A pipe bomb was found in Martinez today.

At about 11:30, a resident in the 2300 block of Wayne St. reported finding a pipe bomb on his property. He moved the device to the street and called police.

Members of the Walnut Creek Police Department Bomb Squad responded, and they determined it was an active explosive device. They rendered it safe by a controlled detonation. Additional black powder was also rendered safe, according to police.

It’s unknown how long the device was at that location. Police said they have no suspects at this time.

dude shouldn’t have even touched it; let alone move it.

But Dad, it looked like fun on the video game!

He’s lucky to be alive.

Moved it? Seriously? Bet he feeds baby bears and looks for gas leaks with a lighter too.

My cousin Stumpy did that once.

Put it out in the street, glad I was not driving by.

A friend of mine shot and killed a guy with a pipe bomb……..108RS

How do you shoot a pipe bomb?

As usual Dr. Jelly…hilarious

Well played Jelly 😀

While still on active duty in the Army, my dad once found a pipe bomb in the front yard of our Clayton home. We lived in a neighborhood with two Municipal Court Judges, and one Superior Court Judge which may have explained it as a case of mistaken identity. Or, maybe not. We don’t know for sure. Anyway, he wrapped it in an Army blanket and put it in the trunk of the car and drove it to work with him over Kirker Pass to Camp Stoneman.

At the Camp Stoneman gate, he informed the guard. The guard called Artillery who told them both to stand well clear of the car and wait until they got there. Artillery arrived and took the pipe bomb out of the trunk. Later that day they called my dad over to watch them detonate it. Apparently, the explosion was very impressive.

It was a fearless thing for him to do, but, of course, I wouldn’t ever recommend it. In the late 1950s, however, there weren’t Bomb Squads responding to such things. Additionally, Clayton relied on the Sheriff’s Department for police services which usually meant they had to come all the way from Martinez.

He moved the device to the street and called police?? I bet I wouldn’t have done that.
