QUESTION: Do you think California should execute inmates on death row, or do you think Gov. Newsom did the right thing by placing a moratorium on the death penalty?
Talk about it….

Yes. They need to follow through with the sentencing of the death penalty.
It’s been voted on and wanted by the state in the past.
Yes. Swift justice.
Yes, but Newsom couldn’t care less what you as voters think. He’ll do whatever fits his agenda!
Not until they stop convicting innocent people. I have nothing but respect for Newsom not signing death warrants with such a flawed justice system.
Please what innocent person can you name that has been put to death…Newscum should have to walk the walk and sponsor one of SQ finest…with full room board and playtime with his new buddy.
When was the last time an inmate on California’s death row was executed, and later was found to be innocent?
The answer, never.
I’m not against the death penalty but do think that the appeals process is necessary as a study found that 1 in 25 people sentenced to death is innocent. https://time.com/79572/more-innocent-people-on-death-row-than-estimated-study/
Also, the FBI themselves admitted that 90% of microscopic hair analysis contained errors. https://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-releases/fbi-testimony-on-microscopic-hair-analysis-contained-errors-in-at-least-90-percent-of-cases-in-ongoing-review
As for a list of people executed but could be innocent? https://deathpenaltyinfo.org/policy-issues/innocence/executed-but-possibly-innocent
Mob mentality is not what we need in this country. Law, Order, and due process is what is needed. The President himself should know better (he doesn’t) with the Central Park Five.
With modern investigation and DNA techniques the chance of that happening now is next to impossible. Old excuse That doesn’t hold much now to stop executions.
Start with the Rosenbergs and work your way forward in time for innocent people. There are at least 100 innocent people that were proven unequivocally to be innocent in the last 100 years. 1 innocent is too many! And we are the only first world nation still executing people. The other leaders in the area are Iraq and China.
sks: I had forgotten the details about the Rosenbergs and just looked into it. According to Wikipedia and the History channel, soviet documents released since the fall of the Soviet Union confirmed that they were spies and involved in trying to give the soviets information about the US nuclear weapons. So, on to the next name for you cause Rosenbergs were guilty.
Of course it should be reinstated. Why handcuff yourself by eliminating your best deterrent?
Pyrrhus,
Agree the appeals process is necessary but…”could be”, “possibly”?
Courts of law don’t dabble in these terms. You either is or you ain’t!
Next week. We are keeping alive some horrible people. Potential killers have no fear of spending thirty years in jail. They would fear the guillotine.
YES and enforce it 100%, no 10 year long appeals process. The victims certainly didn’t get similar treatment…neither should the criminals. I would gladly relieve somebody their right to kill if able to throw the switch or inject personally if one of my loved ones was murdered.
I think Gov. Newsom was absolutely right to halt death penalties. There is always a chance that people are wrongfully convicted. Have you seen The Green Mile!?
That’s a bit over the top Kitty…love the movie though.
You are pointing to a fictional movie as your reference?
No, Kitty, there is NOT ALWAYS a chance.
Yes, by all means. Stephen King is well known for his fact based fiction after all. Did you read The Dark Tower series? Walter Flagg is coming for you.
The Green Mile was the product of the author’s imagination. It has no bearing on reality.
What Newsom has done is set a dangerous precedent. He ignored the will of the people who voted in favor of the death penalty to rule, instead, by fiat. He dies not have that authority and that is not how our system works. Why some group representing the voters has not stepped forward to sue him for exercising this personal dictate defying the rule of law is beyond me. It looks like no one is looking out for the voters and their will can be overturned on a whim, making their vote virtually meaningless.
Kitty You know that was a made up movie and real not real life I hope
The Green Mile is fiction. Not a great reference for this conversation.
My feeling is that if Newsom felt that he could not sign a death warrant, which is a part of his job as governor, then he should have not run for governor or accepted the position. The death penalty was VOTED on and approved by the people of this state. Hence, we should be moving forward with the sentences as they were handed down by the judges of this state.
