Black Angus Steakhouse announced today the permanent closing of its Pleasant Hill location.

The company is considering a relocation opportunity as a proposed hotel development continues to gain traction in the local community on the site of their current location.

“We have decided to stop operations at our Pleasant Hill location to take advantage of a potential relocation opportunity and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” said Chris Ames, CEO of Black Angus Steakhouse.

“We feel connected to our Pleasant Hill family and are actively pursuing other opportunities to continue servicing the area for years to come.”

Black Angus opened its Pleasant Hill location on October 16, 1975. Their nearby Brentwood, Dublin, and Vallejo locations remain open.

I got a solid qwatta’ that says they won’t be back to that immediate area…. I got a buffalo that says they’ll just wash their hands of it… I got a wheatback that says old Tahoe Joe’s building… I’d rather a Texas Roadhouse come…

Fed Up July 29, 2019 - 12:49 PM - 12:49 PM

Agreed….they will NOT relocate anywhere in CC County.

KassidiG July 29, 2019 - 11:47 AM - 11:47 AM

I wish they’d move to the old Tahoe Joe’s location.

Mary Fouts posted last week about the proposed Cambria Hotel Development: that was approved for the corner of Oak Park and N. Main Street. This was a done deal last May.

Wonder what will happen to our old friends at Joseph’s Lawnmower?

Thank you Mary Fouts.

Roz July 29, 2019 - 12:27 PM - 12:27 PM

Oh NO!! I hope not Joseph’s Lawnmower shop!
Haven’t gone to Black Angus in 15+ years, since my Hubby has mastered the Grill.

Mary Fouts July 29, 2019 - 1:06 PM - 1:06 PM

@Noj – You are welcome.

One thing – the Oak Park Blvd property that is part of the proposed Cambria Hotel Development is actually 1531 Oak Park Blvd, a building immediately adjacent to Joseph’s Lawnmower. Joseph’s address is 1551 Oak Park Blvd. I haven’t attended any hearings, but some time ago did read the documents on the city website about the proposed development. I do not recall any mention of purchasing Joseph’s Lawnmower property for the development.

I also hope that would not happen. Joseph’s Lawnmower is a gem of a local business. Jim and I have used their services/purchased items from them many, many times.

Way back around 1959 or 1960, we were students at Oak Park Elementary school (gone).

One day, because it was a real school, the students were let out for an hour to go and clean up litter and trash around the school property.

Two buddies and myself are cleaning the street down by Joseph’s Lawnmower and he walks out with three Cokes© and says thank you.

Those things you never forget. The old town sure has changed.

Yes Tahoe Joes would be a great location. But I will really MISS the tall private feeling booths! They should renovate Tahoe Joes for more large scale booths and bigger groups for dinner. Black Angus has a much better atmosphere because it isn’t like a big cafeteria!!

In favor say I July 29, 2019 - 2:42 PM - 2:42 PM

I agree
Recently there was someone that I heard backed out

Colleen July 29, 2019 - 12:29 PM - 12:29 PM

Why not relocate the Pleasant Hill Black Angus to the old Tahoe Joe’s a crossed from Sunvalley

Rose July 29, 2019 - 1:09 PM - 1:09 PM

According to someone who works at the Emeryville Black Bear Diner, they are looking into the former Tahoe Joe’s as a new location for them.

Bubbles July 31, 2019 - 1:23 AM - 1:23 AM

I’d like that location for a Black Bear, the one in Walnut Creek is so busy.

Maybe black Angus could take over the old Elephant Bar, That property is such an eye sore now.

mike favar July 29, 2019 - 1:20 PM - 1:20 PM

The Tahoe Joes spot would be good.

Bad Nombre July 29, 2019 - 1:29 PM - 1:29 PM

Maybe replace it with a Filipino joint. They could call it “Black Bangus”.

Yeah, I know it isn’t pronounced the same way.

Tracy July 29, 2019 - 1:52 PM - 1:52 PM

Well what do I do with my unused giftcard now?

Dixie July 29, 2019 - 2:49 PM - 2:49 PM

The city of Pleasant Hill is at it again. They got rid of Chevy’s and put in a hotel and now they’re getting rid of black Angus to put in another hotel. Neither of those investments helps the residents of the city of Pleasant Hill. It only brings in additional revenue for the city of Pleasant Hill. It sucks and they should be ashamed.

anon July 29, 2019 - 3:38 PM - 3:38 PM

Remember (City of PH) paid out about $1,000,000 for the gun lawsuit case that they lost…..what a joke

Mary Fouts July 29, 2019 - 5:35 PM - 5:35 PM

@Dixie – The city of Pleasant Hill did not get rid of either restaurant. Both restaurants closed on their own accord. And yes, hotels benefit the residents of PH with the sales and occupancy taxes they generate, and the people they employ.

Don’t like it? Get involved. Plenty of opportunities for public comments on this proposal.

