Gov. Gavin Newsom and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced a new partnership Friday to combat climate change and reduce pollution.
The two executives met at the New Zealand Garden in Golden Gate Park’s Botanical Garden to sign a memorandum of cooperation, outlining the state and country’s goals of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050 and expanding the use of zero-emission transportation methods.
“No country is immune from the impacts of climate changes, so it’s just common sense to collaborate with likeminded partners to meet our mutual goals,” Ardern said in a statement.
“This agreement means we’ll work together to share expertise and experience and collaborate on projects that help meet each other’s targets,” she said.
Newsom has previously signed similar memorandums with leaders in Japan and China in an effort to strengthen their relations with the state and accelerate initiatives to reduce carbon emissions.
In 2020, he issued an executive order that will require vehicle manufacturers to fully phase out the sale of new gas-powered passenger vehicles by 2035.
“Later is too late to address climate change, and California is taking aggressive steps to bolster the clean economy while reducing pollution in our communities – but we can’t do it alone,” Newsom said. “This partnership with New Zealand, another global climate leader, will strengthen ties between our two governments to deploy critical solutions that are essential to addressing this existential crisis.”

Reading this has motivated me to prepare a memorandum of cooperation with God. I’ve requested if there is a choice to die in 2050 or when California becomes carbon neutral, please arrange for the latter. As there is no way in heaven or hell California will be carbon neutral by 2050. That’s the chimpanzee part of your brain talkin’ to ya Gav.

Much ‘thanks’ for your forward thinking mandates to eliminate all gas powered automobiles by 2035. Such a ‘visionary’ to have aggressive goals to be carbon neutral by 2050, as much of the CA populace will appreciate fully with the current fuel prices. The people of CA must endure financial sacrifice and procure an electric vehicle, perhaps recommend no less than a Tesla Model S, with a starting price of $100K, which likely all CA citizens can easily afford.
I read you have tested positive for COVID, despite the shots and boosters. The science(tm) has recommended a Remdesivir regime, followed by a ventilator, the desired protocol. Climate change started a 100 yrs ago or more… it’s part of earths cycle… the wildfires contribute more pollution than today’s cars… and some new scientific studies are saying the building and charging of today’s electric vehicles contribute as much or more to pollution than clean gasoline cars of today
