Sears Holdings is closing 100 more Sears and KMart stores throughout the country.
Sears Holdings hasn’t released an updated list on expected closures, so it’s currently unknown if the Sears store in Concord’s Sunvalley Mall and the KMart on Clayton Rd. in Concord will close.
This upcoming round of closures leaves the company with just 300 Sears and Kmart stores combined.
QUESTION: When the Concord Kmart on Clayton Rd. closes, which many are saying is only a matter of time, what would you like to see replace the long-time tenant?
WinCo or Walmart.
Winco would be awesome!!!
Wouldn’t be allowed in same shopping center as another grocery store, Lucky.
Isn’t foodmax on clayton equivalent to winco?
Concord needs more stores that will bring people from walnut creek and pleasant hill to spend money. A target wouldn’t be bad, but wc and phill have those already. Not really big enough for a Lowes or home depot, but those seem like decent choices also. It could simply be torn down and redeveloped into more outdoor mixed shopping.
@ Kevin, I think they are the same premise with Winco being employee owed… I have been to several of both stores… I like Winco better….
Lucky (I’ve forgotten the name of whoever owns them now) owns FoodMaxx. FoodMaxx was/is the Lucky “discount” store.
I vote for Winco also, essentially a Safeway with much lower prices. Clean and well lit, not like a warehouse type store. Produce quality is slightly below Safeway but good if you know how to pick and choose, and what to do with it when you get home. They have a gigantic bulk food area. In my opinion the house brand stuff doesn’t always measure up.
The world’s biggest Olive Garden.
Here! Here!
Target
Also I can’t believe the Clayton Rd Kmart has lasted this long. I go there once I a while for work clothes and they rarely ever have anything on the shelves.
It’s so empty I don’t know how it is still open.
When you need a last minute birthday present or something for a party and don’t want to hit 500 stoplights on YVR, K-Mart is the place to go.
I agree, Steve. The only time I go to that K Mart is when I am shopping for a kid’s birthday party. They don’t care where the toy comes from.
I remember when they used to have mechanics working there.
Walmart would be a nice replacement. I am sure our wonderful elected officials would prefer to see housing on it.
Low rent housing at that! Or wait, maybe we can fit another soccer field in there!
Strip Club
Multi-level strip club?
I like your thinking
Definitely an 18,000 seat soccer stadium!
Super 99Cent store. They can close a couple of the nearby regular 99cent stores or move them to WC, where we desperately need one.
a mattress store
Here’s a list I found for California.
Clayton road get spared once again…
California
Carlsbad Sears: 2561 El Camino Real
Eureka Sears: 3300 Broadway
Lakeport Kmart: 2019 S Main St.
North Hollywood Kmart: 13007 Sherman Way
Oakdale Kmart: 175 Maag Ave.
Salinas Kmart: 1050 N. Davis Rd.
Tehachapi Kmart: 710 W. Tehachapi Blvd.
Yay, I hope that list is correct!
Un-Dress Barn
Dress Barn is closing all stores and going out of business.

HA!
Well, alrighty, then!
I guess I can’t sneak one by you.
Is there enough room for an IKEA?
Lowe’s or Home Depot…or another OSH. Since OSH closed it’s quite the hike to get hardware.
I agree with you!
Ace is just down the road near Food Maxx and they have helpful, knowledgeable staff.
“Ace is the place” 😊
When will Sun Valley Mall include housing? Because it will. Eventually.
Now thats where they can put an Ikea!
If they want people to go there they should mirror the Veranda center.
Sprouts- it will give Lucky a run for it’s money. Target would be another good alternative.
Not Sprouts! Worst place ever. Spoiled/wilted produce. Lousy pre-made salads, sandwiches, etc. selection. Maybe a Whole Foods. The soccer stadium would be better suited here than on Monument. We defended one somewhere close.
A combination marijuana dispensary and bakery.
Sportsman’s Warehouse
Target
They are all going away eventually…less than 5 years it’s all gone. Eddie Lampert has run the business into the ground.
It would be awesome if a Walmart or Target could replace it!
Target!!!!
Sprouts
Trader Joe’s
Roller rink
Walmart
Target
A corn snake sanctuary!
Here! Here!
While we’re at, what will replace Sears at SunValley Mall? It’s only a matter of time for them too before they get axed (Antioch already has).
I can’t believe they haven’t opened a trader joe’s Yet!!!
TARGET!!
Indoor gun range/ Survivalist store.
I’d like something more interesting and different than more of the same big box chain stores that are all over the place everywhere already like Walmart and Target, and Lowe’s and Home Depot. I don’t know what that would be, but all the same stuff everywhere is already so old. It’d be wonderful if we could have a Yardbirds or an OSH again, we do need more hardware. A super Long’s like the one they had on Pleasant Valley Road in Oakland, or a Simon(!!!) would be a dream.
I miss Simon’s like no other former store. They were really the greatest.
They really were, CoCoOld. Sigh.
A roller rink or a kart racing place.
Seriously, I don’t know. It would be nice to make Clayton Road less of a strip-mall pedestrian-fatality wasteland, but that can’t be done by repurposing this site alone.
