Scheduled Work To Delay BART Trains On Sunday

BART will run trains on a single track on Sunday as the transit agency makes major upgrades to its power system.

The single-tracking will take place between 8 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Riders should expect delays of between 15 and 20 minutes on the Concord to SFO-Millbrae line.

The service disruptions are to allow crews to replace power cables and pipes, according to BART.

Sorta off topic but I think it would be worth it for BART to up it’s prices by 15 or so percent of that meant a step up in security and somehow able to make the trains less crammed in during commute.

True.

What a lot of folks don’t understand is that the Measure RR bond money can’t be used to purchase rolling stock or maintenance vehicles, nor can it be used to pay wages and create new positions. Money for those things needs to come from revenue.

The BART fleet is surprisingly efficient – BART utilizes the highest percentage of rolling stock of any transit district in the nation. Something like 85% of BARTs train carriages are in service at any given time. This is despite them having the oldest average train carriage age of any transit system in the U.S.

At a cost of around $4 million PER CAR, the new carriages aren’t cheap. But they are a worthy investment. If BART gets the use out of the new cars to the same extent they have been using the old ones, it’s money well spent.

Unfortunately the percentage of NEW cars in use is only 57%. They say that they have 84 cars on property but only 48 cars in service. One has to think that the move to have the cars assembled in Pittsburg has something to do with the poor reliability of the new cars delivered to date. Just speculation – but they are so far behind the original schedule – one has only time to speculate.

Testing of new cars is extensive and they’re have been hiccups. Shame, really. But they’ll get rolling eventually.