Rollo, wasn’t that Randal Flagg & Walter o’Dim ?
You’re correct Brandi. I juxtaposed elements of two of his many aliases.
Yes! And Tom Hanks’ character would never die. That’s probably true to! That’s called fiction Kitty! Can you not tell the difference?
Yes, yes, yes, execute them. It makes me sick knowing there are evil people like Richard Allen Davis that are still alive.
Especially him!!!!
Wow, he’s still alive? I wonder how much it costs us to keep him away from the general pop?
Execute them, and quickly.
We already voted it in, and was effectively eliminated by the courts for being
cruel and unusual punishment. Funny, but it’s the same procedure for putting down pets. there it’s considered humane.
As far as convicting innocent people, there is a lengthy appeal process in place to overturn if there is new EVIDENCE.
It does serve somewhat of a mixed message when they support aborting a child after birth, yet someone that has been given the death penalty they will fight to the end to keep them alive.
Liberalism a mental disorder? nah
Commonsensenor~
You are so Right! It saddens me about the Babies.
For the record, “aborting a child” after birth is called murder and no one supports that. That is fake garbage.
Grandmoto 3 and sks Unfortunately you are both incorrect. You both need to read more about the subject. It is much worse than you were led to believe.
Grandma and sks you might want to look into the comments of Virginia governor Ralph Northam. If you think he misspoke, please tell us what he really meant.
@grandamto3–You are misinformed, there are currently nine states that allow abortion up to the time of birth.
Stolen from Michael Savage, not a Savage fan, but adnit he is very bright, however that slogan is neither here nor there. You can’t group people together like that, we humans are much more complicated..
“So in this particular example (when the child is in the process of being born) if a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”
@ sks & grandma,
Good grief it is hard to fathom how woefully uninformed you are…no one supports post-birth abortion? Yeah okay, then go ahead and use that twisted pretzel logic to explain the visceral opposition to ANY and EVERY “born alive” bill that is introduced. And just a couple names you might want to look up are Kermit Gosnell and Francesca Minerva, not to mention the aforementioned Gov. Blackface of Virginia.
The governor needs to respect the will of the people. This was just decided again by the voters of this state.
Gavin could care less what the voter want.
Absolutely.
The death penalty won’t really stop any crime but it will rid society of some very evil people.
The death penalty should be carried the same day as the sentence is passed by the judge.
No more endless appeals.
It’s what the real people of CA really want.
I don’t think the death penalty is a deterrent, in fact I heard a judge on a radio program the other night just say that, and I have heard the same from lawyers and scholars. I realize there are also lawyers and scholars who support the death penalty. However, when people get so deprived that the commit horrendous crimes I doubt they thinking about what might happen to them. iIn fact I think they are so delusional that they think they won’t be caught at all. Just because I don’t support the death penalty does not mean I have sympathy for the killers, I don’t and am upset that Ted Bundy, and others was executed, no not in the least. These are individuals who have turned their back on society, and have trouble conforming, so a 30 year jail sentences is not on their mind when the commit crimes, they think the have outsmarted the system and will get away with it. Last, but not least I doubt it bring real closure to loved one left behind, they might feel some sense of justice if person that murdered their child, brother, husband, wife etc. but I have a feeling that only last so long, because they still have to live without that person in their lives.
Lastly but not least, I don’t like the state, government killing someone in my name. The late great KGO talk show host Gene Burns, was very much against the death penalty and being the intellectual giant he was, he was much better at formulating the reasons for it than I am.
Speaking personally, it’s been a deterrent on more than one occasion.
Hanne, it’s absolutely a deterrent. No executed convict has ever committed another crime, let alone a capital one. If we have to deter the scumbags one at a time, so be it.
I’m strongly in favor of the death penalty, but I don’t think it’s a deterrent. If someone is going to kill someone, they’re going to do it anyway. They’re not thinking about the laws or the consequences. Please.
