California’s redistribution of wealth program at work…

Barbosa August 13, 2019 - 10:16 AM - 10:16 AM

Since most (if not all) the Apple store robbery suspects we’ve seen seem to fit a certain profile, would it be appropriate for security to closely monitor patrons entering the store that fits this profile? Probably not, huh?

CommonSense August 13, 2019 - 11:36 AM - 11:36 AM

Been saying it for awhile. Start profiling(that goes for all races).Everyone does it anyway. And there’s a reason we all do it

ZZ August 13, 2019 - 11:36 AM - 11:36 AM

Nope, no profiling allowed. That’s racist or sexist or whatever they want to call it. We’re the bad guy, not them.

Steve August 13, 2019 - 11:50 AM - 11:50 AM

You would think, but if its “official” then Apple would be racist, bet they will just keep letting stuff get stolen and jack up prices even more.

concord ygnacio August 13, 2019 - 1:14 PM - 1:14 PM

No, the Apple store burglary suspects do not fit any profile.

What you propose is stereotyping, and is wrong.

Rollo Tomasi August 13, 2019 - 1:29 PM - 1:29 PM

These proposals are in line with statistics.

Gittyup August 13, 2019 - 2:00 PM - 2:00 PM

@convord ygnacio When was the last time you saw white girls doing this?

Frances August 13, 2019 - 2:34 PM - 2:34 PM

For sure. Lol. No law suits there for racial profiling.

Claycord Native August 13, 2019 - 2:43 PM - 2:43 PM

By your logic, all white males should be evaluated before being let into festivals/shopping malls/schools/parks/etc., since most domestic terrorists and mass shooters fit that profile.

Do you now see how silly your statement is now? Racism is not the answer here.

Ridgewalker August 13, 2019 - 5:07 PM - 5:07 PM

Nothing wrong with profiling. They do it on Law & Order right:>

CommonSense August 13, 2019 - 5:17 PM - 5:17 PM

@Claycord Native. Yes, since the majority of mass shootings are white males they should be profiled before as such. Not everything is racism, it’s simple profiling for statistical reason.

Barbosa August 13, 2019 - 7:14 PM - 7:14 PM

@Claycord Native–
If I was at a mall and I see a white guy wearing a maga hat and a black trench coat, yeah I’d want someone to keep an eye on him and I’d get as far away as possible.

Rollo Tomasi August 13, 2019 - 9:49 PM - 9:49 PM

@Claycord Native:

Are white males committing those crimes disproportionately?

Cncpt August 15, 2019 - 7:21 AM - 7:21 AM

Since most (if not all) mass shootings in america suspects fit a certain profile, would it be appropriate for America to monitor patrons? Probably not, huh?

Commonsensenor August 13, 2019 - 10:36 AM - 10:36 AM

This continues to happen for one very simple reason. There are no consequences. If the DA actually charges anyone, it will be reduced to an infraction and a $28 fine, not even probation.

Until we actually enforce the law to the full extent of punishment, these smash and grabs will continue. And Apple doesn’t care, that’s why your $36 mfg cost phone sells for $1000.

Vote in people that support strict punishment and support law enforcement and enforcing laws.

Captain Bebops August 13, 2019 - 11:16 AM - 11:16 AM

iPhones cost so much because iPhone users will overpay and Apple knows that. Also a Windows laptop with the same specs as a MacBook Air will cost about 1/3 the price of the Air.

And prices of technology are going up due to Donny’s tariffs though he is delaying his latest round which will effect tech.

TOB August 13, 2019 - 11:43 AM - 11:43 AM

@Captain

You make a false claim which was just in news recently. iPhones are worth more used than any other phone. Samsung admits they pay more to buy back iPhones not due to marketing but because they are worth more. Don’t believe me, look for the article was only 2-3-4 weeks ago. Can’t speak for MacBook would agree with you there.

I think 16 iPhones exceeds 950.00 slap on the hand.

JPB August 13, 2019 - 12:34 PM - 12:34 PM

Agreed, Apple will charge whatever they want and people will pay it because it says Apple even though there are better choices for less

Chicken Little August 13, 2019 - 12:56 PM - 12:56 PM

@TOB,
The Cap’n didn’t make a false claim at all. Apple phones are “worth” more because people will pay more for them. Not because they’re actually better in any way.

Captain Bebops August 13, 2019 - 4:30 PM - 4:30 PM

@TOB, my Apple certified refurbished iPhone cost a little over $150 and is a 64GB model. I use it only for iOS development but was surprised that it’s wireless reception about as weak as my old Google Nexus phone. My Moto G4 cost less than $200 new and much better reception.

The Wizard August 13, 2019 - 10:38 AM - 10:38 AM

concord ygnacio August 13, 2019 - 1:16 PM - 1:16 PM

Gittyup August 13, 2019 - 2:04 PM - 2:04 PM

Right, driving the price up for everyone. But, what the heck, these could be Obama’s daughters just like the young men robbing convenience stores could be Obama’s sons.

If the Owners of retail business even cared about crime they would hire armed Security Guards, just like responsible Banks and Credit Unions .

