BART’s board of directors voted Thursday to expand their Homeless Outreach Team.
BART’s Homeless Outreach Team will expand its efforts to Alameda and San Mateo counties, including San Francisco International Airport, and continue in Contra Costa County.
According to BART, the Contra Costa County team engages homeless people on trains and in stations and connects them with available shelters and other services.
Now if they would only ask for their proof of payment. Bart doesn’t have the common sense for that.
So they’d lie with no ramifications? That proof of payment plan was a ridiculous failure because they tied the hands of the people trying to enforce it.
They need full size turnstyles as the only access points to BART, and guards stationed at emergency exits to *arrest* people that endanger others by abusing those doors. Anything short of that is just another invitation to waste money on a system that does not work.
Please don’t equate “homeless” with “criminal”. Most of the homeless BART riders do pay the fare.
Well of course they do…..
and they all write it off as “travel expenses” at the end of the year too.
(I found that little factoid in the same place cy found out that most of them pay the fare).
Homeless not paying the fare. They are homeless because anytime they get $5 they buy alcohol or dope. They ARE NOT wasting $5 on a BART ticket.CY ,trying to defend criminals is just as bad as they are.
We sure make it comfortable to be homeless in the Bay Area, don’t we? Libby Schaaf wonders why the count keeps growing. It’s because all tax payers are supporting the increased homeless numbers. We keep providing more and more to the homeless and less and less to school children. The homeless keep “immigrating” to the bay area. Why not?
Mark….the troubling part about your comment is to think “the homeless” are traveling here and not “already here” due to the astronomical high cost of living that has probably forced them from their homes here in the Bay Area…with families and school children among them…and exactly how are taxpayers supporting the homeless? By giving them food possibly? Have some compassion for those who have nothing….no shelter..no way to bathe..not everyone who is homeless is a drug addict or a criminal. There but for the grace of god go I..and maybe someday..you? Life has a strange way of sneaking up on you when you least expect it……
Yeah. riding in an uncomfortable seat in a hot and dangerous BART train sure is comfortable. I think I should become homeless so I can enjoy such comforts.
Heard a busload arrived from NV 2 weeks ago.
Sandra, being gullible is no way to live.
Sandra: The link below is to a documentary that Seattle news station KOMO produced. It’s about who the homeless are and what they do. It’s called Seattle is Dying. I hope you have a look.

Sandra, yes. Homeless people are being sent here and are traveling here. We give them the most. There are signs that say don;t feed the bears, but we somehow cannot take that same common sense approach to the homeless. Yes, most of the are criminals AND drug addicts. These are the facts.
We spend approx $50 a day per student. Double it and we could be saving billions preventative costs in the long run and reducing the number of HS1 Visas because finally our kids would get the education that is needed to get well paying jobs and keep them off of the streets.
And get rid of the H1B visa that the tech companies use to import marginally skilled immigrants that take all the middle class tech jobs. Those jobs would be better used supporting families and not starting a chain of migration. Been to Fremont recently? Why are you’all so worried about the southern border? It’s SFO where they are all pouring in.
The H1B visa holders at my office are all multi-degreed engineers. All speak 2-3 languages. Spread throughout our offices all over the country. Marginally skilled? Bet you couldn’t keep up with the worst of them on the your best day.
The problem with US comp sci graduates is they learned only theory from professors who never actually worked in the field. Some colleges used to have professors who worked in the field but decided to replace them with ones who had advanced degrees but no experience. And back in the 1990s colleges were still graduating students who only knew the pascal language and we needed c++ and Windows experience. We were better off using self taught people for that. When I was in India in the mid 1990s an engineer inquired so I asked about his Windows programming experience and got a blank stare.
I guess your experience is different than mine. The ones I was forced to work with were very poor at best. Did you really need to insult me like that? If you disagree just say it. We all have enough insults going around these days, no need to add to it. Thanks.
“Bet you couldn’t keep up with the worst of them on the your best day.”