Deterrent or not, can someone that doesn’t believe the death penalty is necessary please explain to me why Dylan Roof and Nicolas Cruz are still alive? Just two of many…
Rollo, on point again!
If the death penalty was a deterrent, he/she wouldn’t have committed the first murder. Fear of the death penalty would’ve stopped he/she. That being said, start the executions again in CA. Quickly.
Yes, please.
California is making it easier and easier for people with so called long term prison sentences to get reduced time based on good behavior and accepting god into their lives, then asking the world for forgiveness. Which of course is total BS because anyone who takes the life of an innocent person is never fully redeemed.
IF you take another person’s life, there is no closure for the victim’s families no matter how long they prison sentence is. Furthermore, seeing that same scumbag walk free is the ultimate insult to family members. Death penalty eliminates the possibility that the criminals might be given a reduced sentence, or freed. Well, they might find their freedom once their rotted soul leaves earth.
If you commit murder in cold blood or similar horrendous crimes, you should get life in prison without the possibility of parole. End of story.
Oh please, bleeding hearts always miss this fundamental fact: Life in prison is still LIFE. That imprisoned murderer still gets to read a book, do some pushups, or just sit, breathe, and be alone in their thoughts, i.e. although in prison, they are still enjoying LIFE, the very thing they violently snatched from their victim. And the cliche argument of “life in prison is worse than death” is stupid and wholly contradicted by the overwhelming majority who endlessly appeal their death sentence in hopes of commutation to a life sentence.
When you in interpreter it that why yes, but will not stop future murders, since, as I already commented, I doubt those committing murder are thinking that far ahead.. Both in terms of being executed and spending the rest of their life in jail.
How pitiful, yet more inane, empty platitudes…where in the cornbread **** did I say ANYTHING about whether the death penalty is a deterrent? First of all, it is indisputably IMPOSSIBLE to say it’s NOT a deterrent…does that mean it’s ALWAYS a deterrent in EVERY instance? Of course not, but it is impossible and factually WRONG to say it’s NEVER a deterrent.
But here’s the key thing about deterrence: I DO NOT CARE IN THE SLIGHTEST whether it’s a deterrent or not. It is FIRST AND FOREMOST a PUNISHMENT, the ultimate punishment, the most severe penalty we can mete out to the human refuse who have committed heinous acts which not just deserve, but REQUIRE they forfeit their right to continue drawing breath.
Hanne,
Life in prison without the possibility of parole does not exist in the leftists minds. The DP is absolutely a deterrent as many have previously stated. Maybe we could rename the death penalty to something more pleasant? I like End of Story, that has nice ring to it.
They should keep and use the death penalty, convicted should have 3 appeals and after that if the sentence is not reversed then it should be carried out with in a time frame no longer then 6 months
Limited appeals is good idea. How many and for how long is an interesting debate topic. The DNA argument makes the case for unlimited time…
Yes and make sure the method of execution scares the hell out of anyone contemplating murder. For example: Within hours of being found guilty the perpetrator is fed into the wood chipper one limb at a time. Maybe an alternative method of execution would be to baste the perp in gravy and lock them in a room with a Wolverine on Meth. Bet the murder rate would drop significantly. Just saying!
They should be put to death by the same method they used to kill some one. It wasn’t to inhuman for them to kill someone that way should be good enough for them
Good God, You sound like you are from the Middle Ages or Saudi Arabia. That is so barbarian and it would make us no better than the criminal.
As Gandhi said if you practice an “Eye for an eye, you leave the whole world blind”.
Wow. Any Saudi Arabians out there that take offense to that? Or some middle agers?
I don’t support the death penalty only because I understand that it costs the taxpayers more than a life sentence does due to the ridiculous appeals process. Let them rot in jail with no parole.
So what if it costs more, it’s a small price to pay to rid society of evil.
