Sunnyvale Market & Deli, located at 1512 Sunnyvale Ave. in Walnut Creek, was shut down this week after inspectors from the Contra Costa County Department of Environmental Health say they found the following:
- 5 lbs of whole wheat and 10 lbs of white wheat flours stored in open bags on floor next to buildup of debris
including cockroach egg casing. - 3 live and 40+ dead cockroaches at multiple life stages observed on floor in deli left of cook line. 1 egg casing
observed on floor next dough mixer and meat department. - 1 live adult cockroach on cash register counter.
The health department says an employee of the market provided a pest control report dated May 28, 2019 that indicated facility was treated for cockroaches before the inspection.
The restaurant has since been reinspected and reopened.

Wow nope never heard of it and never will go or send any friends
Don’t know why anyone would
So when you see dead roaches and casings in your restaurant, you don’t bother to clean them up ? What else aren’t they cleaning ? Gross.
I thought the exact same thing. I worked in a lot of restaurants for a long time. It sounds like they rarely swept thoroughly.
BOIL THEM! 😉
@Pat
How do they taste boiled?
I heard they’re crunchy when deep fried.
Its just extra protein for free lol. seriously though if you think seeing a few cockroaches is disgusting NEVER go outside United States!!!
How about that recently opened rat restaurant in SF?
Those rats are the pet variety and likely thoroughly checked by the vet and vaccinated. At least, one would expect them to be well cared for as pets.
When I lived in that part of town I patronized that deli all the time, almost daily, in fact, to have one of their sandwiches. It looked okay to me. Of course, now I am shocked that it was below county health standards. Boo hoo!
@AJ Buttacavoli… If you haven’t had a compulsion to scurry to a dark corner when someone turns on the lights you should be OK.
Another place I’ve never eaten.
This is why I go to Olive Garden.
Don’t think Olive Garden is any better. Alameda County Environmental Health can barely inspect restaurants once a year. They’re always behind in their inspections. You go go to their website, check out all inspections in the county and documented violations. You’d be surprised at what you find!
