Air District Issues Spare The Air Alert For Today, Sunday

Air quality officials took the unusual step of declaring a two-day Spare the Air Alert due to sizzling temperatures expected around the region this weekend.

The high temperatures, along with light winds and exhaust from motor vehicles are expected to cause unhealthy ozone, or smog, levels in the Bay Area, according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

The alerts are the sixth and seventh Spare the Air Alerts for smog in 2019.

A persistent high-pressure system over the Pacific Southwest is driving temperatures higher, delaying ocean breezes and causing unhealthy air quality throughout the region, said air district officials.

Air district officials warn that ozone can cause throat irritation, congestion, chest pain, trigger asthma, inflame the lining of the lungs and worsen bronchitis and emphysema.

Long-term exposure to ozone can reduce lung function. Ozone pollution is particularly harmful for young children, seniors and those with respiratory and heart conditions. When a Spare the Air Alert is issued, outdoor exercise should be done only in the early morning hours when ozone concentrations are lower.

I saw this yesterday and had to laugh. There are no mandatory restriction and the Air Board takes no steps to help improve AQ. Add to their warning the fact that there’s a major drag race at Sonoma raceway that will go on despite its massive injection of foulness to the air Sonomans need to live. The refusal of humans to do what’s required just cracks me up.

I remember they had a spare the air day when the Blue Angles were flying. The show went on.

Why are gas powered leafblowers out blowing gas in the air on a day like this? Why do homeowners, businesses and Cities allow this to happen?
Wake up and smell the GAS !

Windy and white caps at the waterfront with people in their jackets. Blue skies overhead. These alerts are probably the result of a software algorithm based on the lack of rain to clear the air. I could see overcast north of the Strait.

Broadbent isn’t the boss of me.

I’ll do as I damn well please.

“brisk”????? or maybe “Brisket”! just took a 5 pounder out of the smoker at about half an hour ago…. About ready to slice it up……. YUUUUUUMMMMMmmmmmmmmmm…………..

Just read in SFGate that there is a wildfire in southern Oregon:

“Bay Area residents may catch the faint smell of smoke this weekend from a wildfire burning in southern Oregon.
Starting early Saturday evening, the Bay Area will see impacts from the 9000-acre Milepost 97 fire near Canyonville, Oregon, according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
The anticipated wildfire smoke prompted the air district to issue an air quality advisory through Sunday.
A Spare the Air Alert for unhealthy levels of smog is already place for the weekend, due to a combination of high temperatures, car exhaust and light winds.
The Oregon fire is producing smoke that’s moving both over the Pacific Ocean and into the Central Valley, air district officials said.
Impacts in the Bay Area will be minimal from the smoke, and there may be hazy conditions and a faint smell of smoke in elevated areas, according to the air district.”

Peace.

I was just thinking the other day that we haven’t heard from that cretin, Broadbent, lately. Then, oops! There he is….

Time to fire up the smoker!

I did a 14lb brisket today, started last night. Perfect weather for it

People can’t bbq in their backyards on one of the spare the air days but thousands of Bay Area restaurants and hotels can spew smoke to no avail. More pollution comes from buildings, generators and oil refineries. Wildfires and car exhaust also add to the mix. The Bay Area air quality management district is a joke. It is strictly a self serving tax subsidized entity like the pubic utilities district. The only thing they have proven is to receive our money, not to keep our air clean…..

There are two types of ‘Spare the Air’ days; Winter and not Winter. In Winter the issue is particulate (smoke particles) matter, the rest of the year the concern is ozone (created by the sun’s interaction with hydrocarbon (e.g. gasoline, diesel) by-products. Only Winter StA day warnings are mandatory. The reason there are two is due to the different atmospheric conditions, and their impact on those two classes of pollutants.

This is not winter, so this is advisory, and does not apply to ‘smoke’.

Hey all you rebels, outdoor cooking is allowed.

Smoke On!

Not sure what people’s fascination with brisket is, it’s the worst cut of meat off the animal there is.

@CWC. you just don’t know how to prepare it…. tender… moist…. tasty… and for all my kosher friends…. Yum

Traegers are for amateurs… Only reason fancy pants restaurants don’t generally do brisket is becsuse of the turn around time. Real quality takes time…. tri-tip is for beginners… but to each his own…

Traeger? Please. You do know that wood isn’t naturally pellet shaped, correct?

thank you Rollo

@CWC: Zowie! https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/brisket-prices-soar-on-growing-appetite-for-barbecue/ar-AAFfywA?li=BBnbfcL

took me a bit to go back and find this thread…. In the oven recipes are terrific too…

not to beat a dead horse; not to be confused with brisket….. Saw the article and just remembered the conversation….

Okay, I can’t hold it in anymore! Every time I see this I want some. With my favorite brisket recipe you get the best Corned Beef in at least this County. You have to salt it with spices in your fridge for five days. So good. I always start wanting it about this time of year. Why not?