No better way to free up 700 beds at San Quentin.
Just because you execute murders won’t rid society of evil. There will, regrettable always be evil, and evil comes in many forms, not just murders.
Hanne,
This is why our defense budget is what it is. Peace through Strength.
Boil them now !
In theory, OF COURSE we should reinstate it. However, in reality even if it were, it would just go back to what it was, which is ostensibly a moratorium on the practice since the executions were very rarely actually carried out. But if we could somehow get Texas-efficient, then let’s start clearing the rolls.
Yes they should be, I feel that if you are convicted and get the Death sentence you get 1 appeal within 6 months and if found guilty a second time you are worm bait within 10 days. Enough of this keeping people on death row for years.
Well if they would start with Richard ala Davis, that would go a long ways toward the intended.
Newscum should not have the authority to suspend the vote of the people in implementing the death penalty.
Death row should have an express lane for murderers like Scott Peterson (liker of Laci Peterson), Ramon Salcido (murdered his four (?) kids by slashing their throats), and Richard Allen Davis (killer of Polly Klaas).
Yes! More good examples for the left. C’mon, convince me why they should all be breathing the good people’s air.
I think the death penalty should either be implemented or abolished. With modern technology available, there should be only one appeal allowed, with a time limit. Since juries are notoriously inconsistent and can be swayed by human emotion, perhaps guilt/innocence and punishment/revenge could be decided by a computer.
And don”t forget that filthy POS Scott Peterson.
He’s still alive when he should have been executed a long time ago.
Where the is absolutely no question at to guilt certainly. A good example is the guy who killed the young woman on BART. That case certainly warrants the death penalty. We gave Charlie Manson free room and board until he dies, that penalizes society not the criminal.
Yes it should, as it’s the will of the majority. Our Governor betrayed a good number people who voted for him.
For those fearful of an innocent person being put to death, then perhaps start with the killers who have overwhelming evidence against them. That should reduce the 744 by a substantial percentage.
FYI: Even the Rosenberg’s two sons say they were guilty.
wow the lemmings sure love the shiny objects dems throw their way
oh no executions …yay for sewscum he is king
oh wait the whole state run democratic political socialist communist 10 bathroom claim your a dog society all ready has halted new prisons to house the influx of criminals through the boarders and the DA has issued a statement that they will no prosecute illegals anyways at all but plead them out and hide them form ice …..
so the question of lol death row
and executions for those absolutely proven caught red handed literally vile scum that should be sent away form this earth since they have no cause for being here after eating people or unspeakables against young children
the problem with the system of execution is the flaw of severity
again somone who is eating people and storing them at their home is a no brainer
same about un speakable horror’s against young children
drug dealers killing each other have flooded the deathrow making it a eye for an eye which it is not …..it is and should be for the unholy people not supposed to be on this earth ….
people who live in so called hoods and or run with gangs and see it and experience death far more frequently than a civilized law abiding citizen does not get deterred by death row ….
deterrence of those types are subsequent to interpretation
those people need to be in prison yet dems wont build any claiming self rehab for felons is the way to go …you voted for these entitled people remember that
so dem politicians have made their platform to free as many criminals and not prosecute them to gain more votes from those effected by such things
that did not work so well so they decided to get rid of bail and now fees for criminals
whos fees are paid by the families who instead of keeping their low lifes in prison they blow the money on their release and fines so the loser can burden their families and make them pay again and again
so the Brainiac dem politicians made it easier for these criminals to be released and not pay nay fines or fees ….so they would be less likely to commit said crimes again right
nope all for votes ….the dem politicians would set manson free if they were guaranteed a thousand votes every year ….that’s all they care about
yet voters seem mesmerized by the complaisance of these Brainiac politicians and their astounding stand to support crime make laws to increase it and make it cheaper to get free
newscums new deal will be for you voters to pay a fee to help the families of these criminals get back on their feet after their family member commits crimes …..
