The pursuit Thursday night of a vehicle reported as stolen led officers from Highway 24 in Contra Costa County to San Leandro, ending in the arrest of a 20-year-old man on multiple charges.
The vehicle, reported stolen to the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff shortly 11 p.m., was spotted and followed by Lafayette police while traveling westbound on state Highway 24.
The Sheriff’s Office STARR 1 helicopter provided support as the vehicle was followed to the area of Marina Boulevard and Interstate Highway 880, where the driver fled an attempted stop at high speed.
“The officers terminated the pursuit, while STARR 1 stayed overhead monitoring the vehicle’s location” as it went to the Bayfair BART station, the sheriff’s office said in a release.
The driver abandoned the vehicle, ran along the tracks and attempted to hide, but was located by STARR 1 and a CHP helicopter.
Suspect Joseph Willis surrendered and was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on charges that include felony evading, obstruction, vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, and multiple weapons violations
including felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a stolen firearm and having large capacity magazines.
Willis had three outstanding arrest warrants from other jurisdictions and was also booked for a probation violation, the sheriff’s office said.
He is being held without bail.
Good police work. License plate reader? One more bad guy off the street.
And the State of California wants me to pay their court costs out of my taxes because it would be an unfair burden for the criminal.
Friends and Family report that Willis is “basically a good kid”….
Oh… and…. he was “turning his life around”…
This makes me so sad. The guy is only 20 years old and has so many violations with the law. He has really messed up his life with bad choices before he’s even had a chance to live. SMH
I’m glad he was apprehended. GREAT job by the Sheriff’s Office.
He probably had a good teacher. A for effort.
Salty here.
Must be related to the other CRIMINALS!!
Salty OUT!!
He should have stayed in school ad learned something useful.
But he was turning his life around and doing so much better since his last arrest, arrest, arrest…..let him figure out the size of a prison cell to figure out life actions have consequences
Too bad he didn’t fire his gun when cornered. Would have been great to fire back and get rid of this piece of human trash once and for all.
Well good police work …real good and thankful
Problem is this state has put a DA and judges in position to release criminals like these as a sanctuary policy and a democrat philosophy and as well as a chaos factor to keep the lemming voters on the line so politicians trying to get re elected
Can say oh yes I will fight to rid crime
All the while playing pelosi’s piano of sanctuary and socialism and serving up American citizens to crime and insurgents
Prefering to pander to illegals while taking money to do so
There is not one democrat politician who care about stopping crime or your safety
Yet the tools keep voting for their free money and the fact that dem politicians promise to slay the dreaded bullies and plastic straws for them
Let’s see is the democrat politicians help you when they are done with you and no longer need your vote as illegals will put number you in the state soon and the scale will be tipped to make you irrelevant
It only gets worse under democrats socialist rule
Or do you not understand how socialism works
Try looking it up
But not at the library they are compromised and subject you to ransom ware
Extra bonus of voting for democrats
Great job
I’m seeing a common pattern. In California there is no accountability. Follow the case, he will be out of custody in 90 to 180 days and ready to repeat at the cost of another tax paying citizen. Also, the high speed evading is a charged where he could be sent to prison. The felon in possession of a firearm was once a serious offense but not anymore. His rights are more important than yours. Once again, follow the case he will be out in 90 to 180 days.
Thank you liberals.
@Darwin, please watch your language. Our overlords in the Democratic party find the word “felon” to be insensitive and racist. Please refer to the young lad as a “justice involved individual”.
Thank you.
@Ven Xeter
You made my day!
So true and and funny.
Well said. “Justice Involved Individual” Hee hee hee
As with some other people, I want to call out the Democrat Party and the residents of California who voted them into office. They turned a noble idea, criminal justice reform, and turned it into a get-out-of-jail-for-life card for felons. I would like to see punishment commensurate to the crime, and restitution whenever possible. The only way I will see that is if I move out of the state. Becton (plagiarist) is only a symptom of the deeper disease in our state.
BTW-if officers had to break off pursuit because he was driving too fast and putting others at risk, he should face attempted murder charges.
And he should be liable for the hourly expense of the helicopter that had to track him.
Turning his life around? The only turning he did was from highway 24 to 880. Sorry, but this guy went out of his way to earn his future.
Life is a series of choices.
I love that Star 1 was able to track this idiot and direct officers to his location once he ditched the car. Choppers are expensive, though; I wonder if it would be possible to track fleeing cars with a drone operated by an officer in a patrol car hanging back without lights and sirens. I think you can equip them with the FLIR system, zoom cameras, and all the other tools in the helicopters. I’d also go for Mavericks, but Burris would have a case if law enforcement went that far. Still, one can dream.
I think a few agencies already use drones. Next up? A way to take the perp out with a drone. Then? Police State.
just like that Iran dude… take crooks out with a laser guided drone… ka-boom
A suspect in Texas who shot police officers was taken out by a robot that delivered a bomb.

Happy New Year Joseph Willis and many more to come (In prison), enjoy, you will get to see your old friends…
Joseph, your new cell mate will ask you. What do you want to be the husband of the wife? Just beware the same outcome is going to happen.
👍
Great work by CoCo, CHP and likely other agencies involved. Now let’s see what Becton does with the case.

Exactly!
Where are you moving Salty!
Justice-Involved person lol
Salty here…
To Sign from Above…
Time will tell. But I cant stand what Newsome, Pelosi, Boxer and Frankenstein have done to our state. You would think these powerful politicians would have done things for the betterment of our state. But look what they did. Illegal immigration issues, giving soo much free $hit to lazy people and drug addicts that brings them here draining the system, over crowding. Overwhelms housing so now housing cost sky rocket causing more homeless people, schools are overcrowded, more crime.. oh ya and let’s LEGALIZE gateway drugs i.e. marijuana to make our kids like Jeff Spicoli (fast times at ridgemont high reference 😉). So now more doped up non motivating people that wont want to work.
But hey… Maybe I’m wrong..
SALTY OUT!!!
