More Than 80,000 Kaiser Permanente Workers To Strike Nationwide Beginning Oct. 14

More than 80,000 Kaiser Permanente workers in six states and the District of Columbia will begin a nationwide, seven-day unfair labor practices strike Oct. 14.

The strike will be the largest since the Teamsters strike against United Parcel Service more than two decades ago.

Picket lines will be set up at Kaiser Permanente hospitals, medical office buildings and other facilities in California (including Walnut Creek), Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Jobs affected by the strike include optometrists, clinical laboratory scientists, respiratory and x-ray technicians, licensed vocational nurses, certified nursing assistants, surgical technicians, pharmacy technicians, phlebotomists, medical assistants and housekeepers, among hundreds of other positions.

its for the patients ….oh we want 8% raise and increased retirement
and less hours

Less and less people are going into nursing because of the lack of pay. See amazing nurses leaving the industry all together so they can support their families is a tragedy. I hope and pray you don’t need someone to care for you or a loved one and you get a nurse that’s been working six days and overtime and her eyes are all droopy and she’s tired. They may not be working overtime for the pay, maybe they’re working overtime because they don’t want to leave their patients alone

No how about they want to cut pay by 15%, get rid of our pension, cut vacation and sick time by 50%. And more. All this from a CEO that hust gave himself a multimillion dollor raise.

I’ll be honest. When we strike it’s all about the money!

Striking is a touchy subject, depending on the circumstances. But Kaiser has the dough to pay their people better. They are supposedly a “non-profit” but the amount of money they bring in above their costs is astronomical.

Don’t forget to figure in the lost wages while on strike. It’ll take many months or longer to make that up.

I’m getting so tired of this…its why I am leaving Kaiser when open enrollment comes around. I don’t know enough about what is being asked/demanded, and I am too tired to figure it out. I guess I’ll pay more somewhere else so I don’t have to deal with this headache…

Greedy Unions + Stingy Company = bad for everyone 👎👎👎

It’s not the workers that want to strike, it’s the unions that want the strike. The workers, the public etc, are being told by union folk what they want and what’s best for them. The unions want the power, the notoriety to say they got Kaiser to bow down to their demands. What exactly is the union saying is wrong? Why is the union calling the strike? We only know from what he hear on the radio and tv. What exactly are the unions demands? What does “unfair labor practice” really mean. It’s a bunch of BS that the union is throwing around. What Kaisers proposing is really good. The union wants more so they can say they didn’t back down, thus increasing their credibility, and increasing more interest in unions, so they can pay their coffers. “ See look what we got from Kaiser, we can get this for you too, just join our unions and see”. I can see the unions doing something like that.

unless you are locked out; just because you are in a union (many places are closed shops) does not mean you as an individual have to strike. Go to work…. Don’t let them bully you……

I worked in California Kaiser for 17 years then moved to Colorado Kaiser. We are in lay offs and it has been rough. It is s different region and have our own problems. I can say Kaiser has had the highest wages and best benefits. Kaiser California is the model and I agree with Jon Mischief about the union. drama. Kaiser as a company is strong and have to move with the time and market climate. Get out there and work and don’t be cry babies 😭

I work in a non-paid volunteer position at Kaiser. Speaking with the employees that I come in contact with it seems to me that they really aren’t thinking for themselves. The first thing that comes up when I inquire is money. We want money. Kaiser is making all this money and we want some of it. The other issues are complaints about co-pays going up. The reduction of vacation time for future employees. In reading the flyers that the union leaves laying around the offices I feel they are fueling the fear for their own personal benefits. Don’t get me wrong, I believe we need unions because if we didn’t have them we would need them to control corporate greed. However I feel Kaiser’s union like many other large unions are in business for themselves and not the people they represent.

Kaiser has begun to outsource and would like to outsource more in the future… leaving peoples job security in the air. After gardeners were outsourced, many other people are in fear of their job and pay, such as housekeeping, LVN’s, and registration clerks. They also want to make changes to pensions, benefits, and lower new hire’s pay by 15%. It’s unfortunate people think that we are striking to get MORE money, when in fact we are striking to maintain what we have already.

You’re not going to get much sympathy here. You can always look to find employment elsewhere.

S… Not looking for sympathy, simply trying to educate. It’d be nice to keep our pensions, health benefits, and have job security… considering we keep people from dying and all on a daily basis 🙂