Aunt Barbara August 13, 2019 - 12:22 PM - 12:22 PM

They had Walnut Creek Police there for a long time watching and also security after the drive thru smash and grabs. then like everyone does they let their guard down, thinking those silver posts outside will keep it from happening again.
It’s sad because Sunday I saw a similar group with overflowing huge tattered GAP shopping bags put in their trunks in the Broadway Plaza garage. Knowing profiling is not allowed, I had to look away and just grimace.

Momosfriend August 13, 2019 - 4:19 PM - 4:19 PM

Correct. Apple invites this behavior by not stoping or securing their property.
Apple’s reply is oh well. As soon as you turn on the phone we’ll find it.
EXCEPT.
Those phones are jail broke or sold to folks who can jail break the phone then it’s open market.
You stamp out crime with good security and prosecution. Apple does neither. Local PD can only react to crimes not prevent them all.

palermo August 13, 2019 - 11:09 AM - 11:09 AM

Once they all discovered Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, all of this started. Why not, nothing will happen to any of them and the rest of us suckers can pay twice as much next time

It might sound time consuming, but unless they get punished for their crimes, they’ll just do it again.

Does the Apple store no longer use such officers for security protection?

AuntBarbara August 13, 2019 - 4:49 PM - 4:49 PM

The Mayor invited all the homeless in DOWNTOWN and did not think of all the problems involved with that and now the police are overrun with calls.

I saw a car just like that, but it was two Sundays ago, the afternoon of August 4th. It was headed west on Mt. Diablo about 0.5 mi from the 24 entrance. I was waiting at a crosswalk, so I was able to observe it as it passed.

It was immediately strange that a crummy car was filled with people wearing sweatshirts. It was literally 90 degrees outside. With all the Teslas driving by, it stuck out like a big sore thumb.

Could’ve been an unrelated vehicle, but it shared all the similarities of the first photo in this article.

4th generation CCC August 13, 2019 - 2:31 PM - 2:31 PM

Well Random Task, it all started with President Reagan and his union busting concerning our Airport Flight Controllers and then came his trickle down theory so that CEO’s could make larger amounts of money and not get taxed heavily on it. With that the wages stayed stagnant while the CEO’s money increased. Then we no longer had stay at home mothers because it soon took two incomes to raise a family and the family suffered for it. And eventually over the years the cost of living kept going up while the wages stayed stagnant and children were left unsupervised and then boom increased poverty which leads to crime. People got to eat. Glorification of wealth on those reality shows. Then we get a young generation of youth who have no hope in owning a home because of low wages and extremely high priced housing. Of course there are the United States capitalists who have exploited other countries resources and now other people think they can be capitalists themselves so they come to America. Maybe people of color are fed up with the way they are disrespected by white people so they don’t really care if your iPhone price goes up and .25 cents. Be respectful to people and give them dignity and they are far more unlikely to do bad things.

Rollo Tomasi August 13, 2019 - 9:56 PM - 9:56 PM

Re: Claycord Native. Actually you are incorrect. Please read the following 2016 expose/article from the New York Times–a VERY left-leaning news source– regarding mass-casualty shootings. The author(s)/reporter(s) of this article state that 75% of ALL mass casualty shootings committed each year are done by blacks/African Americans, not whites. Whites ONLY constitute approximately 10% of all shootings. Sadly, black on black and black on white shootings and other crimes appear to be an epidemic with no end in sight. I simply wanted to clarify the facts verse the continual fiction we hear ad nauseam via the talking heads in mainstream news and from MOST politicians.

JWB August 13, 2019 - 5:39 PM - 5:39 PM

I’m not sure what NYT article you reference in your post but here is some data on mass-casualty shootings which do not support your statement.

Rollo Tomasi August 13, 2019 - 10:28 PM - 10:28 PM

@JWB:
I was searching for the methodology and criteria used in compiling those statistics you linked, then saw the source was Mother Jones, so I had myself a chuckle and decided to take a quick look anyway just for s**ts and giggles.
Even if I accept the methodology and criteria used, a cursory glance reveals that whites – at ~62% of the population – committed 56% of the subject crimes. Blacks – at ~13% of the population – committed 17% of the subject crimes.

JWB August 14, 2019 - 9:56 AM - 9:56 AM

@ Rollo

First I think statistics is a poor way of trying to address very complex questions with many underlying factors. For example as you can see the numbers of incidents are not that large (obviously I don’t mean to diminish them either). I don’t know about the geographical distributions of the incidents. So your conclusions are useless.

The only reason I provided the original link was because a previous poster referred to an alleged article in the NYT saying that “75% of all mass shootings each year are committed by a certain ethnicity” The numbers in my link do not support this.

Definition of fallacy, courtesy of Merriam-Webster

Just read your 10:28 posting again … and you may figure it out.

I give you a hint, what you claimed in that post is disproportionate to what you now want it to claim.

Rollo Tomasi August 15, 2019 - 8:37 AM - 8:37 AM

@JWB:

No conclusions were drawn. I used the overly simple (Mother Jones, you know) numbers from your link to calculate the rate at which two populations commit a certain crime. Statistics are just numbers, as are percentages. So again, what conclusions did YOU draw that you’d like to project on me?

