The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday in the noon hour.

Throughout the past few months, we’ve been reporting on several businesses who have, or will shut their doors forever.

QUESTION: In your opinion, what are some stores you think might not exist 10 years from now?

Talk about it….

Way too many to list. A better question would be, what are some stores you think might still exist 10 years from now?
Walmart is like a cockroach, it will be around forever.

…that’s what they said about Sears.

Businesses with manageable debt loads, and those leveraging technology with an eCommerce presence will survive.

Those who are stuck in the “old ways” of business will ultimately go away unless they adapt. Those who are innovative, in tune with the times and lucky will survive. It’s all about luck anyway.

Olive Garden!

Ha! Olive Garden is TOAST!

I believe Disney Store will soon close all stores. Now they are contracting with Target to sell Disney Store exclusive merchandise. They’ve been downsizing for years.. no new stores have opened in 2 years. Not a good sign for them.

Fry’s will soon be gone……. I can think of many others.

The only thing that will always survive: Pizza places and funeral homes.

Pizza and death… hmmm, wonder if the two are related.

Penney’s will be gone. Probably Macy’s and Nordstrom’s as well. Frys won’t even last the year. Best Buy? CC Times isn’t a store but they are about dead as far as newsprint is concerned. Only a few of those marijuana businesses will last.

CC Times is actually Mercury News. But agree that more newsprint will go out of business.

Eddie Lampert will survive, thank you very much! But Sears and K-Mart don’t have long. He sold the Die Hard name to Advance Auto Parts. When he finally runs out of things to auction off, he’ll let the company fold.

@chuckie the troll:
“The Contra Costa Times” should rename itself as “The Washington Post Western Edition” or the New York Times/West” as it seems to repeat the leftist screeds from these two & other leftist leaning rags. I seldom ever see any positive points of view from the right. About the only things I care for are the comics & puzzles. (No comment on sports section as I am not a sports fan.)

What about the Obituries? I always wanted to know who i might know that died.

I quit reading the coco times when they quit publishing “Vital Satistics” You could read the county’s listings of marriages, divorces, and the names and ages of the people listed. Yes the paper actually used to publish this type of information.

Restaurants and beauty stores will be all that remains. Our society will digitize and a social credit system will ensure that undesirables cannot use internet shopping.

It is already happening. “Enlightened” people have been pressing companies to shun (block/discriminate against/blacklist/etc.) people who support the 2nd Amendment. When those enlightened people come to see the light, their world will be be devoid of freedom and liberty … well, except to maybe go out to eat and hit the salon.

I would say Joann’s Art supplies store will remain open A lot of people who needs custom framing, art supplies store and other items. I like their customer service there.

I believe Macy’s will survive. I work there we are busy all the time, prices are cocompetive Macy’s is very proactive, yes people buy online, oft en pick up in store or return in store which means when customers are in store they often buy more things Also if you have Macy’s card you get 25% extra on most merchandise. We just had a promotion every time you spend $50.00 you got $10.00 Macy’s money, which is like cash no restrictions can combine with coupon, customers love it, works only with Macy’s card. Not sure about Nordstoms don’t shop there except for the Rack. Customers tells me selection and prices not great..

You are selling the **** outta Macy’s. A representative even in off-hours. Good for you!

My simple answer…truck drivers will suffer the same fate taxi drivers are facing now.
More important to me, by my rough guesstimate we lost about 75% of the public shooting ranges within 100 miles of Concord since 2010. And gun stores have taken a hit big time. Hogans and Whitebears shutdown by the late 90s but we got Guns and Fishing in Vacaville and those yahoos up at Canyon Sports so it washes out roughly with Vacaville having an indoor range too. I hate shooting indoors though.
Growth industries will include pot stores and fast food if I had to guess.
What will be interesting is what as of yet unforeseen business model disruptors will emerge. Robotics are going to explode. Artificial intelligence is still in it’s infancy but the gains even in the last three years have been gi-normous. Yup in 10-20 years assuming we haven’t crapped the nest too badly by then environmentally, we are going to have alot of people with not much useful to occupy their time if we don’t tread carefully. And we won’t tread carefully, it’s not in our nature.

Right now people are trying to enforce the California AB5 law employment whatever the crap not only Truck drivers, Uber/Lyft App shareride but also freelancers/Independent contractor is going to affect too such as job on Upwork site Now, Upwork is gonna be hard to get accepted because too many Virtual Assistant have the same skills and same experience so, you pretty much have to compete against other VAs to build up a difference skills and experience.

Right now, it totally unclear how anyone gonna figure out what to do to avoid the AB5 law so, it very tough not only for California but it gonna affect the whole US because companies outside California not gonna want to hire anyone from California because companies outside California have to set up the payroll and difficult to where to go from classifying yourself as employers and/or self employers.

Atticus drive to Oakley and check out “Hook Line and Sinker” very good Gun shop and fishing shop.

You’re the second person to suggest that since Christmas Abbie R. Sounds like a mandate to me.
To be clear I didn’t mean man date, but mandate. Don’t want any confusion. 🙂
Concordejet, those are real and immediate concerns. But I’m looking down the road, not far at all I think, when no people at all will be driving for a living. AB5 will be irrelevant.

All brick and mortars are at risk. With all the grab and run thefts and no way to stop them, what are they supposed to do but pass their loss onto us? I personally like using Amazon—got tired of fighting traffic, parking only to find myself unable to find what I wanted. Sears, Frys first to go.

Expect to close within 10m years:
Jimmie John’s, Papa John’s, Nob Hill Foods, Sears, JC Penney, whatever Golf store that goes into the corner at Monument and Contra Costa Blvd where Borders used to be. Barnes and Noble, Weinerschnitzel,

Any store that supplies components that need to be assembled will be gone. The era of both the craftsman and the do-it-yourselfer are coming to an end.

Now rather than building things or fixing things, assemblies are ordered using a keyboard. So really, all anyone needs to know how to do anymore is to type, and open a box.

America is full of items built by craftsmen that can be useful for a hundred years. Items built from steel, cast metals, and quality wood not even available anymore. Art and heirlooms. Instead that stuff hits the landfill and people buy junk made from plastic and pressboard. And plastic bags and straws are the problem?

DIY is very much alive, it is just changing. Companies make it easier to DIY. Contractor remodeling and construction is still too expensive.

Starbucks will survive.
Bill Bob,
You better hope government doesn’t stick their noses in the DIY thing….like the EU where you’re not allowed to work on or service your homes appliances.

When the guy that owns Amazon buys the Washington Post, that tells you newspapers aren’t going away.

It’s going to take more than 10 years, but gas stations will be replaced by charging stations.

PG&E as we know it won’t exist as a private entity. The structure and sources of the power grid will be different with the use of more rooftop solar and solar farms. Put a fork in the coal industry.

But we will probably never have flying cars.

Just heard a report on CBS radio, Fry’s is changing it’s business model. It will become a consignment store, which means it will not pay vendor’s until the product has sold, instead of paying within 45-60 days as is customary. The business analyst speculated that it suggest Fry’s is strapped for cash. It was quite an in debt interview, talking about how popular they use to be, and what has changed.