What a glowing condemnation of how well K thru 12 educational systems teach students to pass government tests. Wonder how many of those foreign workers came from single parent households ? ? ?
Lol, we can all see how using those H1B visa holders worked out for Boeing. That 737 MAX was a “diversity” built airplane.
Make it comfortable? Housing prices are insane. 3200 for a 4/2 in CONCORD! 2k for a studio in SF!! We need to have mental health services and addiction counselors as well because that’s what’s wrong there is an opioid epidemic and mental illness is running rampant
I think what puzzles me is that is that yes, it’s high in SF and Concord, but not in other parts of the country- South Bend Indiana for example, new apartments are $695 for a 1BR. However, the real problem- the mental health/substance abuse crisis is absolutely true. And no one yet – politician, mental health professional or anyone else has any idea how to solve it.
uhhhmmmm
so sorry but Sandra
yeah your socialist remarks are even doubted by your own comment
quote :
mark….the troubling part about your comment is to think “the homeless” are traveling here and not “already here” due to the astronomical high cost of living that has probably forced them from their homes here in the Bay Area…with families and school children among them…and exactly how are taxpayers supporting the homeless?
first this article is explaining that it needs to further its tax funded program for bum riders …so yeah they are coming here on free transit .
second your own statement says “( that probably forced )” so your not sure yet slamming home the same democrat / bart propaganda that its not happening because of the politicians it is our fault
3rd … and exactly how are taxpayers supporting the homeless?
well again this bart statement and you do know that bart is paid with taxes right ….and the so called bums are riding free and now a tax program is spending more money to expand to the high population of bums riding and urinating on trains
and your statement of have some compassion ….really we are taxed over and over for programs for bums and that they don’t use …I would say by not firing politicians for wasting money is compassion enough for a start
lastly bums are not homeless ….people who are hit hard and lose everything and have to fend for themselves ..like say the fire victims that the politicians and pge have neglected and left to the compassion of a few who have been acquiring small rvs and such to help these people …you see we all have compassion and can relate to victims and reach high goals …even higher that a politicians as they had no answers and a few people with common sense and will to strive and push and fill the void as americans …while the Antifa politicians did nothing
bums in my opinion and visual and verbal instances don’t want anything to do with civility or laws or even being a part of America as a whole …if they were able to be given 20,000 acres somewhere to live on their own they would still come back for the freeway hand outs and corner panhandling and the strongarm bart tactics of spiting and urinating where you sit unless you give what ….money …so they can buy booze and drugs not food
Amen!
Same old transients down at Montgomery at 11:45 on smoking crack hybrid elevator, spitting everywhere as well as relieving themselves. Then, they started fighting. On a positive note, I have confidence in the new General Manager who was promoted to his position. He is going to do a full review on where all the money is going. Check out KTVU need. Why wasn’t he promoted in the first place? Grace Crunican was always a horrid choice for the job. Check out the news report and see how you feel. I say, a breath of fresh air finally! BART is still lies though. I haven’t seen any improvement on the trains. Last Friday night, passenger just escorted Mr, scabby psycho, his stinky shoes he had taken off that killed everyone because his feet smelled so bad. Passenger made him pickings heroin. Scabby was falling into the two quads right outside TO’s door. TO did nothing. Thank you passenger for saving my nose and night after a hard day at work. You never see BPD on the trains ever. They suck.
I agree. I think the new Manager may have the skills and desire to turn things around. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Oakland’s homeless population jumped 47 percent in 2 years in a booming economy. Perhaps it’s time to cut the handouts. I worked my way to retirement and firmly believe in natural law (biological and financial) – those who can, survive; those who can’t, don’t.
Especially when some camper owners are renting those campers to homeless and others who just use them for cheap rent.
How about this. 1. We put the mentally ill back in mental hospitals where they are safe and taken care of. 2. For the ones that aren’t part of #1, tell them to get a job or move on. If you can’t afford to live here, then don’t. I’m sick to death of seeing them move in wherever they want leaving heaps of garbage they create because they can. Stop enabling these people. Until people stop tolerating this, it will not end.
