The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday in the noon hour.

QUESTION: If a person kills another person due to reckless driving, drunk driving, etc., should they ever be able to get their drivers license back, or do you think it should be taken away for life?

First – they should be treated as if they pulled a weapon out of the pocket and killed the person face to face. When someone voluntarily engages in this type of behavior – they are knowingly breaking the law and putting other people at unreasonable risk.

Second – after they get out of prison for killing someone – no they don’t get their license back – they can take a bus, taxi, Uber, Lyft, ride a bike, walk, or have a friend drive them.

Agree all the way.

PO'd November 20, 2019 - 12:17 PM - 12:17 PM

They will drive anyway. and will contribute to high speed chases.

Roz November 20, 2019 - 12:18 PM - 12:18 PM

I agree, if it’s reckless or drunk/high driving that drivers license is pulled.

Now that we have Rideshare’s as an alternative transportation option, driving a motorized vehicle should become more of a “privilege” and not a “right”. If a person kills or maims another person their right to drive and it is determined to be the fault of the driver they should be revoked.

Celia November 20, 2019 - 9:42 PM - 9:42 PM

Hi Michael,

I believe that driving has always been a “privilege” according to the DMV handbook. But thanks for the reminder.

Too many people convicted of DUI with or without causing an accident and killing someone will someday drive again even if their license is suspended or revoked. Simply taking away their license doesn’t work. If someone is killed by a DUI offender and that offender was found to be at fault, the penalty should be a mandatory minimum of twenty years or more in the state penitentiary without the option of early release.
The same goes for reckless driving, and maybe even throw in texting while driving for good measure.
Behave yourself while driving and there won’t be a problem.

NEVER let them drive again.
The person they killed will never get to drive again.

I know of a teenager who was drunk and killed a young man back in 2003, and it was horrible seeing him go on to college and post pictures of himself holding the big red cup. I am sure he wasn’t drinking milk.

It doesn’t matter.
There was a time when driving without a license in California meant getting your car impounded. When they realized that they were impounding the cars of a lot of illegal aliens, they quit doing it. There are more and more unlicensed drivers on the roads every year because California is willing to tolerate them.

The judge should have the option but not make it mandatory so they can use it with discretion depending on the circumstances.

Spark Baldman November 20, 2019 - 1:15 PM - 1:15 PM

I believe it should be taken away for at least a 10 year period if not life. However ,I still live in California so why should it be any different than any other crime around here? We are soft as butter!

TraumaRx November 20, 2019 - 1:35 PM - 1:35 PM

Just a reminder if you do decide to drive drunk make sure you wear your seatbelt.

Gittyup November 20, 2019 - 3:33 PM - 3:33 PM

With all due respect, nobody “decides” to drive drunk. It is the nature of alcoholic beverages that, after the second drink, one is incapable of making any informed, intelligent, or responsible decisions. In some cases and with some individuals, that inability takes effect after one alcoholic beverage. Alcoholic beverages are a central nervous system depressant, slow reaction time, and loose inhibitions. That combined with driving a vehicle is a recipe for disaster. Don’t drink and drive.

UUUMMM

driving is a privilege

there is no reason that it should be a right ….and it is not

entitled people say its a right because well they believe and their parents believe and the state believes and their friends believe it is

AGAIN IT IS NOT

and yes so many vehicles were impounded from illegals driving drunk the state could not deal with all the bashed up beaters they were driving …now they all drive escalades with out fear of losing them

the state has bent over for illegals while over charging americans the whole way to offset
which is why the state is in disrepair and falling apart and divided and baren store fronts riddled with gangs and criminals and bums the further you get from the city center ….huh that does sound like mexico

so the state is making demifornia look appealing to Mexicans …wow
so dems can run a business …off the backs of americans ….well I stand corrected

Ilovepopcorn November 20, 2019 - 2:17 PM - 2:17 PM

The circumstances matter. So yes and maybe no.

Rolling Wheels November 20, 2019 - 4:17 PM - 4:17 PM

People will drive with no license , what needs and should happen , their car needs to be impounded and taken away so they cannot even be tempted to drive

Gititogether November 20, 2019 - 4:32 PM - 4:32 PM

Prisoners aren’t issued licenses…yet

DVC Student November 20, 2019 - 4:39 PM - 4:39 PM

If they drove drunk & killed someone, then they weren’t following the law.

So if you take their license away for life, what makes you think they would follow the law?

RJ November 20, 2019 - 6:13 PM - 6:13 PM

Speaking of which – how is David Rosen doing these days? I think he changed his name or something as I cannot find any information about him online after his horrific car killing spree on Treat Blvd a few years ago….

Valerie Mencarini November 20, 2019 - 6:20 PM - 6:20 PM

As a parent who’s son was killed the judiciary system is a joke The person who killed my son was a minor with huge offenses prior Hess able to have a license for two weeks also prior to killing my son the Law gave him 7 months in Byron Boys ranch for felony gross negligence
That was the maximum
I’d vote jail term mandatory plus no driver license

Sam Malone November 21, 2019 - 7:45 AM - 7:45 AM

Never should they be allowed to drive again. Plain and simple no bleeding heart excuses. They will, as others have noted, drive illegally and others will be hurt or die, including LE who will be charged with trying to stop them.
Such a sad state of affairs. Their is no respect, credibility, morality and common sense that we see now days. Sorry, but the old school ways are still much needed.

American November 21, 2019 - 9:46 AM - 9:46 AM

They should be shot right there on the side of the road next to the accident where they killed an innocent person. That will keep them from never driving again and protecting the community. No more BS.