For the last 3 months or so, UPS drivers delivering to cell phone stores located by freeway on-ramps have been getting assaulted and robbed. No description of the perpetrators or their vehicle have been given out to the other drivers. All they have been told is to be aware of their surroundings. hey 4th gen
you conveniently forgot about prop 13 …..that started the schools downfall since what 40% of funding disappeared …..because people without kids were pissed off they had to pay for schools …wonder how those neighborhoods are now ….and how those children are ….after being de funded

now they are defunded in favor of illegals ….

also so who says young people cant afford homes …I beg to differ and am sure many can contest that lots of young people have bought homes ….
wow

you also went on about how cost of living goes up and pay does not
here we go …..if your means can not be met by your current job then grow some and get a new job …there are single women with no baby daddy and kids… these women work 2 jobs an do schooling and become professionals and yes buy homes

you must be in favor of getting a high wage for pizza delivery so you can buy a home right ….or fast food work so you can keep up with cost of living
lol

apparently you forgot over 4 generations that this is the country of opportunity …you have the same opportunity to further yourself just like everyone else ….or are you pro socialism and everyone makes nothing and lives in huge high-rise apartments furnished by the gov ….seriously

I am only pointing out the huge problems …and yet most only react with a dem agenda line or poor me or why do they get more …rhetoric ….
buckle up because if your miffed now the future is going to finish you.

see dems are reactive ……and hard working people are proactive

simplify it for you
dem= hey i want more so the gov needs to force businesses to give me more money ….oops now I only work part time

hard working folks = hey I want more …so I will use programs or save up to get some schooling or special skills so I can make more money …oops now I have what I want ….

stop making excuses for everyone….so many oh the poor bums ….hey guess what bums have always been around its just fancy to care now but not do anything still ( hey if everyone who wants to help bums went out and made or bought bread or muffins and fed every last bum on the street …would that do it …would that get them off the street or how about your beloved dem gov giving bums 30,000 dollars each to support themselves …would that work
…but the same instance is yes there are some a small portion fairing bad times …we have hundreds of services and programs and have had them for years ….we even have fake bums working the freeway exits ….

why so many bums
why ? could it be bad schooling and passing failing students with the no child left behind …yeah just move them up and put them on the streets
you voted for that

why ? could it be that politicians sanctuary policies have driven them here

why ? because oh maybe they don’t want anything to do with society or their rules

why ? because all they want is drugs and booze

why? because the poor police who cant do their jobs because they are at the bottom and have to do what the city councils and fake mayors say

why? because the politicians and city councils got tired of having people complain about the bums and theft so they legalized theft and embraced bummage city wide ..you voted for that as well lol ….

people went crazy and ended plastic straws …yet a gov taking millions from school funding to directly support illegals and not a whisper …..

the loudest sound ever recorded was from a star billions of miles away
that took 100,000 years for us to hear

” … prop 13 …..that started the schools downfall since what 40% of funding disappeared …..because people without kids were pissed off they had to pay for schools …”

Not exactly. Proposition 13 introduced standards of practice for the collection of property taxes that did not previously exist. For one, it set a limit on how much they could be raised yearly.. It stemmed abuses by property tax collectors throughout the state who had shown favoritism in determining assessed valuation for their friends. Further, at the time, taxes collected locally might not find their way to local needs. It had far more beneficial effects for all California property owners that merely protecting the elderly from catastrophic increases which were common at the time. It was also felt that it limited the rampant growth which was overtaking the state. It stands today as the keystone of protection for the rights of property owners against the abuses of government.

Get Off My Lawn August 14, 2019 - 5:51 PM - 5:51 PM

Predictable virtue signaling by Concord Ygnacio at every opportunity. To summarize:
– Homeless people are an under appreciated asset to the community and if you don’t like them you are a terrible person.
– Criminals are all locals who are trying to turn their lives around.
– Police are racists and murderers
– Mark DeSaulnier is amazing and has really improved our lives
– Anyone who doesn’t vote progressive is a racist, sexist, bigot, homophobic, xenophobic nutter
– Guns are evil and could like totally be confiscated and no one would ever be murdered again
– Abortion is good
– Orange Man bad
– The electoral college should be abolished because Hillary didn’t win.

Did I miss anything? 🙄

Bike Store August 15, 2019 - 4:48 AM - 4:48 AM

I once owned a bike store in walnut creek by bart in 1997 next to the climbing store. One time some fine young youths from pittsburg rode bart to WC so that they could do some summer shopping in town. Which included grabbing as much as they could carry as they ran out the door. Unfortunately they were unaware that the stealing from us was unacceptable. So we chased them down and kindly restrained them in the BART parking lot with my knee on their neck until the WC PD could arrive. Upon arrival i was informed by WC PD “what do you want us to do?” uuummm, i would like to press charges of theft. Well, since you got your stuff back, we are going to let them go? No, we chased them down and held them for you to enforce the laws of the state… Now it looks like their kids come to town to shop. What a GREAT PLACE.
