On Saturday, December 14, the City of Walnut Creek will be hosting the 9th annual running of the Walnut Creek Half Marathon.
The race begins at 7:00 a.m. in Civic Park.
Nearly 1,500 runners will compete along the 13.1 mile loop around N. Civic Drive, Oak Rd., Treat Blvd. (into Concord), Cowell Road (in Concord), and Ygnacio Valley Road. The curbside lanes on these streets will be coned off and designated for runners.
Road closures and detours will begin around 5:30 a.m. Normal traffic will resume around 9:00 a.m. Hydration stations are available for the runners who participated.
For those who need to cross Ygnacio Valley Road to access Shadelands Business Park, please enter through Via Monte.
Alternatively, Mitchell Drive and Shadelands Drive will allow access in to the Shadelands Business Park from Oak Grove Road.
If you are traveling along the affected streets during the race, please be patient and drive safely.

What about folks who must cross the curbside lane on Treat to get out of their neighborhood?
Same question for those in the Northgate/San Miguel area, Where to cross to get to the freeway, both Ygnacio and Treat appear to be blocked.
To leave Northgate: San Carlos left turn to Ygnacio is open.
Scheduling this race on one of the busiest weekends of the year??
Yep, inconveniencing the majority for the benefit of the minority. Typical liberal thinking. These marathons are usually fund raising events that could easily be turned into some kind of fund raising event that does not inconvenience so many people on a holiday shopping weekend. Really poor planning!!!
Crap!!! We have to be a Northgate HS for wrestling tournament. Coming from Brentwood. Dam it. I don’t see any other way to get there.
It’s all over by 9am. If you need to get somewhere earlier through WC the race crosses Ygnacio on the pedestrian bridge just east of Civic. Ygnacio is never completely cut off. Since the runners spread out pretty quickly I doubt any right turn issues on Treat. Just wait for a break and gun it! Just like you usually do!
Interesting to see the WCPD had set up an elevated observation platform now parked next to the ice rink. Never knew they had one. Sort of like a mechanical dinosaur. I guess they have money these days. I’ve seen several new mo po’s and now this guizimo. Don’t let CPD hear about it or thay will need some!
Be aware that there will also be Letter carriers delivering parcels early morning!
John Muir Hospital, how would one access it during the event’s time frame?
During the race the 3 private driveways for the Keys Condos were partially blocked.
If you had an appointment, too bad. You had to wait several minutes for that block of runners to go by.. They didn’t even give us any written notice in advance.
