Spare The Air Alert Issued For Sunday

by CLAYCORD.com

A short hot spell in the forecast, combined with car exhaust, has prompted air district officials to issue a Spare the Air alert for smog on Sunday.

The air pollution alert is the 18th sent out in 2019 by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

Officials hope it the alert will encourage residents to find alternatives to driving.

“Vehicle exhaust is the largest source of air pollution during periods of warm weather,” said Jack Broadbent, executive officer of the air district. “Reducing driving will improve air quality and protect the climate.”

A high-pressure system moving into the region is expected to bring light winds and higher temperatures on Sunday. Those conditions, along with motor vehicle exhaust, will lead to elevated concentrations of ozone, or
smog, district officials said.

This is a crock. They even admit that it will be windy tomorrow. Broadbent keeps trying to be relevant… sorry, Jack, you failed again! Still gonna run my errands tomorrow!!!!

Vehicle exhaust???

I would say Commercial airliners, Railroads and Ships are the biggest offenders.

No teeth in summer STA alerts = no compliance. Humans do not willingly alter their behavior, especially selfish Americans who think they are God’s gift to the Earth. Hint: we’re not!

Rollo Tomasi October 6, 2019 - 4:51 PM - 4:51 PM

You’re right John P. Americans and the rest of the human race are akin to nothing more than a virus afflicting the planet. The earth is going to do earth things, and nothing we do, or don’t do, is going to make a damn bit of difference.

Gasoline-powered leaf blowers produce emissions of nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons, which can form smog. They also emit carbon monoxide, air toxics, and greenhouse gases, and they stir particles into the air, contributing to particle pollution.
Please be considerate of the air we are forced to breathe together

Much like the boy who cried wolf, not very many people change their routines for these STA days.

All the years of dire warnings and people don’t change.

I feel sorry for the people with breathing issues. The warnings do give them a chance to plan ahead.

It is important to do our part to make our air clean. I know of a person who was very sick with COPD. He could do nothing to plan ahead. He was already on oxygen too. Smoke from wood burning fireplaces made him suffer even more. There are people on this thread proudly saying they were going to have their fireplaces roaring and also do nothing to try to keep our air clean. They don’t understand the bad air is like a cover so the particulates and crud in the air is trapped. Ignorance and arrogance seem to prevail.

I have been observing traffic for a few months. Maps, and just general looking. Weekends have been a lot quieter, especially on the freeways. Even San Jose arteries are quieter So, it is not automobiles. More likely air traffic and leaf blowers. and those older dirty trailers hauling who knows what.

Why did they choose Sunday?

Captain Bebops October 6, 2019 - 9:30 AM - 9:30 AM

I’ll have to see i the farmer’s market is less busy today. Probably not. Most people don’t know about these alerts anyway. And besides many simply cannot afford to observe them. California is a car centric state and made that way by the automakers.

S October 6, 2019 - 12:44 PM - 12:44 PM

wonder if the alert is ever lifted or reversed??? Seems pretty breezy and fresh outside to me….

Gittyup October 6, 2019 - 1:31 PM - 1:31 PM

It doesn’t seem like a STAD at all out there today. I had no choice, I had to go to the store. if it really is a STAD, I usually come home coughing and wheezing … and I didn’t. It’s also not as hot today as they have been predicting all week, which might have something to do with whether it is really a STAD or not.

Silva October 6, 2019 - 3:04 PM - 3:04 PM

My chest usually predicts STADs long before I get the phone call announcement from the BAAQD. I’m outside enjoying moderately good air today. No wheezing!

S October 6, 2019 - 4:06 PM - 4:06 PM

and another tomorrow… glad I’ve plenty of tri-tip left….
