REMINDER: If A Traffic Signal Isn’t Working, Treat It As A Stop Sign

When the power’s out and you approach a non-working traffic signal, you must treat it as if it were a stop-sign before safely proceeding through the intersection.

Do not just drive through the intersection without stopping.

Here’s a video from a few years ago showing what not to do when a traffic signal isn’t working….

I had a wheelchair operator pop out from a parked car in an intersection a few years ago. At the time I was stopped at the crosswalk while an emergency vehicle had cleared the intersection. I believe the letter of the law states to treat an intersection like a 4 way stop after the emergency vehicle leaves EVEN IF YOU HAVE A GREEN LIGHT. The wheelchair person very nearly was clipped !! By a motorist who did not stop to make sure all the crosswalks were clear of pedestrians, cyclists, and yes: wheel chairs.

My comment is if you are an old Chinese person get help crossing the street. Every time I see a person killed walking across the street in SF or SJ it is a old Chinese woman or man.

IQ tests need to be administered prior to issuing a Driver’s License.

You have to add a common sense test and it’s quite simple. Hand the subject a metal rake (the kind with the hard tines that are bent 90 degrees.) Now ask them to lean it against a wall. If the tines face the wall, they pass. Tines facing out…… fail!

Now ask the failed subject to step toward the rake. When they step on it and smack themselves in the face they receive an education in cause and effect. Oh yeah, don’t bother testing millennials.

And reproducing!

Monument is worse. Goes to show what kind of idiots drive around…

What do you do at the Monument intersection under the 680 intersection wher there are 6 different direction to go? I can’t imagine how dangerous that would be.

I dont think theres enough room in the handbook to explain that intersection. I see accidents there routinely.

Problem is you dont notice those traffic lights signal. I’ve caught myself running through only realizing a second later what happened. I guess maybe im just stupid

Also if you follow the law and stop you are endangering your life because someone else may rear end you full speed

Turn in your license immediately and sell your vehicle. Hope you’re better at walking…

Those people in that video are treating that intersection EXACTLY how I see people every day treating four-way stop signs.

People tend to play “follow the leader”. When they see someone get away with it, they think they can also. You’ll see it with every left turn cycle at Ygnacio/Oak Grove, a half dozen cars tailgating through after the light turns red
