California’s Pump Prices Spike While Majority Of Country Pays Less To Fill-Up

The national gas price average continues to hold steady on the week at $2.65, which is nine cents more expensive than last month, but 26 cents cheaper than a year ago.

Most motorists around the country are seeing prices decline or stabilize, with the majority of states seeing gas prices decrease by as much as a nickel since last Monday.

But significant price jumps in California (+16 cents on the week) have pushed prices higher for motorists in the region, as gasoline stocks tighten along the West Coast.

“All regions are seeing planned and unplanned refinery maintenance, but it is only the West Coast that is really seeing gasoline stocks tighten and gas prices increase,” said Jeanette Casselano, AAA spokesperson. “On the whole, we are seeing gasoline demand mostly push lower amid stable, but healthy gasoline stock levels which are ultimately keeping prices cheaper for most motorists.”

Today, 51% of all gas stations in the country are selling regular unleaded for $2.50 or less, while 77% are selling for $2.75 or less.

The average price for a gallon of gas in California is currently $4.18.

Momosfriend October 7, 2019 - 4:18 PM - 4:18 PM

Oh that’s right the Gov’nor gets a free car and gas on tax payers dime. Nothing to see here folks. Just the regular fleecing of hard working Californians.

ON DA October 7, 2019 - 10:23 PM - 10:23 PM

Really? My watch must be running fast!

jon October 8, 2019 - 4:49 AM - 4:49 AM

when you buy garbage gas,you don’t save money by destroying your car.Theres a reason that gas is so cheap. It is the lowest quality your car can barely run on,and won’t run for long using that.

concord ygnacio October 8, 2019 - 8:10 AM - 8:10 AM

Agreed. I would never buy low grade gas that Bonfare sells. Only Top Tier for me (Costco, ARCO, Shell, Chevron, Texaco, Valero, and Sinclair in this area).

The rest of the country benefits from American ingenuity and energy independence. Meanwhile California is almost totally dependent on Middle Eastern oil thanks to pressure from “environmentalists” who refuse to allow modern oil drilling in California or rail lines to transport in domestic oil. On top of that we have a governor and legislature which loathes the middle and working class and punishes with punitive taxes the peons who must drive to work every day.

We left last week and couldn’t be happier with our decision! CA isn’t what it once was…

burnbabyburn October 8, 2019 - 4:57 AM - 4:57 AM

Climate change (wording changes every couple of years) is the reason most stated for the special gas blends in ca. That, plus high gas taxes, are the main reasons for the high cost of gas in this state. Instead of reducing the main cause of greenhouse gases (human beings), the progressives want to go 100% green electricity, which will give the goverment even more control over our lives. I propose a more realistic approach. “Plant one/Eliminate one”. For every tree you plant, you eliminate one useless human (child molester, elder abuser, rapist, etc.) Then you grind them up, and use them as a food source. Problems solved. Thank you and “you’re welcome”.

California is an expensive place to live in. Just like many cities in CA is expensive to live in..

The great thing is no one has to stay in California – folks are free to move to whichever state they want.

The Fractionator October 8, 2019 - 5:40 AM - 5:40 AM

Just got back from Florida and gas ranged from $2.29 to $2.49 a gallon for regular. Remember folks ya gots to pay taxes, taxes and more taxes for driving in this Liberal Loving State!

Well Folksell October 8, 2019 - 9:05 AM - 9:05 AM

Last week KTVN – Reno report part of the price issue is due to the fact that several So Cal refineries are off-line. Why are they off-line? Hmmmmm……price manipulation by greedy big oil?

The Wizard October 8, 2019 - 10:36 AM - 10:36 AM

This is the prime time for refinery turnarounds for maint. The weather is usually good at this time and it’s before the big holidays. Got do do the maint. to avoid a big boom, if you know what I mean.

burnbabyburn October 8, 2019 - 2:25 PM - 2:25 PM

Other refineries go off-line for turnarounds in other parts of the country, but they don’t affect gas prices like they do here in cali. Hmmmmm……stupid politicians and voters?

The Wizard October 8, 2019 - 2:39 PM - 2:39 PM

Other areas have a lager selection of Refinery’s in other states to back fill demand . Here in California we have that special gas that we only make.

The Mamba October 8, 2019 - 10:24 AM - 10:24 AM

I just got back from Vermont, you can fill up for $2.50 for regular there. It really highlighted how absolutely insane California is, that extra $1.70 flows through to every good and product we buy.

Bigjoker October 8, 2019 - 10:44 AM - 10:44 AM

Last year, California raised its excise taxes on motor fuels. The tax on gasoline increased from 34.7 cents per gallon to 46.7 cents per gallon (and it increased another 1 cent per gallon this year). The tax on diesel fuel increased from 34 cents to 67 cents per gallon. Vehicle registration fees also were raised. The CA government is who is gouging you!

Ca to Tx October 8, 2019 - 11:29 AM - 11:29 AM

I paid $2.12 in Texas this morning.
