$7.5M Federal Grant Awarded For Autonomous Vehicle Projects In Contra Costa County

The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a $7.5 million grant to support three autonomous vehicle demonstration projects as part of an Automated Driving System pilot program in the East Bay, according to the
Contra Costa Transportation Authority.

Two of the projects will focus on helping the elderly.

Those include a “shared autonomous vehicle” project to provide first-mile and last-mile access to public transit for the elderly in Walnut Creek as well as a wheelchair-accessible and on-demand autonomous shuttle to transport people to and from medical facilities in Martinez.

Data gathered from both projects will be used to develop performance and safety measures, according to the CCTA.

Countywide, they’ll also be installing vehicle-to-infrastructure and vehicle-to-vehicle communications technology along the Interstate Highway 680 corridor to facilitate the use of “connected autonomous vehicles” in
highway traffic.

“The ADS program is based on the actual needs and concerns of the community searching for solutions to mobility challenges,” CCTA Executive Director Randell Iwasaki said in a statement Wednesday. “We need to integrate advanced technologies, innovative solutions, new partnerships and creative ideas to support the next generation of mobility.”

The Contra Costa Transportation Authority is a public agency that oversees transportation efforts and manages the county’s transportation sales tax. More information is available online at www.ccta.net.

Well wow
I see no mention of catering to what the people want
Like criminal access or illegals
And since these vehicles will be made of plastic well the anti brigade will be all over it
As for the politicians they get no cut from lugging old people around
Unless pelosi is the one they have to share their ride with

As well a socialist communist society does not require or have the means to use such a system as socialist walk or ride bikes

So who actually benefits from millions the democrat leaders say we don’t have

It’s a literary style with which you apparently are not familiar. Maybe you need an adult ed class in popular literature.

But not all elderly have the ability to walk 2 miles one way. Also, what about when the weather is bad? Autonomous vehicles is going to give many freedoms back to the elderly who are unable to drive. That’s not even to mention that these vehicles will be safer.

Chicken Little September 23, 2019 - 12:19 PM - 12:19 PM

Uber or Lyft would give them the same freedoms.
