PETA Honors SF As Nation’s Most Vegan-Friendly City

San Francisco is the country’s top vegan city, according to a new ranking by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals released.

According to the list, San Francisco beat out Los Angeles, New York and Portland, Oregon, when it comes to offering vegan options everywhere from sports arenas to airports to a wide variety of restaurants around town.

The city offers vegan food at Oracle Park, San Francisco International Airport and at dozens of dining establishments like Goldie’s Vegan Deli, where patrons can order lox made of carrots, and Wildseed, which serves up beer alongside vegan dishes like mushroom “meatball” marsala and poke made of beats.

“The number of American vegans grew by 600 percent in just three years, and the cities on PETA’s list are meeting the skyrocketing demand for animal-friendly fare,” said PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman.

Detroit, Orlando, Dallas, Nashville, Washington, D.C., and Tulsa, Oklahoma rounded out the top 10.

Because there are Vegan restaurants? What are you, 4? you don’t like eating your broccoli? Only KFC gravy and butter for you?

Turn n Burn November 17, 2019 - 10:36 AM - 10:36 AM

Mike, I love veggies, but not going to walk through piles of crap and pee, or walk past the prostitutes and drug addicts that the City says is OK to do now and wont Prosecute these crimes. SF unfortunately has become a third world country.

Some vegan replacements don’t make sense. Lox is salmon. Carrot is not a valid substitute for the protein in found in fish. Same with poke, which is a style of dish in which seafood is often a main component, so beats are not going to be an equal substitute for that protein.

Some restaurants don’t understand how to replace meat with substitutes that provide similar nutritional benefits. There are businesses that have jumped onto the vegan craze but aren’t offering substantially healthy meals.

Lox made from carrots and wild seed and poke made from beets…that’s just strait up wrong! As the Valley Girl says…”Gag me with a spoon” RIP Frank Zappa.

Gittyup November 17, 2019 - 4:27 AM - 4:27 AM

This poke is “made of beats.” It has got that little something extra. Maybe dances hiphop on your plate.

John P November 16, 2019 - 9:43 PM - 9:43 PM

I’m going to the City to celebrate with a bacon burger!

Cool

Yeah, like PETA still has any credibility as an animal rights organization anymore…

RDS November 17, 2019 - 7:14 AM - 7:14 AM

They can hang it next to their “Most Human Fecal Bacteria Diversity” award.

Captain Bebops November 17, 2019 - 8:57 AM - 8:57 AM

Soon to lead the world in the highest number of pernicious anemia victims. 😉

Talk about your zombie apocalypse, they’ll never know what hit them.

My daughter isn’t vegan, but she is a pescatarian, and being in the South is rough for her. Some restaurants still use lard to cook with, and even veggie dishes frequently have pork in them. I have been to some vegan/vegetarian restaurants with her, and it didn’t seem to damage me any. I have learned that I prefer vegetables dishes to fake-meat products.

S November 17, 2019 - 11:21 AM - 11:21 AM

I can see where it would be difficult for her in the south. Best catfish ever… fried in lard.

WaterWoman November 17, 2019 - 2:22 PM - 2:22 PM

Lard is one of the healthiest and most beneficial fats to cook with, actually. It is the vegetable oils, especially soybean oils, that are damaging to the humans.

Cowellian November 17, 2019 - 3:25 PM - 3:25 PM

I remember when Krispy Kreme doughnuts were fried in lard, and they tasted a lot better than they do now.

Dorothy November 17, 2019 - 1:10 PM - 1:10 PM

Sorry, I still like hamburgers that are real. And I eat my veggies when I buy and cook them. I don’t need to pay extra at someplace that fakes it.

Wonder how they feel about the new process that is suppose to product protein by sucking in air and passing it through whatever. (Burp)

Did I say that Outloud November 17, 2019 - 4:22 PM - 4:22 PM

Congratulations SANctuary Francisco ….going to celebrate with a juicy steak dinner.

caskydiver November 17, 2019 - 5:14 PM - 5:14 PM

This “title” is something to aspire to?? I don’t give a hoot at all. Like previous posters already noted, PETA has no credibility (not that I care about their opinions anyways).

What SF SHOULD aspire to is lower cost of living, lower crime, low/no homelessness, good education system, running a city by rule of law, etc. etc.

LET’s CELEBRATE!!! I’m thinking Lucille’s for a nice T-BONE!

All joking aside, I would love to be a vegetarian/vegan……..if they would only allow me to eat meat!!