Barlie July 29, 2019 - 3:02 PM - 3:02 PM

New hotels do help the residents of Pleasant Hill. Their revenue pays taxes etc. They bring in alot more revenue than the Black Angus did. That Black Angus was in desperate need of remodeling. It will stay in the area. Its a win win all the way around. I cant wait to go to the new location!!

Matt July 29, 2019 - 3:39 PM - 3:39 PM

The former Tahoe Joe’s location would be a perfect fit. Close to the other location and a lot more potential to be successful. However, if they don’t step up their game service wise it wont matter where they go.

Aunt Barbara July 29, 2019 - 4:07 PM - 4:07 PM

wherever they go they need to improve the food and service to STAY in business. Don’t hire slackers!

Kathy Smith July 29, 2019 - 5:44 PM - 5:44 PM

The last few times I went their food and service SUCKED.

J. July 29, 2019 - 8:06 PM - 8:06 PM

Every visit to B. A., I was accompanied at my booth by little Fruit Flies.

Dr. Jellyfinger July 29, 2019 - 9:02 PM - 9:02 PM

If you see fruit flies I would not order a mixed drink…. they love to climb into the booze bottles but the alcohol knocks ’em out and they wind up in the bottom of the bottle & eventually into the drinks.

Linda July 29, 2019 - 8:39 PM - 8:39 PM

I would, strongly, suggest the closed Tahoe Joe’s site on CC Blvd across from Sun Valley Shopping Center. (CC Blvd & Willow Pass) It is in a good location and set up as a restaurant. Sorry to hear that they are closing as we have gone there for many years.

Daniel Sullivan July 29, 2019 - 9:21 PM - 9:21 PM

More jobs lost.i worked for years at the former John Jawads Pioneer Inn.when we closed down after a forty year run it took the livelihood away from many long time service staff I wish Black Angus can relocate in Pleasent Hills Formor Tahoe joes.

Ancient Mariner July 29, 2019 - 11:50 PM - 11:50 PM

How about relocating to the old Elephant Bar location?

Duck July 30, 2019 - 4:07 AM - 4:07 AM

I can’t believe that place has stayed in business as long as it has, it’s been a dump since the 1980’s, let them go in piece. Speaking of piece, that’s where everyone went to try to get one, that and to buy an 8 ball of hubba. That’s the only thing the B.A was good for. Their food sucked and the restaurant was an outdated roach infestation. And I’m not talking about their employees or the clientele.

chalkboy8 July 30, 2019 - 10:39 AM - 10:39 AM

We never ate at this location because it was next to a funeral home.

Kathy July 30, 2019 - 12:50 PM - 12:50 PM

What is the attraction that PH needs another hotel? Are the other always sold out?

Bruce M July 30, 2019 - 5:06 PM - 5:06 PM

We ALWAYS. enjoyed Black Angus. Their steaks were delicious. Their warm brown bread scrumptious. Their ice cold salads really good. The large booth arrangement a pleasant seating. Their grilled artichoke appetizers out of this world! Please come back soon!

JustMe August 1, 2019 - 9:31 AM - 9:31 AM

I only started going to Black Angus for the past couple of years, and despite the long closure after the fire last July, I and my family have always enjoyed meals there. The decorum inside, cowboy western, was very outdated, and could have used an update. We were quite disappointed that after they re-opened NOTHING had changed inside. In fact, we were told the fire damage was minimal. Oddly, when they closed for repairs, there was a sign out front that said property for sale, so I’m guessing whoever owned the property intended to sell and was probably working towards that goal all along. I had contacted Black Angus corporate and they told me they were planning to re-open (at that time) but the for sale sign made that statement confusing. If they do re-locate, I’d be happy to continue to frequent them. They were busy most nights and there’s not a lot of places for steak. I really like their offerings. It wasn’t overly expensive and the food was accessible.

For me, Black Angus was our go to place for special occasions. Now that I have my birthday coming up, I really wanted to go there, but– this is now the second year, they’re closed on my birthday. Will have to go to Walnut Creek instead.

As far as a hotel being placed there, yawn. Isn’t there already one nearby?! In fact, several. Do that many people need a place to stay in that area?

It seems to me, many restaurants are closing all of the sudden. This is a shame…

Thomas datboy August 2, 2019 - 12:54 AM - 12:54 AM

This really gets my goose it’s here it’s gone it’s back. I liked taking my work pals here (weekend at Bernie’s style) good happy hr. It will be harder to lug them if they move to the old Tahoe Joe’s spot but better than nothing. Not liking it.

Ancient Flyer August 4, 2019 - 2:32 PM - 2:32 PM

It’s unfortunate that Pleasant Hill chose to built yet another useless hotel and close down one of the best steak houses in the area, with excellent service and reasonable pricing. Wherever BLACK ANGUS moves, I’ll be going there for one of their fine steak dinners!!!
