The state Legislature has passed a bill by Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, that will help college students get access to nutritional food through Cal Fresh.
Senate Bill 173 removes barriers to student subsidies under the Cal Fresh program in part by streamlining the application process. An estimated 50,000 California college students could qualify for Cal Fresh under the legislation.
“My bill will ensure students of modest means don’t go hungry by making it easier for them to receive public assistance,” Dodd said.
“Food insecurity is a serious problem on California college campuses today and this is an important step to addressing it,” Dodd said.
A recent Government Accountability Office report determined one-third of all college students are struggling to afford food and basic nutrition.
Dodd’s bill now goes to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk for signing.
They had something like that when I was younger. It was called a job but let’s make ourselves more dependent on the State instead.
The democrats want to start the addiction to socialism early. Faith in big government instead of faith in God to take care of you.
Incentives for hard work, entrepreneurship, capitalism, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and private property rights are all anathema to the New Democrat Party. Old democrats like Biden need to go on apology tours before they are kicked to the curb.
If tuition was not so high we wouldn’t have this problem.
It sure is a whole lot higher than it used to be.
why was this a priority over the krapola they serve the kids in public K-12 schools??????????
yes, food is served to the kids…. it is Crap! That’s the issue that should be addressed.
@Rick: In some districts, every students gets a free breakfast and lunch, period, since it is paid for under a grant.
From cradle to grave, it’s the Democratic party way.
What happens when they graduate? Another program to feed recent grads?
At some point, people have to learn to feed themselves or go hungry.
How is food insecurity defined? How was the question asked?
20% supposedly don’t know where their next meal is coming from? Pretty fuzzy definition.
more tax money going to steer college students votes
vote dem we fed you …well we made up a bill …so your hard working parents could pay for it with their tax money
so anyways vote for dems we fed you
What a bunch of babies! I learned how to make a meal out of Top Ramen and whatever leftover veggies I had. Stop making people relay on Gov. handouts!!!
No one is forcing anyone to rely on government assistance. Besides, many middle class people rely on welfare too; it ‘s called the mortgage interest tax deduction on houses.
It’s so hard to believe that there is a belief that all people are equal in life and situation. Have you never know a family member or friend who had to struggle because of circumstances beyond their control (dead parents, abusive families, illness)?Surviving is nothing like trying to survive in 1975…1955…etc. We can’t sell apples on the sidewalk to support our family. It is true that we don’t serve k-12 students enough. Thankful that my kids are grown and we caught the tail end of busing. What is a family supposed to do when they have to clock in at work yet they have no way for their elementary age child to get to school or home?. Don’t even suggest carpool because it’s the same people who are against helping those with food insecurity… We are are a messed up society of selfish and uncaring people.
If you can’t afford the kids, don’t have them.
Hey reality… what about those people who could afford them and then their breadwinner dies of natural causes/accident/illness and the money disappears? What do you suggest then, Kill the kids? It’s such a stupid statement.
@AMAZED That’s what life insurance is for,
Top Ramen vouchers?
🤣
Information: A package of Top Ramen holds 380 calories.
A package of Top Ramen is actually a serving for 2. One serving is 190 calories.
Big Bang Theory (tv show) had a funny scene on Top Ramen. Penny (who isn’t very domestic) and Leonard (her geeky boyfriend) are enjoying a serving of Top Ramen. Leonard remarks how it is the best Top Ramen she’s ever made. Penny says, “I discovered the secret of Top Ramen. The flavor packet!”
For better ramen just use vermicelli noodles. For flavoring some of the bottled stir fry sauces work or a seasoning sauce. Of course the packaged ramen noodles are freeze dried and cook up in 3 minutes but vermicelli noodles are better quality but take longer. There was an authentic ramen noodle shop in the Brenden complex in Concord about 15 years ago.
If you substituted vermicelli for ramen noodles, it wouldn’t be ramen. It’d be Italiamen … … … … or something.
Come one now! Maybe if students learned how to budget and not spend on useless material things they could afford to eat a proper meal.
You should really start a company that sells that awesome advice to folks paying $20k + a year for college while making likely $10-$15 an hour…
Isn’t this the age of entitlement? Work???? You MUST be kidding
I am confused by your statement since normally you post very liberal things.
Not everyone is tribal.
