Two inmates at the Martinez Detention Facility have been indicted on charges of attempted murder in a gang-related stabbing that happened in custody in May, Contra Costa County prosecutors said.

Brentwood resident Marco Salazar, 23, and 37-year-old Joseph Malfitano, from Sacramento, allegedly stabbed Edward Nachor in the neck on May 4. Nachor suffered serious injuries, but survived.

Salazar and Malfitano are also facing enhancements for street terrorism and allegedly committing the crime for the benefit of a street gang.

Salazar is being held on $2.16 million bail, and Malfitano is being held on no-bail status. The indictment against the defendants was unsealed in a Martinez courtroom Monday morning.

Simply put there are some people that just don’t belong on this Earth.

No more Hilton Hotel Jails … these losers get food, bedding, medical, dental, prescription drugs, cable TV, games, hang out with their friends, work out, learn how to commit different crimes etc…. Jail time needs to be a deterrent to criminals rather than a trip to club med. Theses inmates broke laws against me and now I have to pay for their vacation? Something is wrong… theses criminals need to right their wrongs. Bring back chain gangs and labor camps. MCGA

Jails have become more violent due to Felons who used to go to state prisons being housed at county level. Overcrowding caused by housing convicted felons in turn causes misdemeanor criminals to be released early.

“Under AB 109 mandates, certain “low-level” felonies would require incarceration in county jails, as opposed to state prisons.” …

“Prop. 47, AB 109, and the already overcrowded county jail system has created a ‘perfect storm,’ where criminals know they will not be held in county jail for any significant time.”
