A 38-year-old Hayward man was killed in a vehicle collision on I-680 near Treat Blvd. in Walnut Creek this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP says it was determined that a Nissan Sentra had collided with a dump truck, then subsequently rolled, collided with the concrete center wall, and sustained major damage.
The solo male driver of the Nissan was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The solo adult male driver of the dump truck was not injured.
The preliminary investigation indicates the driver of the Nissan was traveling southbound on I-680 and for unknown reasons veered the Nissan across the lanes and collided into the back of the dump truck. Then due to the impact, the Nissan rolled and collided into the concrete center wall and sustained major damage, partially trapping the driver inside.
Once the Fire Department and emergency personnel arrived, the driver was extricated from the Nissan but was pronounced deceased on scene.
It appeared that the driver was not wearing his seatbelt, the CHP said.
The CHP says although alcohol bottles were located in the Nissan, it is unknown at this time if alcohol and/or drugs played a role in this collision.
If anyone witnessed this collision or the Nissan on I-680 prior to this crash, please contact Contra Costa CHP at 925-646-4980.
Damn it!!! Who in their right mind doesn’t wear seat belts.
Someone from Hayward I guess..There are certain people that feel that wearing a seat belt is being told what to do.They won’t be pushed around by ‘the man’
Start wearing a helmet too
Sheeesh this stuff is nuts
Case in point, always wear your seatbelt.!
Or, you know, don’t drive drunk…
@Bob Foo
Where does it mention alcohol was a factor in the accident and death? Let’s stop assuming unless you have first hand knowledge.
I find it difficult to imagine a situation where someone would have “alcohol bottles” in the cab of their vehicle. There was a reason that CHP made a point of mentioning it. If the booze bottles were sealed, even if they broke in the accident the seals on the caps would be intact.
Seatbelt could have unhinged in a traumatic accident like that..
Very sad. My Condolences to his family 🙁
oh please…. could is an optional word…. It could not have unhinged as well.
Have a little compassion. Someone just lost their life in a unfortunate accident.
Everyone comes on here thinking they know it all.
RIP and my deepest condolences to their family.
what ive noticed is large majority of people coming from hwy 4 traveling west from east county don’t wear thier seat belts, but then if the name is mentioned of who the victim was, people can kinda tell what area the person lived.I don’t make the rules, but people get upset when it turns out to be true,so sometimes they just won’t reveal the identity, becasue of so many”I told you so”Anyone acting like they don’t know what I mean, gowan…
If seat belt unhinged they would know- very telling red strap mark across chest…not having wait for bruises to appear. I know I have those images of the red strap mark burned in my memory from Driver’s Ed class in High School…dating myself there.
Drivers Ed. what was the name of that awful movie we all had to watch?
Red Asphalt movies one and two were gruesome ‘. They made you think and showed the worst decapitation in accidents
Red Asphalt?
Blood Alley?
The Terror of Highway 101?
Why is it so hard for people to have some class and sense when someone is killed? There’s always the ones who need to place blame, i.e., “they were prpbably texting/speeding/drunk.” Or, “why werent they wearing a seatbelt?”
It doesnt matter. Not one bit. The person has passed away. They had people who loved them. If you cant be kind, then please be quiet.

Lecturing us shows your absence of class. If he was indeed texting, speeding, and/or drunk, then he put a lot of people at risk, and it does matter. And we will talk about it. Save your lectures for the people who tolerate and enable his bad behavior.
