 2250 Monument Blvd. in Concord is closing.
The store opened to much fanfare in August of 2019, and after only six months in business, many in the community are reporting they plan to close.
A sign hanging inside the store thanks customers for their support, and says everything is now 50-percent off. It also urges customers to visit the Cardenas stores in several other Bay Area cities. Another smaller sign on the door says they’ll be closing early on March 4 for inventory, but will reopen on March 5.
An email from the Monument Democratic Club, which was sent to several community members, claimed they talked to the store manager, who confirmed the closure and said the sales at the store were not meeting expectations. The manager apparently said the store would be closing on Wednesday March 4.
Other Claycord readers have reported talking to employees, who also apparently confirmed the closure.
Cardenas Market has not responded to a request for comment, and a call to both the Concord and Pittsburg stores went unanswered.
The supermarket chain currently has about 12 stores around the Bay Area, including Concord, Pittsburg, Vallejo, Oakland, San Rafael and San Jose.
On the day they opened in Concord, Cardenas donated a total of $15,000 to three Concord high schools.

UPDATE: Cardenas Market In Concord Closing At The End Of Day Today
Sorry to see it close. Guess there will just be an empty shell again. Wish they’d tear that whole thing down and put an Olive Garden there LOL….
According to the last store employees of Safeway, more items left the store unpaid for than paid for,and the owner couldnt take the loss anymore. It’s also the reason foodmax (both) arent open 24 hours anymore
Before Food Maxx when Lucky was there, I heard the same thing from Lucky’s employees, too much theft.
This is the reason all groceries stores close in low income or “diverse” areas. They all steal.
NO!!! That place is great!
Very sad. I loved this place. Excellent prices friendly staff great tacos. 🙁
It’s closing because not enough of you shopped there.
No. It is because their neighborhood is made up of dirty thieves. That is why all those stores closed.
This is so sad. We shop here often and love the many brands, meat counter is top quality. We are sorry to see them close.
My husband and I wanted to order from them for a large family gathering. When talking to the ladies they were so rude, and acted like we were bothering them. We ended up doing it ourselves. I was disappointed. We had heard good things about this place, but we walked away never to go back.
We only went in there once, to get something I couldn’t find elsewhere. There weren’t many customers and it was a weekend. I’m not surprised.
I very much enjoyed the Mi Pueblo market in Pittsburg, would make a special trip often, but when they got bought out by Cardenas the standard of customer service went through the floor.
Nooo!! Love this place…will have to go to Pittsburg now.
My wife went there and came back saying stuff was way over priced there lol. I wish they had a safeway there.
Perhaps not enough of a Latino population close by…
OSH left that shopping center because of rampant theft. They are gone now, the move didn’t help enough.
Yes,there is,and this is why they had to close.