as well as provide vehicles and dmv fees for the offender to get to their jobs after release ….
and provide money for vacations to ease them back into society with your money ….
don’t laugh its coming
no one ever though a man hole cover would be enemy number 1 either
or that your neighbor could claim to be a statue therefore deem themselves
a landmark and request state funding to support them …yet here we are
the laughing stock of the world …
when we used to a place people wanted to get to so their lives could be stable and prosperous ….now they come and rip off our tax system that the
democrats are handing willingly over in billions
then raising taxes again to repeat the cycle
but I digress
Supporting the death penalty while opposing abortion are not intellectually incompatible concepts, notwithstanding the pathetic attempts of some to paint that picture. Someone getting the death penalty has “earned” it, they have taken the life and free will bestowed upon them and then voluntarily undertaken degenerate acts of evil while harming others. Only the most stupid and vile amongst us would attempt to equate the life of that deranged criminal with that of an unborn baby, aka an innocent human life.
Absolutely bring it back! However, you have to actually USE it otherwise it’s just not effective. They need to put in an express lane. Newsome is an idiot!
I think Liberalism is a disease.
Libelike like conservatelism without common sense is a problem, and I see a lot of it on both sides of the political spectrum
Thanks Hanne. Conservatives and Liberals can still have meaningful debates on policy. left and right, not so much.
We do have it back, we even voted to expedite the process. Newsuck has taken it upon himself to carry on his fathers mission of getting criminals off . His dad was a criminal defense attorney , his aunt is Nancy Pelosi. He has ignored the will of CA voters and is doing what he wants! Recall Newsuck !!!!
Not only should they resume executions, they should have a “clean out the shelter day” like the SPCA. Strap them onto the electric sofas and go to work.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Oh, and, Yes.
Yes, but only for politicians.
HELL YES!! They can sort out cases where the alleged criminal might not be guilty and still put to DEATH the ones that are 100% guilty with eye-witnesses and DNA evidence.
Start DNA testing every single case where there is DNA to test. That ought to sort out the innocent ones.
Get rid of Newsom and start frying them !!!!!!
Public gallows…….it makes a big impression on people when they see someone swing….definitely the criminals. There used to be a tree with a noose hanging from it at the Leonis Adobe in Calabassas, used to make an impression on my suspects.
108RS
Yes and impeach and/or remove politicians who say yes they will enforce what the majority of the voters have requested then do a 360 to garner more votes from the entitlement crowd.
We need to keep crime down and provide swift justice in California and the rest of the nation. Look at being lenient has gotten us.
On the opposite spectrum, if you really want to know what scary might look like with regards to criminals getting more rights, just tune in to your local democratic candidate debate saga…
Just listening to Bernie Sanders sound off about his socialist agenda and more rights for the “misrepresented” gives me the creeps.
A country which that man in charge will mean that the most evil of criminals will be pardoned and given their free health care and access to better living accommodations with the help of public assistance.
He is already talking about “reform” programs for criminals and second chances for them to enter society again.
Nice to know that your future next door neighbor might be a murderer.
You have to enjoy the irony of having this “Question” posted above the story about the unprovoked stabbing story. In Troll-Land, only 50 people would be allowed on ‘Death Row’. When the 51st inmate moved in, the man/woman at the top of the list would leave prison in an urn!
And that’s how you reduce the murder rate, Troll-Style!
Yes that way we could give Sacramento another reason to render the will of the people useless!!!! AGAIN!!!!
I used to be for the death penalty as a deterrent for the most heinous crime, murder. Then I saw the list of countries that still practice it. I don’t think the U.S. should be on any list with those other countries. It definitely changed my perspective.
Yes, we shouldn’t be on that list. We should be on our own list as the greatest country on the face of the earth, complete with all the rights as bestowed upon us by God and our Founding Fathers.
Didn’t you know that the prisons are full of innocent people.