Wal-Mart. . Winco. Target . Better business going bring for the community and to the city of concord
Winco would be Great for the area. Huge selection and affordable
A fishing store [ bass pro shop
Walmart will allow the Salvation Army kettle Santa at Christmas time like Kmart does. Target kicked Santa to the curb over a decade ago.
So YES to Walmart. NO to Target.
👍
I’ve been working on other closed down sears and kmarts and they have been splitting the space up to multiple businesses and I’ve done a lot of work for Ross/dd’s. So I won’t be surprised if they throw a dds store in there and a few others.
No Walmart. How about a Sweet Tomatoes.
Sweet Tomatoes is so bland.
A giant hobby shop.
Tractor Supply.
Love the Tractor supply idea!!!
ANYTHING BUT A RETAIL ESTABLISHMENT. People you don’t need to buy more crap, or be near a place that sells crap…..
Your definition of crap, might not be the same as someone else’s. And who are you to decided that people don’t need to buy more crap. Fact is people need to eat, most of us need furniture at some point in our life, most also replace furniture now and then, or add to what they have.
Also most singles and families also will most likely buy some kind of sports equipment, a bike, running shoes, skies etc.
A homeless navigation center!
Harbor Freight
Target or Walmart so we don’t have to drive 20 minutes to the nearest one!!! I second the roller skating rink. Maybe OSH building can become a Rockin’ Jump. Also, the Dickey’s should be replaced with Chipotle.
People seriously asking for a Wal-Mart!! Clearly must be renters because nobody that owns property in Concord would want a Wal-Mart. Thats the biggest hit to property values you can take from a store. Not to mention they are just plain bad for communities no matter how many cute commercials they put on TV. YUCK I’d take anything other than a Wal-Mart.
I agree with you 100%. A Walmart will bring down the value of homes in the area.
@ConcordDad – Homeowner here…and a fan of Walmart. Concord is working class and people like to save $$$. Their product quality is actually a notch above Target, from what I have observed.
VANS indoor skatepark. That allows bikes.
Surround by $.5-1 million dollar homes and they struggle. That’s not economics, that’s poor management.
Those homeowners didn’t shop at K Mart and they won’t shop at Walmart, Target, Sears, or any other “working man’s” store. Times have changed and so has Concord. More upscale commuters – hence, the million dollar homes.
Something recreational like others have suggested… Maybe a Lucky Strike bowling alley and a nice brewpub restaurant?
We have a bowling alley a block away. That won’t work. But a brew pub. Now your talking!!! I like the Target idea.
IMAX Theater
Target!!! 🎯
Tear it down, build high density luxury housing with 1st floor retail with shops, market, coffee. It’s right on the bus line so it’s a perfect spot to start gentrifying this end of Clayton road.
Bingo you win! That is exactly what they will do.
That is most likely, but anyone paying for a luxury condo isn’t going to want to ride the bus around there.
Target or home depot
Target, Trader Joe’s or a hardware store. Not a store that will bring down the value of this area
Target!
Walmart pls!!
A Target or Best Buy
The building might be to big but I’d like to see a new steak restaurant go in there. Something like a “Cattleman’s” or, since they closed in PH, a “Black Angus.”
No to Walmart! Target, it’s a pain to drive to WC or PH. WinCo Yes!
Smaller shops with a Trader Joe’s. Heard they looked out here before and decided not enough interest though.
The company that operates Sears/K-Mart no longer has to publicize which stores are closing as they’re now a private company. I was reading last week, that the bulk of the next 100 store closings would be K-Mart. The only way to find out now is if a store is closing would be if the employees post online it’s their store that is closing.
When you think about it, the whole chain is in trouble of closing at some point. There are some smaller Sears stores that are targeting niche offerings that could potentially survive. I think K-Mart will fold first. It’s been in trouble for a LONG time.
As far as the K-Mart location in Concord, I think somewhat small for a Target, but it would be GREAT if they put one there. I can’t see a hardware store moving in, when several have closed down the street (Yardbirds, Osh, et al). Do we really need another grocery store? Aldi would be interesting if they expanded to our territory, but as others have said, two grocery stores in the same place is highly unlikely. In theory it could be converted to a niche Sears selling beds and hardware, but who knows…
Sun Vallley Sears will be one of the last to close. That store and the land it sits on is owned by Sears, not leased. They’re closing all the leased stores first to get out from under the expensive leases. All that’s left of value in Sears is the real estate. They’ll keep the owned stores open and keep consolidating. Sears owns their store and most of the south end of the Sun Valley parking lot.
That spot is too big for a movie theater alone…. let’s add an Outback Steakhouse too.
Divide the space for outlet stores.
Walmart stores can be a drain on local police: https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016-walmart-crime/
Target would be a much better fit.
Furniture store
I say zero chance of a supermarket in that space, there’s already 4 on upper Clayton Rd.
Right, and it’s just two doors down from Lucky.
OOOooo. Better yet… BR-549
Target or Whole Foods would increase all of our homes values, why wouldn’t we want that? Walmart is not that much more affordable than Target and we need “classier” shops around here. Everything is so desolate and an eye sore.
I would love to see a reasonably priced indoor shooting range
Awww the memories
Wal-Mart would be great
Walmart supercenter