This comment thread is filled with massive generalizations and knee-jerkers.
“I suffered, therefore everyone else should, too”
It’s not suffering, it’s called being self reliant!
No… “I worked HARD for what I have, maybe YOU should too!”
Freshman 15
Food insecurity
Which is it?
It depends if your school is a residential college with a meal plan included or a commuter school, like DVC.
Give a man a fish he eats for a day
Teach A man to fish he eats for a lifetime.
Most college students need to work a part-time job if you do not have enough money for food you should probably get a job and go to school part time. It might take longer to get the degree But you would’ve done it as an independent adult
Let’s remember college aged people are adults.
It is harder to focus completely on academics when working. In law school, they recommend to their students not to work.
“It is harder to focus completely on academics when working.”
So a college education should be easy?
@Rollo Tomasi: Seriously?? The time you don’t have to put in to work can be put towards academics instead, and you will get more of your money’s worth and have more to show for your education, which will pay off more than working those extra hours during school.
Working as an unskilled laborer is important. It developes social skills. Mundane tasks will help prepare you for future relationships. Staying busy and food prep is relaxing. Geeze!
Some of our most creative thoughts arise when the brain is at rest.
We are are a messed up society of selfish and uncaring people.
hmm so the constitution and veterans and volunteers are not worthy
look this hey lets coddle every person and cloth them and give them money
IS NOT WORKING OBVIOUSLY
yet it is shoved down our throats like a moma bird who steals food from the other birds who are working to get food on their own table
this country was built so people who wanted to better themselves by working hard and striving for more could get it ….
yet now over the past 40 years of dem rule in this state welfare and system sucking is the new norm ….voters love it and politicians cant promote it fast enough
is this what you really want a total reliability on a system to support you to become lemmings with no individuality and self worth ….just a socialist pawn used like a dog in the ring for political sport and political gains as they rule over you and your system lives
there are countries like that all ready and they are not America or free …
should you choose to give up the freedom that millions died for I hope your souls can cash that bet you have made ……
It’s the generation of eternal babyhood. Who will be there to wipe their rear ends for them, for their entire lives?
these so called impoverished college kids ..I am sure have cellphones …and laptops …
why is it a single mom can work 2 jobs and succeed and advance and get where she wants to be and yet ….the politicians need to wipe the noses of adults and force us to pay for it from our hard earned money
hey maybe if you backed off with the whip on the hard working tax payer and actually fixed the roads and rid the bums ….we would be more than happy to maybe help with your baby dreams …
but slapping us with tax hikes and fees and gas tax and soda tax and life tax and then beating us down because we have somthign to say about feeding illegals and bums and now college kids and supporting dem agendas with tax money funneled through program after program and a program for that program and a program to monitor that program and a program to help that program …..we might be inclined to help
or why not throw a tax break for contributions to said programs instead of making a fist full of dollars grab from the whole bucket for every program
Laptops and cell phones are necessary for success in academics. Everything is computer based nowadays.
Back in college my weekly food budget was $25. Beyond that there was always the option of selling bodily fluids.
In California, you are not allowed to sell plasma. Such sites also used to turn away transpeople.
Unless you mean selling eggs or sperm. But the market for sperm is bad.
Not supporting American students in college/trade school pursuits leads to even a greater population of unskilled people and a greater need for immigration of skilled workers.
If we won’t support our students, them I’m all for immigration to fill those roles. Our society deserves what it creates.
The bean counters aren’t looking for “skilled” foreign workers just cheap ones. Students should also be aware if they have any real interest in a field other than it pays well. It’s not going to pay well (or anything for that matter) if they aren’t any good at it. Some countries put their students into fields that they have a knack for. The US has been on too much of a “broad education” kick for many years.
“Let them eat tofu!”
What’s next, pay them to attend school? Provide new iPhones each year? Pedicures?
How about those of us who work full time and cant afford food but dont have any kids so there’s no help available. Try doing something about that.
OMG! When I was in college, I lived on coffee and I was lucky if I even had money for that.
Speaking of food prep, easy peasy oatmeal is nutritious, AND knowing how to plate a carrot is beneficial. As for meat, well that might take some skilz. Buttering bread? I dunno. That might require a semester in chef 101.
Feeding these dopes might deprive them of survival training.
