California Urges Public Sector Workers To Apply For Student Debt Forgiveness Before Deadline

In partnership with California Attorney General Rob Bonta, the Campaign for California Borrowers’ Rights launched a “California Student Debt Challenge,” a statewide informational campaign on student loan forgiveness.

Some one million Californians in the public service sphere are eligible for loan forgiveness, but only 10,000 have received it since 2007, according to state data. Local leaders want to ensure as many residents as possible receive the relief they’re entitled to.

Teachers, firefighters, non-profit employees, government workers and all who work in public service are entitled to loan forgiveness after 10 years of work, thanks to the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. But it’s a widely unknown program, despite its potential to deliver tens of thousands of dollars of relief for those paying off debts.

For a limited time, the federal government is allowing eligible workers to recuperate funds from past periods of repayment that they missed, which for some, could significantly reduce or completely clear their loans. But borrowers must apply before Oct. 31 to receive these past credits.

“October 31 is the key day to get those past credits. It’s a little less, I get it, than three months to put yourself on the path to low or no student debt,” California Governor Gavin Newsom said. “California, we’re making big changes across the board, not just to promote this program, but to make college more affordable.”

Employers and employees can learn more about the debt forgiveness program at studentaid.gov.

gee, thanks. alleviate their responsibility. I wonder if I took out a $50K loan so I could follow boot-edge-edge’s flippant remark about buying an EV, will the government take taxpayer earnings to give that money to me, to “forgive” me of that debt? How many hours did each of us have to work to cover the cost of “forgiving” these loans?

Math Guy August 9, 2022 - 4:19 PM - 4:19 PM

20,800 hours over 10 years.

Math guy August 9, 2022 - 4:20 PM - 4:20 PM

(52 weeks, 40 hours a week, 10 years)

...---... August 9, 2022 - 2:30 PM - 2:30 PM

These people took out the loans now force them to pay them off.
When I took out loans I knew I was on the hook for payback for the full amount.
I payed off my loans without any help.
If you can’t pay off you loan you loose the degree that you didn’t pay for.

Wally August 9, 2022 - 10:28 PM - 10:28 PM

I love the hypocrisy.

If that’s the case, why shouldn’t the government forgive people who rack up credit card debt and can’t pay off the compounding interest charges? Or what about those who start a small business and can’t pay back business loans? What about those of who gladly accepted a Paycheck Protection loan, used it as free money and never paid back the debt?

Oh, wait… they already do.

Bankruptcy laws allow people to wipe out their unsecured debt, but Congress instead turned the rules governing student loan debt into their federal slush fund.

Where’s your outrage about that?

Lamorinda Larry August 10, 2022 - 10:20 PM - 10:20 PM

@Wally – I was fired up to blast your comment until I got to your penultimate paragraph. The general bar against discharging student loans in bankruptcy is a key distinction.

Granted, California state and local employees earn generous wages, so allowing them to parade in do-gooder forgiveness schemes confounds economic logic.

The Mamba August 9, 2022 - 3:12 PM - 3:12 PM

You love to see a scrappy underdog like the CA unions getting more benefits that the rest of the tax paying public isn’t entitled to. Awesome.

Janon August 9, 2022 - 3:13 PM - 3:13 PM

This is self favoritism, public sector favoring public sector. Guess what? Private sector also service the public aka humans too. So messed up.

this_that August 9, 2022 - 3:14 PM - 3:14 PM

I was obviously a sucker for working several jobs, during college, to pay my tuition.

Parent August 9, 2022 - 3:16 PM - 3:16 PM

Like others have said and will say …

I took out the loan, I paid it back.

What are we teaching the next generation? A participation trophy is good enough. No one is left behind, so everyone passes with our dumber down education system. It is okay to be in debt, cause the taxpayers will pay it off for you.

No wonder lie next generation is failing – no responsibility. No accountability. No consequences for their actions.

An it’s purely a coincidence this happens right before an election.

Can you say Vote Buying ? ? ?

working for 10 years and still carrying student debt, that sucks. This program doesn’t seem very equitable, what about the person working in the fast food industry, no loan forgiveness for them?

CJRN August 9, 2022 - 5:02 PM - 5:02 PM

I paid my student loan. I also worked two jobs so that I could pay back the loan. One job was in the private sector, one job for a government agency.
I also determined that going back to school for a masters was too expensive and I didn’t want the debt. It doesn’t pay to be responsible

HappyPappy August 9, 2022 - 5:30 PM - 5:30 PM

This is the perfect way to buy the non-productive whiner class votes and make hard working conservatives pay. It’s punishing the opposition and rewarding the leftist bottom feeders.
Remember this every time you vote.

