China Wall Buffet, located at 1673 Willow Pass Rd. in Concord’s Park & Shop shopping center, has been shut down by the Contra Costa County Environmental Health Department for the second time in three months.
The restaurant was inspected and closed on Tuesday after the department discovered a vermin infestation.
Inspectors say they observed the following:
- Over 50 insects live and dead were observed in 3-lbs. of Western Chicken breading crumbs stored in tub at cook line, in a bag inside a Sysco box in dry storage room and in 5-lbs. of breading mix used for fish stored in a plastic tub in the dry storage room.
- 20 live German cockroaches of various life stages observed above food preparation sink in kitchen between
wall and wall shelf. - 1 dead cockroach observed in can used to store metal probe thermometers above the prep refrigerator along the
cook line.
Inspectors visited the restaurant after a customer made a complaint to the health department. The complaint alleged a dead cockroach was found on shrimp and a dead bug was found on oysters.

Maaaaannn – now I REALLY want Chinese food for dinner. :/
Ate there once a long time ago. Horrible food was enough to keep me from coming back now I’m glad I never did.
Has anyone seen “Rats” on Netflix? It’s shocking.
Yap saw it. Other countries sure don’t care about cleanliness like they should.
Gross, I actually felt nauseous when I read about the person finding a roach (and not the good kind) on their shrimp.
Right? I threw up in my mouth a little.
I’m pretty sure this place has been closed a few times for health violations. They are more resilient than the cockroaches they serve in their buffet!
Shut this place down. Disgusting. Obviously the employees don’t care about cleanliness. This place has had too many chances.
No more eating at ANY restaurant for me!
I keep wondering about the owners of this and other restaurants with similar violations.
How could a responsible owner let this business procedures fail?
I can only guess that the owners may not be that responsible.
I was looking at the CoCoCounty facility closure list, and it looks like most facilities that have been shut down usually reopen two days later. I am wondering if there is a limit to how many times a facility can be shut down. Does Environmental Health even have the authority to permanently shut down a restaurant for health code violations? I suspect that they don’t.
I think it has become clear, that they can not control the infestation from recurring! How is closing down a restaurant for “2” days going to rid itself of nasty bugs? This place has been shut down to many times for us the consumer to ever feel safe, or comfortable to want to eat there!
Since the Health Department does not seem to have the authority to permanently close a facility, for repeated violations, publicizing these closures becomes even more important. Diners should be able to make an informed decision when choosing which restaurants are deserving of their business.
How many “again” do you get before they shut you down for good?
I really appreciate that Claycord post the ‘Dirty Dining’ for everyone.
If we are going to a new/different dining place we’ll check for inspection reports first,…it’s no guarantee, but rather avoid the worst places.
For the most part, we don’t eat out much and have not had meals at any of the diners listed on Dirty Dining. I’ll be sad if one of the few we visit comes up on the list.

The free Food Inspector App. is a must these days. (Available for apple & android). I don’t eat anywhere without checking it first. Which means, I rarely eat out!
I usually have little regard for government agencies but I applaud the recent uptick and visibility of inspections of eateries by the Contra Costa County Environmental Health Department. I now look for the green inspection placard when entering a restaurant and feel a bit more assured when I see a “Passed” placard posted. I also thank the Mayor for posting these violations and/or closures.
When it first opened my wife and I ate there a few times but after awhile the quality of food went down and trays were not filled often enough. So if you liked a certain food it may have a empty tray which sort of wrecked you plan om what you wanted to eat. We stopped going there years ago.
Went there once since they opened. Horrible food.
We enjoyed Chan’s and I dont remember it ever being dirty.
Honestly, with enough soy sauce, you don’t even taste the cockroaches carcasses. Crunchy sure but it doesn’t seem to bother me like it used to.
Cockroaches live in the sewers and can enter through floor drains in which the traps are not filled with water. Since furniture and equipment can be moved around, sometimes a drain gets hidden and nobody knows it’s there. The trap dries out and nobody knows where the bugs are coming from.
I’ve never been in the place and I avoid “buffets” as a general rule anyway. Back east it’s a given that some cultures have a much higher tolerance for, let’s just say cross-species contamination. Not that I cotton to such talk. 😉
Grandmas not going to like this news
German cockroaches in a Chinese place? What the hell. We clearly need a bad German place so they can infest the sauerkraut & dumpfnudel like good Germans roaches.
Maybe it’s time to shut their doors for good!
We evaluated the County Environmental Health Dept some years ago when I was on the Civil Grand Jury. Generally did decent work.
Usually owner brings in pest control service which cleans and sanitizes everything, and then a re-inspection. Two days were sufficient
Most food warehouses have roaches and they lay eggs. Every restaurant grocery delivery brings in new pests. Most restaurants are not careful enough to remain pest free. Some buildings have rats in areas that have access to the stores.
cross another place off my list…
My mom ate here over 10 years ago when she worked across the street and there was a live roach on her cup. When the owner was told there was a bug on her saucer she said I’m sorry we just sprayed. Gross!
Yeck! Never eating there!
Surprisingly, people were still lining up upon the second closure. They were scheduled to open that afternoon, according to a sign on the door. That was taken down quickly. They obviously only care about that money. So I’ll not be caring about them. You can get your dose of roach flavored food if you want. I’m sticking to my bug free diet!!
The German cockroaches are here in time for Octoberfest.