WC August 9, 2022 - 5:39 PM - 5:39 PM

Gavin is vote buying again! With YOUR money.

JG27AD August 9, 2022 - 6:14 PM - 6:14 PM

No debt is forgiven. It is only transferred to others. In this case the taxpayer.

Heck, take ETEC program over the hill in Pittsburg at LMC.
If you hit the cycle it takes 4 semesters with employers trying to hire in last semester.

Industrial Electricians are in DEMAND and pay is a living wage, with very little debt. An at those wages any debt gets paid off fast.

Don’t waste time on 4 years of college !

O boy !
Where do I sign up.
I had to dig in to my retirement 30 year ago and now that I have retired I sure could use an extra 50k to make ends meet.
Thanks

First I chose a field of study that was marketable. I went to Junior College then chose a College that I could afford to complete my studies. I worked my butt off during the summer to pay for the next year. When I took my last final I walked away with any engineering degree and debt free. I bet a good percentage of those that have outstanding loan balances have kids, own a nice home and car but they just can’t find the money to pay off their loans. I think there wages should be attached. A dead beat is a dead beat!

TN guy August 9, 2022 - 8:46 PM - 8:46 PM

Agreed. That sounds like my story also. If you went to school for gender studies at Stanford —and took loans out for it —like a fool —then that is 100% on you.

I recall all the credits given for worthless courses —meanwhile a physics lab was worth 1 credit. Ridiculous.

Cautiously Informed August 9, 2022 - 9:11 PM - 9:11 PM

It’s the democrat government:
Teaching people to be irresponsible freeloaders.
Buying votes.
Working to create a system where a large portion of the citizenry is dependent on them.
And for themselves grabbing more money, control, money, power and money.
More and more, to pay for it all, bleeding the tax paying, responsible and independent citizens of their hard earned dollars.

The Fearless Spectator August 9, 2022 - 9:26 PM - 9:26 PM

Newsom’s California aims to breed people dependent on Government and not themselves. It sure makes suckers out of the responsible students.
But then again, that’s really the objective.
Dumb down the public. Get smart with us and we’ll screw you over, sayeth the the overlord.

Chris August 9, 2022 - 11:05 PM - 11:05 PM

My husband served four years in the military to help him pay for college. I lived at home for two years while attending a community College to help with expenses and working every weekend and my Summers to knock out my electives. I went onto a State University and took out two loans paying them both back in 6 years after graduating from college. Our two daughters both attended community College and then went onto to State Universities. My husband and I both saved for 20+ years for our daughters’ College fund. They will not owe anything upon graduation. I feel like this equity business has been twisted. Lesson: live large and be irresponsible as the Democrats will always bail you out.

Pepe August 10, 2022 - 8:00 AM - 8:00 AM

Obviously, this is wrong. The people that work hard in the private sector have to pay their student loans off themselves but if you get an easy taxpayer funded job the taxpayers will also pay off your loan. Yea that sounds fair. This is what the people in California voted for.

Two Wheeler August 10, 2022 - 8:03 AM - 8:03 AM

I worked multiple jobs while juggling courses at DVC parttime. It took a lot longer to get my degree but I paid for it on my own. I had to save up to go on to a 4-year college. Gavin in 100% buying votes. And there is nothing wrong with going to community college, a trade school, or the military after high school.

The Fearless Spectator August 10, 2022 - 9:43 AM - 9:43 AM

Very well said. My experience at DVC was terrific especially night classes. I made friends with kids my age who were taking night classes because they worked during the day. I also made friends with adults taking night classes to improve their careers.
That’s my example of diversity: People aged 18-60 or more, different races and genders, all there with the goal of self improvement.
These subsidies are the equivalent of a participation trophy, they cheapen the experience.

HappyPappy August 10, 2022 - 10:40 AM - 10:40 AM

How about all you nice Socialists get together at your favorite meet-up place, gather all your wealth together, and divide it equally among yourselves.
You would show your support for this “equity” thing you’re all seeking.
All student debt would soon vanish, everybody could then rejoice and live happily ever after.
You could then stand tall knowing the debt YOU agreed to pay will NOT be shifted to those of us who didn’t agree to cover you miserable failed @ZZ.
You’re welcome, no need to thank me.

Cautiously Informed August 10, 2022 - 10:55 AM - 10:55 AM

The government teaching college students that they don’t have to work for things they need or want.

Burnbabyburn August 10, 2022 - 8:20 PM - 8:20 PM

Yes. Screw the private sector. Thanks california
